Adam Sandler is my MOST FAVORITE actor. While A24 is giving the Safdie Brothers “Uncut Gems” a U. S. domestic theatrical rollout starting from this Friday, for the rest of the world the film was picked up by Netflix earlier this year. It was hoped the film would follow the same pattern of other international acquisitions like “Annihilation” and “Shaft” where the film opened theatrically States-side and then would hit the streamer just 2-3 weeks later everywhere else. That isnt happening, but “Uncut Gems” had previously been teased as going to Netflix around the rest of the world in January. Today, The Age reporter Craig Matheson says Netflix has scheduled the film to hit January 31st on its Australian service. As this is expected to be a worldwide premiere, logically it will hit everywhere else (except North America) at the same time. This would fit with reports that the film is getting a limited theatrical run in the UK on January 10th ? some Netflix titles like “The King” and “The Irishman” have been screened in a handful of cinemas in Australia and other global cities around three weeks before their streaming premieres. That probably wont happen this time as Melbournes Cinema Nova tweeted today that there are no plans for a limited Australian theatrical run like they have done for other Netflix titles.

You cant wear 500 shoes, then you're making a political statement. I'm just walking around in the snow like Edgar Allan Poe. The things he says ?. Trailer song. Posted on Wednesday, September 11th, 2019 by The?Safdie Brothers love to make movies about down-and-out folks making one terrible choice after another. These movies are endurance tests of a sort ? narratives that ask: “How long can you put up with what the main character is putting up with? ”? Uncut Gems, the latest descent into poor choices from the filmmakers, pushes the situation to the limit, setting Adam Sandler on a journey from one terrible idea to the next. On one hand, its a treat to watch Sandler break out of his endless stream of bargain-basement Netflix comedies to try something like this. On the other hand, by the time the journey ends, you might want to watch one of those terrible comedies just to cleanse your palate. Adam Sandler can act. Sure, he doesnt have what youd call “range”, but when he feels like trying, he can turn in something remarkable.? Punch-Drunk Love is the best example of this, with Sandler using his angry man-child persona in a whole new light. The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is another wonderful outlier, with Sandler giving perhaps the quietest performance of his career. Even in dreck like? The Cobbler, Sandler illustrates untapped potential. So the prospect of seeing the actor in a new indie from the Safdie Brothers ( Good Time) is too good to ignore. But Sandler isnt doing anything new here. Once the novelty of watching him in this type of film wears off, all youre left with is another performance from the actor in which he shouts every single line like a man ordering a drink in a crowded bar. It wears you down after a while, man. And perhaps thats exactly the point ? perhaps the Safdies want you to walk out of? Uncut Gems and mutter, “Jesus Christ, that was exhausting. ” Opening with a shot that zooms into an opal and zooms out of Adam Sandlers asshole,? Uncut Gems is a saga of the choices people make when they put their faith in fetishized objects. The opal in question is extremely rare, and, according to Sandlers character, jeweler?Howard Ratner, worth millions. Howard gets his hands on the precious gem and plans to sell it at auction. It should be an open-and-shut case of moneymaking. But since this is a Safdie Brothers flick, nothing goes according to plan. Howard is addicted to gambling, and he has debts all over New York City. In theory, the auction will help him pay those debts. But he cant help himself and keeps fucking things up at every turn. Part of Howards business involves selling expensive jewelry to famous people ? most of whom are brought into the shop by his associate?Demany ( Lakeith Stanfield. One such famous face Demany brings in is basketball star Kevin Garnett (playing himself. Howard cant help but show-off his newly acquired opal to Garnett ? a choice that ends up hypnotizing Garnett, in a manner of speaking. The pro-baller takes one look at the opal and grows obsessed, asking to buy it. Howard tries to explain its not for sale, but after some heavy back-and-forth arguing, he agrees to loan the gem to Garnett for a few days. This move sets off a chain of events that pile one anxious situation on top of another, with Howard making things worse for himself every step of the way. Cinematographer ?Darius Khondji glides us along this journey, his camera up-close-and-personal as characters bicker, while editors? Ronald Bronstein and Benny Safdie keep things extra tense by quick-cutting through a barrage of shouted conversations. It all works to great effect, creating an overall atmosphere of darkly comedic dread. The entire film feels like a guillotine blade hovering over our heads, just waiting to drop. A heightened realism blankets everything thanks to the casting. Aside from Sandler and a few other familiar faces here and there, the bulk of the? Uncut Gems cast all seem like real people ? everyday New Yorkers the Safdies plucked off the street to pop-up in their film. But that realism hurts the film in some ways, because while everyone else here feels genuine, Sandler does not. He comes across as one of his loudmouth comedy characters transported into the middle of a?Safdie Brothers film ? and while that sounds cool on paper, it doesnt quite gel on screen. And yet, its hard to resist the pull of? Uncut Gems. As at-odds as Sandlers performance might be, its fascinating to watch him navigate the waters here. Sandler is often accused of being lazy, but any actor willing to appear in a film that begins with a camera pulling out of his asshole deserves at least? some ?acclaim. /Film Rating: 7 out of 10 Cool Posts From Around the Web.

