Some biochemical systems are irreducibly complex, meaning that the removal of any one part of the system destroys the system's function. Irreducible complexity rules out the possibility of a system having evolved, so it must be designed.

Response:
  1. 還元不可能な複雑さは進化可能である。システムから部品を1個取り除くとシステムは機能を失うことだと定義されており、これは機能を変えずに部品を1個追加することで進化できないシステムであることを示しているにすぎない。それでも、幾つかの進化メカニズムが残る:
      1. 部品の欠失
      2. 複数部品の追加。たとえば、システム全体の重複コピー(Pennisi 2001)
      3. 機能の変化
      4. ある部品に対する第2の機能の追加(Aharoni et al. 2004)
      5. 漸進的な部品の変化
    1. これらのメカニズムは遺伝的突然変異で観察されてきた。特に、欠失と遺伝子重複はとても一般的である(Dujon et al. 2004; Hooper and Berg 2003; Lynch and Conery 2000)。さらに、これらのメカニズムは還元不可能な複雑を作ることができるだけでなく、むしろ作ることが予測される。事実、ノーベル賞受賞遺伝学者Hermann Mullerは、このことをほぼ一世紀前に予測していた(Muller 1918, 463-464)。Mullerはこれを"interlocking complexity"と呼んだ(Muller 1939)。

  3. 還元不可能な複雑さはちゃんと定義されていない。部品という用語で定義されているが、"部品"が何なのか明らかでない。原子は生化学的に分解不可能なレベルの構造であり、生化学者が分析対象とする最小単位なので、論理的には部品は個々の原子である。しかし、Beheは分子の集合体を個々の部品と考えており、彼がそう決定した理由は示されていない。
  4. 還元不可能に複雑だと考えられたシステムが実際にはそうではないかもしれない。たとえば:
    1. Beheが還元不可能な複雑さの例として使うネズミ捕りは、アームを曲げてラッチを取り去ることで単純化できる。
    2. 細菌の鞭毛は多くの部品を失っても、単純化された鞭毛あるいは分泌システムとして機能するので、還元不可能に複雑ではない。真核生物の鞭毛(繊毛あるいは波動毛と呼ばれる)のタンパク質の多くは不可欠ではないと知られている。というのは、これらのタンパク質を欠いた、泳ぐ機能を持つ鞭毛が存在していることが知られているからだ。
    3. Beheのタンパク質輸送の例は複雑であるにもかかわらず、輸送が必要ではない他のタンパク質が存在する (see Ussery 1999 for references)。
    4. Beheが還元不可能に複雑なシステムに分類した免疫システムの例は還元不可能に複雑ではない。というのは、破壊対象の侵入細胞をマークする抗体は、それらの細胞の機能を邪魔して、補体系のデストロイヤー分子なしにシステムを(うまくはないが)機能させるからだ。
