Robert C Scull and Jacques Martial. Atom Bomb House, 1946, According to the Architects' Journal, the atom bomb had furnished -- at long last -- a real, functional reason for architects to adopt streamlining in their designs for living!

When the reality of global politics shifted, a new cold war version of the "house of tomorrow" emerged. In response to atomic age threats, New York in-dustrial designers Jacques Martial and Robert C. Scull devised two versions of their "Atom Bomb House" (fig. 8.5). Combining earlier domestic fantasies with atomic age realities, the designers incorporated the bomb shelter idiom of civil defense into the new "house of tomorrow's" design. In Martial and Skull's plan, the conventional picket fence is abandoned for a concrete slab that encircles the dwelling like a rampart, suggesting that fortification will be the new sales gim-mick for the cold war's "shelter of tomorrow?' Ironically, the slanted bulwark is well suited to the modernist, streamlined styling of the Atom Bomb House. The bulwark's functionalist appearance lends not only some protection from an atomic blast but also privacy in an expanding postwar suburbia.
