On April 26, 1986, an accident occurred at Unit 4 of the nuclear power station at Chernobyl, Ukraine, in the former USSR. The accident, caused by a sudden surge of power, destroyed the reactor and released massive amounts of radioactive material into the environment. To stop the fire and prevent a criticality accident as well as any further substantial release of fission products, boron and sand were poured on the reactor from the air. In addition, the damaged unit was entombed in a temporary concrete "sarcophagus," to limit further release of radioactive material.

1986年4月26日、当時ソビエト連邦の一部であった、ウクライナのチェルノブイリ原子力発電所の4号炉で事故が発生した。その爆発は突然の電圧変化によって引き起こされ、原子炉を破壊し大量の放射性物質を周囲に放出した。火の手を防ぎ、さらなる大量の核分裂生成物の放出はもちろん、臨界事故を防ぐために上空からホウ素と砂が原子炉に投下された。さらに、これ以上の放射性物質の放出に歯止めをかけるため、爆発を起こした原子炉は“石棺”で一時的に封じ込められた。

Control measures to reduce radioactive contamination at and near the plant site included cutting down and burying a pine forest of approximately 1 square mile. The three other units of the four-unit Chernobyl nuclear power station were subsequently restarted. The Soviet nuclear power authorities presented an initial report on the accident at an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) meeting in Vienna, Austria, in August 1986. After the accident, access to the area in a 30-kilometer (18-mile) radius around the plant was closed, except for persons requiring official access to the plant and to the immediate area for evaluating and dealing with the consequences of the accident and operation of the undamaged units.

The "unexpectedly high" mutation rate, discovered by using DNA fingerprinting techniques, means that a significant proportion of the world's population doing jobs where even low-level radiation is present are exposing their unborn children to increased risk, the researchers say. This will be of serious concern to the nuclear industry, which has repeatedly rejected claims that exposure to radiation among its workers can affect children yet to be conceived. The theory was put forward by a team at Southampton University as the reason for the leukemia cluster at Sellafield, but later rejected.

The new findings show that the radiation from the stricken Ukrainian reactor affected the sperm of fathers, leading to mutation in the DNA of the children. None of them showed physical deformities, because the DNA changes were slight, but the long-term effects are not known. Three teams of scientists, from the Institute of Evolution and the Kupat Holim National Cancer Control Center, both in Haifa, Israel, and the Research Center for Radiation Medicine in Ukraine tested children of parents involved in the Chernobyl accident.

Families in which one child was conceived before the accident and one later were tested, along with control groups from areas with no radiation exposure. The increases in mutation rates as a result of the parents being exposed to ionizing radiation was "highly significant", the paper says. The changes may cause increased risk of cancers or genetic instability in future generations. One hopeful finding was that the mutation rate in children conceived long after their fathers' exposure was reduced the longer the fathers had been in a radiation-free environment.

...some documents - dating from 1971 to 1988 - include a report from 1984, which notes deficiencies in the third and fourth reactors, and also the poor quality of some equipment sent from Yugoslav companies.\n There are also references to an incident at the plant in 1982, in which small doses of radiation were released. The explosion on April 26, 1986 on the fourth reactor released 100 times the amount of radiation of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki put together. They contain a report by the Ukrainian KGB directorate to Moscow on systematic safety breaches during construction works between 1976 and 1979. The documents also include a report sent to Moscow on the day of the explosion, in which the then Ukrainian KGB chief, Lieutenant General S Mukha, says that his department "had taken control of the situation in the plant and the surrounding area". Mukha went on to say that "almost the entire population of the town of Prypiat (more than 44,500 people) was evacuated" by April 28. After the accident, the Chernobyl plant remained open for over another decade until it was finally shut down in December 2000.

