More plausible fictional examples of the effects of radiation are the menagerie of mutants that parade through postapocalyptic novels and films. In A Canticle for Leibowitz, characters with spotted face, horns, two heads, and so forth make appearances without unduly shocking the other people in the book. In Riddley Walker, the "Eusa folk" lack eyes, noses, or ears. Because these mutations, although bizarre, are less extreme than giant insects, we may find them more plausible. Interestingly, however, they may be no more accurate. We know, of course, of instances of children being born handicapped in some way because chemical pollution or excess radiation in their mothers' environments caused genetic damage, but whether or not the level of radiation in a full-scale nuclear war would lead to mutations of the magnitude portrayed in these works is by no means certain. Strieber and Kunetka confront this question in Warday. After discussing rumors about dramatic forms of mutation—giant man-eating bats, monstrous children who claw their way out of their mothers wombs, etc.—they admit that they have found no proof of such mutations. They do, however, find less spectacular but more pathetic forms: children born with decreased mental capacity or without limbs. Since these forms of genetic mutations are more in keeping with known cases of such deformities, they may be more plausible and, therefore, provide a stronger argument.

RUMOR: Radiation has caused many terrible mutations, such as babies who claw their way out of the mother's womb just as the first contractions of labor start. Also, babies who are born with the genitals of adults, or women having animal children, usually monkeys or pigs.

FACT: We have great difficulty getting used to the high level of mutation that is an inevitable side-effect of high ambient radiation. Naturally, mutations occur with greatest frequency in areas most seriously radiated. A mother in California, for example, has little more chance of bearing a mutant child than before the war, but a mother in Dallas is many times more likely to bear a mutant.

Mutations take two basic forms, degenerative and progressive. Ninety-nine out of a hundred degenerative mutations involve some sort of destruction or malformation of the fetus. They never involve atavism, such as a woman giving birth to an animal child. Such a mutation is probably not possible. Nor are they likely to involve such farfetched nonsense as babies with claws or babies with fully developed genitals. The truth is much more prosaic, and much sadder. Common mutations are malformed limbs, bones, or eyes, brain disorders, and malfunctioning organs, such as improperly formed hearts. In cases where the mutant is declared non-viable on the Hexler Function Scale, the parents may elect euthanasia. ...

Orfing and his hevvys looking on. The Ardship and the Eusa folk looking on as wel. Faces like bad dreams. Faces with 3 eyes and no nose. Faces with 1 eye and a snout. Humps on backs and hans growing out of sholders wer the leas of it they had every kynd of crookitness and ther shapes and shadders wintering and wayvering on the wall with the shadder of Goodparley twissing and terning. The black leader he laid back his ears and poyntit his nose up at the shadders and he begun to howl. Some of the hevvys uppit bow but the black leader stayd where he wer.