In UNCUT GEMS, New York jeweler Howard Ratner ( Adam Sandler) is on the brink of a major windfall, having secured a precious block of rare black opal. That aside, his character's behavior is such a horror show that he misses the mark. No empathy can be felt for this pathological gambler. You never know when Adam Sandler is going to emerge from lowbrow comedies set in tropical locales to really, really make something. But when he does, he sure collaborates with some fascinating artists. From Paul Thomas Anderson to Noah Baumbach to, now, Josh and Benny Safdie, directing brothers who have slowly but surely emerged into the larger cinematic conversation by making small but very effective, stylish films about what many would consider “real New Yorkers, ” when Sandler gets serious, he also gets experimental. Just as the Safdies last film, Good Time, gave rise to career-best work from Robert Pattinson, Uncut Gems shows us an Adam Sandler weve never seen before. While most of the Billy Madison stars serious roles have been about more meek men, his character here, Howard Ratner, a Jewish jewelry store owner in Midtown Manhattan with a gambling addiction, exudes nothing but confidence. His fatal flaw is putting trust in others to do as they say theyre going to do when it comes to precious jewels, as well as relying on luck and intuition to fill in his blanks when they dont. Howard is a person desperate to live independently, he just needs to call in a few favors to do so. Sandlers big, loud take on Howard is perfect for the fast nature of New Yorks jewel trading culture, but its also deceptive, as a number of blink-and-youll-miss-‘em moments and glances mine the characters humanity for all its worth. The fact that Sandler is willing and entirely capable of going deep into Howards soul breathes life into the chaos of the films style. Watch the trailer for Uncut Gems below: The Safdie brothers continue to hone that here, employing rapid cuts, intense close-ups, harsh lighting, loads of neon, and a moody synth score to create a hectic, anxiety-inducing mood that assaults the senses until the films resolution. Theres a gorgeous grunge to the film reminiscent of 1970s Martin Scorsese, who fittingly serves as executive producer, as Uncut Gems winds up being a small-scale crime saga unafraid to dish out harsh realities, albeit with just enough heart. Its an aggressive film, visually and spiritually, though one with characters better off than most of the Safdies other leads. More money onscreen and off gives them more room to play as artists, but there is just a hint of extra grime from Good Time or even indie gem Heaven Knows What that its hard not to miss. Even so, this film does virtually no harm to their growing and genuinely deserved auteur status. The actual plot of the film revolves around Howard trying to get back a precious gem he bought from Ethiopian miners after he loans it to basketball star Kevin Garnett (who does a hilariously kooky riff on himself in an unusually sizable role. Uncut Gems slowly peels back the layers on just how many places Howard has money, as well as all the places he owes it, which lets the film unravel into a chaos of sad, unhealthy promises we can tell arent going to be fulfilled. Aside from Garnett, the rest of the supporting cast is strong as well. Idina Menzel, as Howards soon-to-be ex-wife, and Lakeith Stanfield, as the middle-man between Howard and Garnett, particularly stand out, as well as Eric Bogosian as one of the many people Howard owes money to, but with a unique emotional tie to him. Top 10 Adam Sandler Movies The way the script evolves this story is shockingly cohesive, considering just about every scene has 10 conversations happening at once. The chaos of the content and the style does, however, make it take a while before we can get invested in Howard, so the first act and part of the second feel a bit like an emotional plateau. But in that period, its easy to just marvel at Sandlers performance and all the different elements the Safdies are juggling at once. Most importantly, by the time we reach the insane third act, as tensions mount and characters take actions they cannot take back, we do come to really care for Howard. The ending packs an emotional wallop, but is entirely satisfying and serves the characters right. Uncut Gems is ultimately a story about how you cant trade good luck for goodwill, a lesson not every character learns by the end, and they suffer for it. But like a rare stone, films that combine down-to-Earth stakes and genuine emotional investment are hard to come by. The Safdie brothers have made another rough film, but once again theres a diamond at the center of it. Verdict The Safdie brothers continue their winning streak of making harshly real films about everyday New Yorkers with fatal flaws. But this time, theyve also given Adam Sandler a platform to show just how good he is with the right collaborators. The results are as stylish as they are affecting.

