The Japanese Marine Tsunami Debris Species Test Invasion Theory

Jhon Chapman
(Fisheries and Wildlife, Oregon State University)

  要旨
Mild-latitude ocean drift crossings by costal Asian species to North America on floating objects were unknown previous to 2012.
On 5 June 2012, a float from Misawa, Japan, covered with Asian algae and invertebrates, appeared on Agate Beach, Oregon.
North Pacific crossings from Asia to North America,
by open ocean pelagic species on floating objects carried by ocean currents has been observed for at least 200 years.
The tsunami debris are different than natural drifting objects.
The tsunami debris are new source for species introductions across the North Pacific.
Comparisons of the relative survival and persistence of debris species communities are providing powerful tests of invasion theory predictions.
