| Tomris Laffly February 21, 2020 A vivid yet languid ‘70s mood out of a John Cassavetes film, complete with a softly intoxicating score, welcomes you into the world of “Goldie” in its early moments. Then with a serene pace, writer/director Sam de Jong ’s electric touches light up the screen with humanistic hues: we are in a colorful and energetic corner of the Bronx, following a young woman leading a life that stands in such stark contrast to all the vibrancy that surrounds her. Played by Instagram model Slick Woods in a stunning debut performance, she is the 18-year-old title character Goldie, holding on to the dream of becoming a famous dancer one day. While her youthful mind and soul keep her vision alive against all the odds, she pursues a lucky break in a rap video any which way that she can. Advertisement One of the vessels through which she keeps her goal in tact happens to be a plush, bright yellow fur coat?something that could be out of a hip magazine cover Goldie covets as much as Ellen Burstyn treasures an old red dress in Darren Aronofsky's “ Requiem for a Dream. ” But the trancelike, at times, feverish quality of “Goldie” is closer to Harmony Korine in spirit, and isn’t dark like the Aronofsky film, even though Goldie sees the coat as a sign of salvation much like Burstyn perceives the crimson garment as the symbolic end of her doom and gloom. In fact, however realistic and honest de Jong maintains his scrappy tale, he also can’t help but inject the story with generous doses of optimism while tracing Goldie as she hustles her way through one dead-end deal to the next, trying to get closer to the coat and maybe even fame. Through these brisk narrative beats, the filmmaker’s music background makes itself known at once. With the animations of Smith & Lee, the director paints the innocent viewpoint of Goldie onto the screen, making the vigorous, multicolored graphics an essential part of the kaleidoscopic experience. But that doesn’t mean we don’t see the gradual erasure of the lead character’s intoxicating childlike wonder. Goldie’s days in the family shelter she lives at prove to be numbered, when her mother gets arrested and consequently, Goldie loses her connection to a steady supply of cash she used to steal from her mom’s drug-dealer boyfriend. Now unwittingly in charge of her two younger sisters while fighting to make ends meet, Goldie goes door to door, searching for the kind of life that doesn’t seem to exist for a down-on-her-luck Bronx teenager. A dysfunctional system threatening to pluck away her sisters and put them in the hands of child protective services only makes things harder. Still, Goldie battles her way forward, often times with a dancer-ly spring in her step. Along the way, she crosses paths with an ex-teacher ( Edwina Findley Dickerson). “You need a stable home, some structure and an adult in your life, ” the educator wisely advises, hinting that the kids would be better off with authorities. Also in Goldie’s mix-tape are an abusive former lover and a well-meaning ex-con who can’t help her with anything permanent. So without much choice, Goldie eventually finds herself trapped in the illegal dealings of her mom’s ex, which she barely manages to get out of. Throughout, de Jong both romanticizes the unique vigor of New York City (especially the Bronx), and seeps the viewer into its harsh realities as everything grows more impossible for Goldie by the minute. Still, the filmmaker seems to have a lot more to say about lovable Goldie’s inner, naive world than her perpetual lack of privilege in an uncharitable city as unfair as they come. But that bug is somehow the main charm of “Goldie. ” Despite the heartbreaking notes of its ending, this vibrant film makes you want to believe that things will somehow and magically turn out OK for her, simply because she deserves it. The first superstar produced by the breakbeat jungle movement, Goldie popularized drum'n'bass as a form of musical expression just as relevant for living-room contemplation as techno had become by the early '90s. Though he hardly developed the style, and his later reliance on engineers like Rob Playford and Optical to capture his sound puts into question his true musical importance, Goldie became one of the first personalities in British dance music, his gold teeth and b-boy attitude placing him leagues away from the faceless bedroom boffins who had become the norm in intelligent dance music. For the