I grew up with a lot of Adam Sandler's comedies (Big Daddy being my favorite one) and I always really liked him as a actor. Unfortunately, I had never seen any of his dramas he did so this was my first experience of him being a dramatic actor. And I have to say he knocked it out of the park. His performance truly makes you care for his character, even if he isn't the greatest person in the world. You want to see him get out of this bad situation he is in. He has so much energy and is charismatic as well in the funnier moments.
I have seen a film from Josh and Benny Safdie before, that being Good Time, which I didn't really care for, but however they have absolutely improved in terms of directing here. They do a great job establishing a sense of urgency and intensity throughout it's runtime. I also like those shots where we go inside of the gem that bookends the film, I thought it was very fitting. The writing is very good, and had it's fair share of funny and crazy moments.
My only complaints are that the film is a bit slow at the beginning, it takes a little while for the story to actually get going, but it does establish the characters in the story so it's a very minor complaint. I also didn't really care for the ending, it felt to me like it came out of nowhere only because they wanted to be different. To me, it didn't work. But other than that, Uncut Gems is a solid film with a commanding performance from Sandler and lots of intensity. It's definitely worth checking out if you like Sandler or want a good character film.

Recent reviews So Adam Sandler is an actor now Adam Sandler plays himself if he never got famous Adam Sandler has always been a pretty polarizing actor. He's been in a lot of near unwatchable garbage, a few decent ones and then a couple that are completely stellar. I've always been confused by some of his choices because he's shown he has the chops to be something special. The good news is that this is one of those stellar ones and probably the best performance of his career. This is in your face and intense from the very start and doesn't really let up for two hours. It's kind of crazy how effectively they make this feel so "close" to the viewer. I read a couple things about people not being able to make it more than twenty… This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. This movie kept me on edge the entire time. What was the next move for Howard Ratner? Could the situation get any better or any worse? It was just an absolutely chaotic and intense chain of events. Adam Sandler really shows off his acting chops in this one and to be snubbed like that by the Academy is a damn shame. Maybe it wasnt safe enough for the Academys liking but wow what a performance. I hope he continues to take this sort of route for the rest of his career and not back to the rom-coms and mind numbing comedies weve seen in the past. Honestly it really just shows how people act upon their worst tendencies over and… HOLY SHIT The final minutes triggered my anxiety really bad, but whatever. So sobs Howard, the adrenaline-junkie diamond dealer gambling addict played by Adam Sandler in "Uncut Gems. Taking place over the course of a couple of days, Uncut Gems. directed by Josh and Benny Safdie, hurtles along a narrow track over a yawning abyss, following Howard as he attempts to pay down his huge gambling debts by, of course, placing increasingly risky bets. There's the hope that once he pays it all off, he'll wipe the slate clean, and repair some of the bridges he's burned. But everyone around Howard knows this is a fantasy. His addiction is too entrenched. The dazzle of the "uncut gems" in the title is not a surface shine. It glows at the center of the earth, it burns in Howard's core. Advertisement It makes sense, then, that "Uncut Gems" would start with a sequence where the camera goes inside a black?opal (dug out of the Welo opal mines in northern Ethiopia) which then morphs into the inside of a human colon. The colon of Howard, to be exact, as he endures a colonoscopy. The images on the hospital monitor look similar to the fantastical space of the opal's innards, its curves and layers. This is metaphor writ so large it's brazen, a theme hammered home with refreshing rhetorical candor. The opal is inside Howard, his need for it comes from the basest part of him. He lives in a state of "gold sickness" or "dragon sickness" so vividly described by J. R. Tolkien in The Hobbit) the hypnotic power of gems luring men into madness since the beginning of time, seeking pirate's gold, El Dorado, the Holy Grail, on doomed colonialist adventures. Howard's black opal is the same as any long-besought gem: