Guy Ritchie's back to his roots. When The Waves Are Slidy Dont Turn Around!????. Homepage - VHYes A film by Jack Henry Robbins VHYES A bizarre retro comedy shot entirely on VHS, VHYes takes us back to a simpler time, when twelve-year-old Ralph mistakenly records home videos and his favorite late night shows over his parents’ wedding tape. The result is a nostalgic wave of home shopping clips, censored pornography, and nefarious true-crime tales that threaten to unkindly rewind Ralph’s reality. ? CRITICS SAY... “The comedy here is high enough that simply being funny would have been enough, but VHYES strives for meaning as well, which is what makes the film such a special delight. ” “Bounces along with the exuberance of its young hero and will remind you of the experience of trying to make sense of the world as a child. ” ? Jennie Kermode, EYE FOR FILM “VHYES is filled with heartfelt hilarity. ” ? Evan Saathoff, BIRTH. MOVIES. So excited for this. Looks like something out of Wham City. The military constantly forces journalist not to film casualties. Guess the combat camera in the usmc has their own rules. Free full history documentaries on youtube. | Nick Allen January 17, 2020 A sense of humor is a funny thing, especially for those of us who treasure the weird stuff. When something that's "out there" works, it’s true love. When it doesn’t, it’s like a bad date that had huge promise until it got underway. Jack Henry Robbins'?“VHYes, ” with all of its nostalgia for late ‘80s TV and its endemic cheesiness, follows after the likes of Weird Al Yankovic's masterpiece " UHF, "?Casper Kelly's endlessly loopable opening credits hellscape "Too Many Cooks, "?and even the Kyle Mooney skits that are "cut for time" on "Saturday Night Live. " And while I adore all of those polarizing works, I didn't see what was funny about the shallow wackiness of "VHYes. " Advertisement Shot entirely on VHS and Betamax, the whole of "VHYes" is presented as the contents of a video tape, which was initially used to film the wedding for the parents of a young boy named Ralph ( Mason McNulty). When Ralph gets a camera for Christmas in 1987, and learns that he can record from the TV, it opens a world of possibilities. Namely, whatever he can find on the TV that is weird to him at the time. In one of its many abrupt, fuzzy cuts, an excited young Ralph jumps on his bed and?says that he wants to create the ultimate video playlist, and soon into watching “VHYes” you accept that that’s all you’re going to get.? Instead of feeling like the chaos of a found tape, “VHYes” assembles itself like a series of?sketches that it can bounce between, with random peeks back at the original wedding video contents; it struggles to have a heart?by intermittently making it a story about Ralph realizing the truth behind his parents' marriage. Some sketch set-ups are directly, lazily recognizable to TV history: one cop parody steals the red and blue text from “Law and Order” because you wouldn’t get that it’s meant to parody if it didn’t have that logo. As if a tell on its weak absurdity, "VHYes" has yet another parody on TV painting instructor?Bob Ross (even after Deadpool did it), with a segment starring Kerri Kenney, who?turns the zen of such a host into the mindset of a creepy person who believes in aliens.? The very nostalgia within the concept becomes a pit, even when “VHYes” threatens to get truly weird. It’s not until the final minutes that the movie taps into the reality-bending that had been hinted at earlier, when Ralph started to see himself in the stuff he was watching, after one segment involved a VHS expert talking about the soul-suck that will be handheld recording in the future. Many parody sketches don’t have a discernible reference to build on (the recognition is what makes it initially funny), and instead rely on a shallow cheesiness. Even though "VHYes" features many dynamic funny people like Kenney, Thomas Lennon, Mark Prosch, Charlyne?Yi, and Robbins' parents ( Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon), many of?the characters in these sketches are so broad they aren't particularly clever. “VHYes” breaks the biggest rule of parody, over and over again: it simply tries way too hard with material that’s far too easy. That’s the case with an adult film bit that goes for low-hanging fruit of bad acting, as one guy is poorly reading cue cards in a late night movie about three alien women. Or there's an ongoing true-crime show about how a sorority thought one of their sisters was a witch because she did magic, which is a funny premise given a flat?execution. The commercials that are thrown in the mix, like about a violent security company, or pads to sound-proof your bathroom, are like random splatters of paint whose only intention is to fulfill the project's obvious?self-amusement.? While “VHYes” is very much inspired by the?media experience of?1987, it’s actually about a very modern hell: Your friend sits you down to show you something really funny on YouTube, but oh, no?they’ve misjudged your sense of humor. Now you’re stuck, watching all of it,?trying to find something funny to offer a polite relief. I started to feel trapped by my obligation to watch something that could very well have been my type, but now I’m just grateful the filmmakers of “VHYes” didn’t watch me watch it in laughless silence. Sketches tend to be a few minutes long, featuring self-contained stories and characters; they’re meant to be brief, never pushing a joke past the point where it’s still funny. So sketches generally haven’t fared well when they’re transformed into feature films. Clunky sketch-derived movies like A Night at the Roxbury, Coneheads, and Superstar just prove the point; what was funny for four or five minutes feels like flogging a dead horse at feature length. Jack Henry Robbins’ VHYES beats the system by approaching the idea of a sketch movie from the opposite direction. Instead of trying to stretch out one sketch to feature length, Robbins packs his film full of sketches that seem unrelated, until they coalesce into a single story. Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim has thrived on weird sketch comedy, with programs like Robot Chicken and Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! VHYES initially feels like an extended episode of a similar series. Young Ralph (Mason McNulty) has a new video camera, and he’s used it to tape over his parents’ wedding VHS. The film is meant to be the result: a mixture of footage from the wedding, Ralph’s recordings of life around the house, and various programs taped off TV. The new Bob Ross. Image: Oscilloscope Each TV-show bit parodies a familiar bit of TV lore, from Bob Ross’ painting tutorials to Antiques Roadshow. But they all come with twists: the painter in the tutorial show includes a segment meant to help viewers sleep, in which she simply stares into the camera, waiting for the audience to nod off. The shopping-channel hosts begin shilling for objects they claim are for regular use around the house, but are clearly drug paraphernalia. The bits and pieces are perfectly strange, and they feature some of the best comedians currently working. Kerri Kenney ( Reno! 911) plays the Bob Ross-esque figure, Thomas Lennon (also of Reno! 911) plays one of the shopping-channel hosts, and Mark Proksch (the What We Do in the Shadows series, Better Call Saul) plays the appraiser. They all nail the transition from standard TV programming to increasingly discomfiting chaos. As the clips alternate with footage from Ralph’s life, hanging out with his mother (Christian Drerup) or his best friend Josh (Rahm Braslaw), it gradually becomes clear that everything is connected. VHYES is a story about a child reckoning with his parents’ divorce. The formerly neat, gentle world of late-night TV starts to blur and become cruel as Ralph realizes that his parents’ marriage is falling apart. The sketches break down as clips of the seemingly idyllic wedding still flash across the screen, emphasizing a sense of rudderlessness, as well as how confusing and inconceivable the impending break-up feels. Courtney Pauroso and Tom Lennon as channel hosts. The slow reveal of exactly what’s happening is masterful. The bite-sized bits of late-night programming create the illusion that VHYES is a collection of discrete parts rather than a whole; it feels an experimental film, and the revelation that the film is telling a more straightforward story isn’t a disappointment as much as it is a sort of twist. What makes VHYES even more remarkable is the fact that it’s actually entirely shot on VHS. The movie is in the nearly square VHS 4:3 aspect ratio, and it’s slightly grainy, accompanied by occasional lines of visual static. Nostalgia has hit it big in series like Stranger Things and the It movie franchise, but the commitment to VHS means VHYES actually feels like it was made in the era it’s depicting. (It’s almost jarring to see the director’s parents, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, crop up in cameo appearances, as they’re the only overt clues that the movie wasn’t actually made in the 1980s. ) Jack Henry Robbins, who co-wrote the film with Nunzio Randazzo, eventually takes the absurdity threaded throughout the film to an almost David Lynchian level, a gambit that works largely because of the sketch-y nature of the movie, and how brief it is at just 72 minutes. The strangeness of the material isn’t VHYES’ primary attraction; it’s the atypical mode of storytelling and sense of sincerity. Given that the story isn’t exactly linear ? the audience pieces it together through multiple shows and stories ? the amount of Ralph’s story that can explicitly be told is lessened. So Robbins focuses on conveying emotions through the footage that’s been cut together, creating an arc that’s tangible rather than literally told. He’s figured out how to make a successful sketch movie, and he’s tapped into nostalgia better than any of the Steven Spielberg or Stephen King would-bes mining the same vein. VHYES debuts in theaters Jan. 17.
0:53 what is this music? Its so good. VHYes certainly brings back the nostalgia by taking us back to a time when television viewing was very different in a pre-digital era. To say that they don’t make films like they used to would not be an understatement.? When was the last time that you watched a VHS tape let alone filmed anything on cassette?? Don’t answer that.? It’s a rhetorical question.? While most films are shot in digital in this era, VHYes goes yard for some old-school storytelling. Writer-director Jack Henry Robbins expands on Sundance short films Painting with Joan and Hot Winter.? The premise alone makes for some storytelling decisions that will be hit-or-miss with audiences.? Honestly, the film isn’t a traditional narrative with regards to what viewers are used to watching.? VHYes also isn’t an outright sketch comedy either because of the tape’s structure.? Kerri Kenney-Silver reprises her role as Joan. Ralph () is just short of becoming a teenager.? He manages to commit the cardinal sin that is recording over his parents’ wedding tape.? All because of receiving a camcorder for the holidays.? Funny enough, the present comes at a moment in time when his parents’ marriage is in turmoil.? One can only hope that there’s another copy lying around because he does enough damage to get grounded for all of eternity.? What Ralph ends up doing is shoot his own home videos and record late night shows.? When we aren’t watching his home videos, VHYes features a mix of channel surfing.? As you could easily guess, there is at least one home shopping show because it wouldn’t be the 1980s without one! The film is rather short at just over 70 minutes in length.? Again, it’s not the traditional film.? One could say that the feature is experimental in nature.? At the same time, Jack Henry Robbins offers some commentary on our current era.? You know?the culture that watches so many YouTube videos.? Look at what we can do with our cell phones.? Minus the taping over of videos, Ralph is documenting his day no differently than we do right now.? It isn’t just YouTube but Instagram offers much of the same type of documenting. While Robbins surely has something to say about today’s culture, everything in VHYes has to connect in one way or another.? One can only imagine what the editing process was like especially with the channel surfing. DIRECTOR:? Jack Henry Robbins SCREENWRITERS:? Nunzio Randazzo and Jack Henry Robbins CAST:?