first time, England had a beat maestro and tough-guy head who could match the scores of larger-than-life hip-hop stars America had produced, and the high profile of drum'n'bass as the first indigenously British dance music made Goldie a figure of prime importance. After spending several years working on his production skills at Reinforced Records (the home of 4hero), he founded Metalheadz Records, which released seminal dark yet intelligent singles by Source Direct, Photek, J. Majik, Optical, Lemon D, Wax Doctor, and Peshay, among others. In 1995, Goldie released Timeless, one of jungle's first and best full-length works of art. The album put him squarely at the top of the drum'n'bass heap -- at least in the minds of critics and mainstream listeners -- though his follow-up, SaturnzReturn, displayed an ambitious, personal side of Goldie hardly in keeping with jungle's producer mentality. A native of Walsall, England, Goldie was born to a Scottish-Jamaican couple and put up for adoption. He bounced around child-care homes and several sets of foster parents during his childhood years, and became fascinated with the rise of hip-hop, breakdancing, and graffiti art. By 1986, he was involved with breakdancing crews around his home of Wolverhampton; after making several trips to London for all-day breakdancing events (and to see hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa), Goldie appeared in the English documentary on graffiti art called Bombing. He also spent time in New York and Miami (working in a market stall selling customized gold teeth), but returned to England by 1988. For a time, Goldie worked at the Try 1 shop in Walsall (also selling gold teeth), then moved to London. He began hanging out with two fellow heads from the British hip-hop scene, Nellee Hooper and 3-D (later of Massive Attack), and by 1991 he'd been introduced to the breakbeat culture that birthed jungle; at the seminal club night Rage, DJs Grooverider and Fabio pitched ancient breakbeats up to 45 rpm, blending their creations with the popular rave music of the time. Goldie was hooked on the sound of raw breakbeat techno, and he gradually switched his allegiance to jungle from the British hip-hop scene that later generated trip-hop. Through his girlfriend DJ Kemistry (later to make her name with the mixing duo Kemistry & Storm), Goldie hooked up with Dego and Mark Mac, two of the most influential figures in the emerging drum'n'bass scene. The duo's Reinforced Records and recordings as 4hero were fostering an increasingly artistic attitude to the music, and Goldie learned much about breakbeat production and engineering at their studios. He recorded his first single as Ajax Project, then debuted on Reinforced as Metalheadz with two 1992 singles, "Killermuffin" and "Menace. " The 1993 single "Terminator" broke him into the jungle scene -- besides pioneering the crucial jungle concept of time-stretching (basically extending a sample without altering its pitch) the single evinced the growing separation between the uplifting rave scene and its emerging dark side, reliant on breakbeats and restless vibes. The name was later taken for his influential Metalheadz Records, which released material from a legion of crucial jungle artists: Photek, Doc Scott, Dillinja, Source Direct, Peshay, J Majik, Alex Reece, Lemon D, and Optical, among others. Later singles such as "Angel" and remixes for 4hero's Reinforced label spread Goldie's fame, and in 1995 he signed a contract with London Records. His first major-label single was "Timeless, " and his debut album of the same name followed in August 1995. He gained additional fame in early 1996, when an American tour supporting Björk sparked a relationship between the two and led to a brief engagement period before they called off a wedding. Goldie resurfaced in 1998 with a high-profile follow-up, SaturnzReturn, an epic two-disc set including one track, "Mother, " that in itself broke the 70-minute barrier. The album tanked with critics and fans, leading to a return to the underground later that year with the Ring of Saturn EP. Save for a handful of mix albums (most notably 2011's Fabriclive 58), two studio efforts credited to Rufige Kru (2007's Malice in Wonderland and 2009's Memoirs of an Afterlife), and Sine Tempus, the 2008 soundtrack to an unreleased film directed by the man himself, Goldie's career over the next two decades became less and less music-focused. He turned his hand to