Type Directors Club : Views : Type Dictionary
A term generally applied to a small projection found at the lower end of a vertical stroke as a result of a calligraphic gesture. In grotesque typefaces, such as Akzidenz Grotesque (1898) or News Gothic (1908), the uppercase letter G is characterized by a projection or spur on the lower curve, which gives visual stability to the letterform. A spur was also employed by Philippe Grandjean in the middle left of the vertical strokes of lowercase letters l and old ſ to create a distinctive feature on the Roman du Roi Louis XIV typeface, cut for the Imprimerie Royale in 1700. This feature was later copied by other European typographers.
