M65アトミックキャノン


M65アトミックキャノンは、重量83.3t (砲と台車), 全長26m, 幅4.9m, 高さ3.7m, 乗員5〜7名, 射程30km, 移動速度は最速時速56km, 15分で発射可能, 15分で移動可能という、米軍の核砲弾発射可能な砲である。

1953年のOperation Upshot-Knotholeの10発目Grable実験(15kt)が、このM65の発射実験である。その雄姿は、リストアされた動画Trinity and Beyondで、美しく再現されている。


このM65について、米軍が強調したかったことは、発射の雄姿ではなく、移動の方だった。解説動画では、本体の前後に移動用車両を連結して、道路を走り、カーブを曲がる姿が地味に紹介されている。そして、地面の準備などすることなく、発射体制に入れることを解説している。

The 280 millimeter guns were taken off the railroad flat cars, and started on the 65 mile journey to the Atomic Energy Commission's Nevada proving ground, where they will provide the proof of atomic might

On their way through Las Vegas, the big guns experienced no trouble whatsoever in negotiating the city street.

On the short path to turns, however, where they really proved their method.

Handled exactly like the biggest, hook and ladder trucks of any fire department, but some thirty feet longer and many tons heavier.

In 1944 when the original design specifications were drawn up, the gun was thought to be 240 mm weapon.

Even on secondary roads or rough terrain, the guns retain relatively high mobility, in spite of the fact, their speeds onward to approximately 10 miles per hour.