I am Sergei Veslov aka Ghost. I was born on the 26th of May 1947 in this village. After school, I met Igor Velosedov aka Strelok, and we joined the UHSF Organisation. They needed fresh men, and they paid well.\n First, I was a truck driver. I transported the dead to the X18 lab for further experiments. They created something evil down there. In 1985, Strelok and I worked at X10. In 1986 before the accident at the NPP, the boss ordered us to go south. After the accident, we started to do our own business. Soonafter, we met Siro, a Russian guy that helped us with supplies and weapons. He did so because he said "eventually, this place will be crawling with illegals wanting some adventure. We can fund ourselves by supplying them with firearms and gear." He said he was from Moscow, and had contacts there, not in the mafia like we thought, but in the military. Strelok went back North, and talked with Doc about the UHSF Organization, and revealed some secrets. In 1990, the UHSF closed the X10 lab, and the one in Yantar too. We were useless... There were two options. They brainwash us, and send back to Kiev, or they kill us.\n We were hiding in this village for 3 years. At this point, Siro disappeared. In 2008, Strelok decided to go back to Pripyat, and find our old collegue, Fang. I haven't seen him since that day... I am not sure what to do. I have to get out from here. Strelok promised me, he would come back for that damn key to the Warlab. He wants to go there, I'm not sure why.\n Well, I guess I can't wait for him longer. I will seal this hiding place, and leave this device here for him. I'm going north, after him...

I got some virus at X16, when I and Prof. Kruglov went back for some datas. He was killed by zombies, so i ran back, but i found a strange box on the floor, i wish i had left it there. Now im infected with some virus, and Semenov told me to visit Prof. Vilheim's family house, but i did not find anything useful here, just an old crappy book in that other building not far from here. I am all alone and lost. Soon, these bacteries will eat my flesh and I will be just a skeleton, no more, oh god... If anyone will find me, and this note, please give it to Lt. Priboi. I'm gonna attach some classified documents to my letter. He will need it! Goddamn it, I never knew that they were working on a virus down there... Where the hell did this maniac hide the other antidotes??? I should go back to Yantar and talk to the Professor, but those bandits robbed him again last week, and they took the antidote too, they would never give it to me for free, and i don't have much money left.... ahh well, i only have a few minutes left. I guess, I have to wait until the end. I have this pistol, but I don't want to use it... yet.

Kruglov said, he hid documents with X18 code in Red Forest, here is a code to unlock a stash: 579781XY and the two last numbers are missing... I have to find it out!

Research Memo: \n A zombie is a dead person that is brought back to life through a curse (voodoo, necromancy) a virus or a mutation and has recovered some vital functions like movement. \n They are near-mindless, possessing little reasoning power, though many can perform "remembered behaviors" from their mortal existence. \n Zombies have been confused with many other monstrous creatures. Monstrous will try to make a clear distinction between the different entities that proceed from death. Some zombies have the appearance of the living but their lack of free will and souls give them the appearance of mechanical robots. \n Other display visible signs of desiccation, decay and emaciation on their face and body. They have blank, expressionless faces that become more animated when they get hungry and engage in a feeding frenzy. They are incapable of speech, but often tend to make moaning and guttural sounds. They are normally encountered wearing whatever clothing they wore in their human life, prior to reanimation. \n While not invulnerable to physical injury, zombies can suffer great damage to their bodies (including dismemberment) without being adversely affected. Dismembering the legs will render the zombie immobile, but the creature will still continue to subsist. 研究メモ： ゾンビはウィルスか変異によって若干の生理機能が回復し (Voodoo や Necromancy の) 呪いの如く生命が蘇った死人である。\nそれらは殆ど思考を持たず、論理性など皆無であるが、生前の「記憶行動」をとることができる。\nゾンビは他の奇怪な生物と混同されがちであるが、両者の間には明確な差異が存在する。ゾンビの中には生きているような外見をしているものもある。しかし、精神と意志の欠如によって機械的な動作しか体現することができない。\nまた乾燥、老朽、衰弱が全身に現れているゾンビもある。そういったものは空虚で無感情な表情をしているが、特に空腹時や獲物を見つけ熱狂する時などには生き生きとした顔つきになる。ゾンビが喋る事はないが、頻繁にうめき声やしわがれ声を発する。また通常、ゾンビとして蘇生する以前、まだ人間だった頃に身に着けていた衣服をまとった状態で放浪している。\n肉体的な損傷に対し完全無欠というわけではないが、身体の一部が欠落する等の重大な欠損にも難なく耐えうる。脚部の損失はその行動力を制限しはするが、活動を停止させるには及ばない。同様に、頭部の切断は肉体の活動を止めはするが、頭部は依然として「生きて」いる。\nメモは以上だ。\n\nふうむ…… どこかの写真と…… 4615 という暗証番号か。こいつは何かの役に立ちそうだし、持っていよう。
