The city's name is the same as a local Ukrainian name for Artemisia vulgaris (mugwort or common wormwood, which is чорнобиль or "chornobyl"). An alternative etymology holds that it is a combination of the words chorniy (чорний, black) and byllia (билля, grass blades or stalks), hence it would literally mean black grass or black stalks.

都市の名称は、アルテミシア・ヴァルガリス(オオヨモギ)の地元ウクライナ名称（ニガヨモギあるいはчорнобильすなわちチェルノブイリ）と同じである。別の語源は、chorniy (чорний, 黒)とbyllia (билля, 葉あるいは茎）の組み合わせなので、文字通りの意味は、黒い草あるいは黒い茎である。

Listen, he said, ''this is incredible: 'And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; and the name of the star is called wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.' ''

In a dictionary, he showed the Ukrainian word for wormwood, a bitter wild herb used as a tonic in rural Russia: chernobyl.

The writer, an atheist, was hardly alone in pointing out the apocalyptic reference to the star called chernobyl. With the uncanny speed common to rumor in the Soviet Union, the discovery had spread across the Soviet land, contributing to the swelling body of lore that has shaped the public consciousness of the disaster at the Chernobyl atomic power plant in the Ukraine.

その後も、あまり言及がなく、翌年(1987年)に、BBCが日本の放送局が制作したチェルノブイリ番組を放映した際の、紹介記事くらい,,,

Chernobyl is apparently the Russian word for Wormwood, The programme draws attention to a chilling quote from the Book of Revelation: "And the tird angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and fountains of the third part of the waters became Wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were mad ebitter."

The Japanese documentary team travelled all over Europe, from Italy to Scandinavia, to examine the effects of Chernoyl.

In the 1993 film Naked starring David Thewlis, the eccentric protagonist Johnny quotes the Book of Revelation and remarks that the Russian translation of Chernobyl is 'wormwood.' This quote is also used as a sample in the 1997 album Orblivion.