acting, appearing in Guy Ritchie's Snatch, the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough, and the perennial BBC soap opera Eastenders. He also appeared on a number of reality TV shows, including Maestro, where he learned how to conduct a symphony orchestra, and Goldie's Band: By Royal Appointment, where he put together a band of unknowns to perform at Buckingham Palace. He was awarded an MBE on the Queen's 2016 Honours list for services to music and young people. A career-spanning compilation, The Alchemist, was released by Rhino in 2013. Goldie's third solo studio album and first in nearly two decades, entitled The Journey Man, came out in 2017 through Cooking Vinyl. Guest vocalists on the album included Terri Walker, Naomi Pryor, José James, and Natalie Duncan, whom he had discovered while making Goldie's Band TV show.,, Facebook, SoundCloud, Twitter, Bookogs, YouTube,,, Wikipedia, Posterogs, Filmogs.
Home Blog Goldie's Blog The Sex Addicted Narcissist Submitted by Goldie on Jan 24 - 9AM Sometimes YOU are the last to know. Or you sense it, yet have no proof. Or you know it, yet choose to stay in denial. Or you find out and he promises to stop or change. Not likely in this life time. Is your narcissist a sex addict and you don't know it or are in denial? My narcissist never cheated on me is a common war cry on here. Are you sure about this? You don't need to SEE it happening to make it true. Many narcissists are clever with keeping their sex addiction from you. Often, you are the last to know. The Narcissist Playing the God Card Submitted by Goldie on Sep 14 - 11AM Playing the God card and therapy with a narcissist: Let's get real here, shall we? "Do as say, not as I do. " Sound familiar? The narcissist was jumping for joy the day that app was launched. The players paradise, no longer will there be any evidence in print. Text Messages, Romantic gestures? Lazy? Or MAJOR Red Flags. TEXTS do not = Love. A TEXT Message is not a contract, commitment, date, gift, or proof of ones love and devotion. It is a text. A few seconds out of someone's day. Most likely they are avoiding OW (which is also you at times) while texting you. Or some other unsavory behavior. Texting is one of a cheaters/players/Narcissists favorite tools. Keeps YOU thinking he is connected to you, regardless to what he is actually doing. So you think the sex was intense with the Narcissist? What is great sex anyway? Submitted by Goldie on Jan 9 - 2PM Great sex does not necessarily always translate into two people in a deeply loving connection. This is clearly illustrated in the mixed messages, words not matching the actions, type of a relationship with a narcissist. INTENSITY is often misinterpreted for many of us and perceived as a substitute for INTIMACY (love). This intensity stems from the tension created in us by the narcissist. This tension is received in our bodies, minds, and hearts, as anxiety, emptiness, and pain triggered by the mind games (push/pull). #WhyIStayed Submitted by Goldie on Sep 12 - 12PM On living with abuse and violence from the one you "love. Also a GREAT SONG/theme for the Narcissist's HOOVER, I LOVE you NOW BABY!!!! Does he? Do Narcissist's love just ONE GIRL? Can a leopard change his spots? Are YOU holding out for this one in a million? Fooled Around and Fell in Love Elvin Bishop Jeffrey Bailey edited the lyrics I must have been through about a million girls I love 'em and I leave 'em alone I didn't care how much they cried, no sir Their tears left me cold as a stone But then I fooled around and fell in love It used to be when I'd see a girl that I like I'd get out my book and write down her name But when the grass got a little greener on the other side I'd just tear out that page Trust your instincts about the Narcissist in your life. Our instincts are our inner shield for protection and safety from harm's way in our live's Submitted by Goldie on Aug 31 - 4PM Trust your instincts Your instincts are your truth. No, I did not say to trust your addiction. We cannot trust our addictions, they are not our instincts. Addictions take us to places of avoidance. Instincts take us to a place of truth. Generally when we find ourselves in an addictive state of any nature, food, people, shopping, alcohol, gambling, sex, toxic relationships, and so on, we are in avoidance mode. Addiction = avoidance of generally pain and truth. Our honest true feelings and what we see. The truth is too painful so we become