忘却からの帰還〜Atomic Age

第1次世界大戦の10年以上前の1902年に、「大都市破壊で何が起こるか」を我々示唆するものとして、「ソドムとゴモラ」が聖書にあると、Seventh-day Adventistの創設者のひとりであるEllen G Whiteは書いた：

The time is near when the large cities will be visited by the judgments of God. In a little while these cities will be terribly shaken. No matter how large or how strong their buildings, no matter how many safeguards against fire may have been provided, let God touch these buildings, and in a few minutes or a few hours they are in ruins. (832)

The ungodly cities of our world are to be swept away by the besom of destruction. In the calamities that are now befalling immense buildings and large portions of cities God is showing us what will come upon the whole earth. (833)

大都市に、神の裁きが訪れる時が近づいている。しばらくすると、これらの都市はひどく揺さぶられるだろう。建物がどれほど大きくても強くても、防火手段がどれだけあっても、神がこれらの建物に触れれば、数分あるいは数時間でそれらは廃墟になる。

我々の世界の不敬虔な都市は破壊の箒で一掃される。巨大な建物や都市の大部分に降り注ぐ災厄で、神は地球全体に何が起こるかを我々に示している。

それから半世紀、原子爆弾とその後の水素爆弾の登場、米ソ核戦争の可能性が現実化する。キューバ危機の4年前の1958年、、定期的に改訂される「"Bible Readings for the Home」に、上述のEllen G Whiteの記述を引用する形で、大都市破壊を示唆するものとしてソドムとゴモラを語る部分が追加された。

Of what is the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah a type?

"And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly." 2 Peter 2:6.

NOTE.—The destruction of such cities as Sodom and Gomorrah, Babylon, and Jerusalem, is set forth as a type of the destruction awaiting the world. Says one writer: "The time is near when the large cities will be visited by the judgments of God. In a little while, these cities will be terribly shaken. No matter how large or strong their buildings, no matter how many safeguards against fire may have been provided, let God touch these buildings, and in a few minutes or in a few hours they will be in ruins. The ungodly cities of our world are to be swept away by the besom of destruction. In the calamities that are now befalling immense buildings and large portions of the cities, God is showing us what will come upon the whole earth."

"Improved atomic bombs" will be "ideally suited to sudden unannounced attacks in which a country's major cities might be destroyed overnight by an ostensibly friendly power."—GENERAL H. H. ARNOLD) quoted in Questions and Answers About Atomic Energy, p. 4.

"Dispersal of cities is the only defense idea [against atomic war-fare] so far advanced which is even temporarily practical."—Ibid., p. 25. ''ソドムとゴモラの破壊とは何か？

「 また、ソドムとゴモラの町を灰の山と変え、地上から消し去りました（創世19章）。それは、後世の不敬虔な者への見せしめであり、それによって、彼らが神を恐れるようになるためでした。」 2ペテロ2：6。

ソドムとゴモラ、バビロン、エルサレムなどの都市の破壊は、世界が待ち受ける破壊の一種として示されている。ある著者は次のように述べている：「大都市に、神の裁きが訪れる時が近づいている。しばらくすると、これらの都市はひどく揺さぶられるだろう。建物がどれほど大きくても強くても、防火手段がどれだけあっても、神がこれらの建物に触れれば、数分あるいは数時間でそれらは廃墟になる。我々の世界の不敬虔な都市は破壊の箒で一掃される。巨大な建物や都市の大部分に降り注ぐ災厄で、神は地球全体に何が起こるかを我々に示している。」

「改良された原子爆弾は、表面上は友好国によって、国の主要都市を一夜にして破壊しうる、事前予告なき奇襲攻撃に、理想的に適合していた。」GENERAL H. H. ARNOLD ( Questions and Answers About Atomic Energy, p. 4.)

「都市の分散(疎開・避難)は、一時的にでも実用レベルこ進展した[原子戦争に対する]唯一の防御策である。」(ibid .p.25)。

いずれも、神が核兵器を使用したという話しではない。未来の破滅機戦争を予感させるものとして、「ソドムとゴモラ」の話を取り上げたものである。


なお、実際に「ソドムとゴモラは核兵器によって破壊された」という主張の初出はたソビエトの数学者Matest M. Agrestの1959年の記述である。