it emanates a magical pull on all who look upon it. Its power is almost wholly symbolic. Co-written by the Safdies and regular collaborator Ronald Bronstein, Uncut Gems" immerses you in Howard's nutty cacophonous world. Howard's jewelry shop in New York's Diamond District is a tiny space with the atmosphere of a three-ring circus. The double entrance to his shop?requiring two buzzes?is a buffer between Howard and the world, giving him (at the most) 10 seconds lead time against anyone looking for him. His assistant Demany ( LaKeith Stanfield) hustles clients who might be interested in the flashy items in Howard's inventory, and the latest lure is Boston Celtics star Kevin Garnett (playing himself) waiting in the shop when Howard returns from the colonoscopy. Howard can't resist showing Garnett his latest acquisition: the opal, just arrived from Ethiopia, which Howard is putting it up for auction later in the week (at a hugely inflated price. He tells Garnett about how he feels connected to the Ethiopian Jews who dig up the opals, and his enthusiasm is so passionate it's catching. Garnett asks if he could borrow the opal for good luck at the upcoming Eastern Conference finals, and Howard says yes. Howard saying "yes" is the first of the many, many terrible choices he makes over the next 135 minutes. He owes so much money that goons follow him around, showing up at his office. These people mean business. His wife ( Idina Menzel) seethes with hatred for him. His daughter can barely tolerate him. He's put up his young mistress ( Julia Fox) in an apartment he's rented for her. Howard is always on the go, always running out of rooms, racing down sidewalks, charging across lobbies. And that's the thing about addiction, the thing that "Uncut Gems" really understands. On some level, the stress is the point. The nerve endings are so frayed they need ?the stress. Howard is useless without panic. So is his mistress, who also suffers from a form of "gold sickness. ” It is their main bond. This is not a "cautionary tale" about the dangers of gambling. It's more like a virtual-reality game where you step into Howard's experience. The Safdies use New York City in ways that haven't been seen since films in the '70s. The city has been so cleaned up and gentrified and homogenized it might be easy to forget that so much goes on at street-level, so much chaos, the marginalized and lost seeking a foothold, the grifters and hustlers slipping through the cracks, working their angles. The?Safdies. Heaven Knows What " was documentary-like in its approach, but their follow-up?" Good Time " was a race-against-the-clock thriller, its action sprawling over the five boroughs. The Safdies are nervy, funny, and comfortable with discomfort. Their characters have no access to comfort, and yet in every moment they're striving to escape, hustle, talk their way out of things, talk their way into things, get what they need, what they want. Veteran cinematographer Darius Khondji (a changeup from the Safdies' regular collaboration with Sean Price Williams) brings out the sickly gleam in this world, the green-fuzz of the interior lighting, the glamour of some of the interiors juxtaposed with the sleaze of the others. In a recent conversation between Adam Sandler and Brad Pitt for Variety's Actors on Actors series, Pitt observed that even though Howard makes all these bad choices in "Uncut Gems. you worry about the guy. It is Pitt's contention that this is because of Sandler's "warm-heartedness. something you always feel, no matter the material. I think there's something to that. You hear people expressing surprise when Sandler gives a good performance. There should be no surprise. When he's given good material, like Paul Thomas Anderson's "Punch Drunk Love. or Noah Baumbach's "The Meyerowitz Stories" to name just a few) he's as good as it gets. Behind his humor is pain and rage, both of which he is able to tap into. Here, as Howard, complete with goatee, fancy glasses, club" clothes, he is a portrait of a man living on the edge. He never stops talking. He never stops striving, scheming, shouting, hustling. In his eyes is the devotional gleam of the big score. "Self-delusion" is a redundant term. All delusions come from a willingness to buy into a fantasy, an off-chance, a long shot. In a delusion, your brain is a cage, and you are your own prison guard, monitoring the perimeters of allowable thought. Delusion feeds addiction, and addiction needs a constant supply of delusion. "Uncut Gems" shows this electrified-fence feedback loop like no other film in recent memory. It's excruciating and exhilarating. Reveal Comments comments powered by.