addicted to avoid the truth. Often it is said of addiction, is that the person has on their running shoe's. And what are they running from? Watch full goldie live. Watch Full golden retriever. Watch Full goodies. Watch full goldie season. Snatched starts strong, with a solid first act based in character-driven comedy featuring two generations of funny women. Amy Schumer stars as Emily, a vapid asshole who is stuck with a non-refundable trip to Ecuador after her musician boyfriend (Randall Park, hilarious in one scene) dumps her because his budding rockstar status offers him a buffet of pussy. The opening scenes establish Emily as the kind of Instagram Millennial everyone loves to hate?shallow, obsessed with status, and using filters and strategic staging to make her life look better than it is. Schumer excels at playing “unlikeable” women, and Emily is highly unlikeable. She genuinely doesn’t seem to understand why no one will go to Ecuador with her, even as one friend texts back, “You owe me $300, ” which is everything we need to know about her. Stuck with that non-refundable ticket, though, she’s determined to go on her trip, which is how she ends up convincing her shut-in mother, Linda, to go with her. Goldie Hawn hasn’t been in a film in fifteen years, not since 2002’s The Banger Sisters, and Snatched deserves some credit for getting her back on the big screen, even though Linda is not what you would typically consider a “Goldie Hawn character”, as she’s uptight and introverted and nervous. But Hawn finds all the angles and makes Linda as funny as she can, given that she is side-lined for a chunk of the film. Which is one of the bigger problems in Snatched. Hawn and Schumer have a great rapport, and there’s something to the dynamic of Schumer playing an overgrown wild-child and Hawn playing her mother as a reformed wild-child, but Hawn doesn’t get enough to do, nor does the movie make a strong enough connection between Emily as she is and Linda as she was. It’s just a suggestion early on that never goes anywhere, which is a shame because building Emily’s arc around growing up enough to understand the responsibilities that changed her mother would solve the movie’s biggest problem: Its white savior complex. As the title suggests, once in Ecuador Emily and Linda are snatched?kidnapped and held for ransom by a gangster called Morgado (Oscar Jaenada, who you can see dying on the inside as he has to play a very cheap stereotype). Emily and Linda manage an escape and while on the run, they take shelter with an indigenous tribe in the Amazon. Emily watches the women bringing water to their village, and eventually gets involved herself, and then ends up learning all her lessons and accomplishing all her growth because she discovers how rewarding it is to be a white blonde woman helping brown people. It’s as bad as it sounds. So Snatched ends up being a mixed bag. The first half hour is GREAT, with Schumer playing her brand of “the way it really is” feminine gross-out humor, and Hawn reveling in Linda’s uptight weirdness. And the supporting cast is full of funny people (mostly) utilized well, including Wanda Sykes and Joan Cusack as a pair of intense tourists intent on helping Emily and Linda, and Christopher Meloni as a useless jungle guide. (Meloni is ALWAYS funny, but he’s not as well utilized here as he is in They Came Together. ) Ike Barinholtz steals every scene he’s in as Emily’s co-dependent, agoraphobic brother?he’s so good, he’s entering Jason Mantzoukas territory as a secondary player who really needs his own movie. But you can’t get away from the awfulness of the kidnap plot, with its racist stereotypes and white savior trope. There’s a smarter movie here, involving the alternate reality of Instagram and how that can screw up your real life, and the misunderstanding between a single mom and her spoiled daughter. Snatched lands on some funny bits, like Al Madrigal popping up as an inefficient consulate employee who wants to get rid of Emily before she exposes that he doesn’t know what he’s doing, but then it will see-saw back to stereotypes. It can’t maintain its rhythm and when it needs to go specific, it goes broad, like a gross-out gag featuring a tape worm that belongs in another (worse) movie entirely. It’s not a total loss, not with Schumer and Hawn, but given their talents, it should have been a whole lot better. Snatched will make you wince as much as it makes you laugh. Photos: WENN ?.