4 / 5 stars 4 out of 5 stars. A towering performance from the often tiresome actor drives an anxiety-inducing film about a risk-addicted jewelry dealer Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems. Photograph: A24 I n Uncut Gems, the Safdie brothers anxiety-inducing follow-up to Good Time, we spend over two hours attached at the hip to Adam Sandler, a prospect that might not seem particularly thrilling. But the guy who signed a mammoth deal with Netflix “because it rhymes with wet chicks” is also the guy who chose to work with Paul Thomas Anderson and Noah Baumbach, film-makers willing to look beyond the fart jokes to see an actor who just needs to be directed. Both roles were particularly compelling not just because they represented such a dramatic departure from the kind of movie we associate him with but also because his style of acting was suddenly so transformed. Often when comedy stars “go serious”, you can see the shadow of their funnier selves in every scene, but when taken out of his comfort zone, the Sandler we know virtually disappears. There was humour in both Punch-Drunk Love and The Meyerowitz Stories but it was awkward and intimate, more likely to make one shift in their seat than guffaw. Sandler has an under-appreciated ability to connect with the uncomfortable aspects of his more fleshed out characters, embarrassingly so at times, and his latest, arguably greatest, delve into drama pushes this to a whole new level. He plays fast-talking jewelry dealer Howard Ratner, a man who spends his days frantically trying to make money while being followed by the men he owes money to, an exhausting lifestyle he cant seem to escape. But the more we get to know Howard, the less it seems like he wants to, forever inserting himself in increasingly precarious situations. Howard is the best, and worst, kind of antihero, caught in a trap of his own making, a way out always frustratingly in sight. As in Good Time, the Safdies have plotted out a perilous obstacle course for their protagonist involving the NBA player Kevin Garnett, a rare opal from an Ethiopian mine, a soon-to-be-ex wife and The Weeknd, and despite Howard continually testing our patience, we are unavoidably invested, sighing at his every misstep, figuring out whether we want him to succeed or fail. Its an intentionally stressful experience, not just because of Howards aggressively frustrating character but because the Safdies take pleasure in our displeasure. The film packs in so many raised voices, blaring soundtrack choices and gaudy visuals that it often feels like a rather obnoxious sensory overload but were never alienated because theres a deceptive delicacy behind these excesses. Were hurtling through the world that Howard lives and works in and its not patronisingly translated or sanitised for us, its just presented as is, and I admired how atmospheric they made it, a world I never once doubted. I also never once doubted Sandler, whose incisive character work here is probably the most impressive acting we have seen from him to date. It would have been far too easy to turn Howard into an overly mannered cartoon but Sandler opts for something far more precise and grounded. Its a performance entirely lacking in vanity ? he makes Howard buffoonish at times, unpleasant at others ? and despite being an immediately recognisable star, my idea of Sandler and what he represents quickly faded once the film began. Its a turn as immersive as the film around him and makes you crave more outside of his almost entirely useless Netflix deal. Its a remarkable match-up between film-makers and actor and reaffirms the importance of that partnership, especially for a movie star stuck in a profitable rut. Sandler deserves more, and if he wants us to keep watching, then so do we. Uncut Gems is showing at the Toronto film festival and will be released in the US on 13 December with a UK date yet to be announced.

I don't know who Variety put in charge of these programs, but Variety needs to give the entire team a bonus.
