I was nodding off for the first half or so of the movie, but I DID manage to catch this song and HAD to find it on YouTube. Black christmas soundtrack. Oh my god. I've heard about this film for years and have heard how great it was but nothing could of prepared me for how much I loved the film. I loved the cinematography, the atmosphere, the mounting dread as the girls are picked off one by one and the house seems to get bigger and more cold as this happens. I also thought the subplot surrounding the girl going missing/being found dead in the park was a great addition and a great way to distract a lot of the police from the sorority house. I thought the last act was so chilling and scary to me. Everything from Jess getting told the calls are coming from inside the house, to her stumbling to the door confused on wanting to leave but also wanting to get her friends. I loved the moment she saw Billy behind the door and slammed into it, that whole chase scene into the basement made me jump out of my seat because it's been building to this moment. I fucking loved this movie It's also very easy to see where John Carpenter got a lot of his influences from. We have a small central cast of female characters, an isolated house, a POV perspective from the killer and an open ending. 'Halloween' takes a lot of the aspects of this films and shines them into perfection. It's safe to say that 'Halloween' quite possibly might not have been as loved or as acclaimed if John didn't use these tactics. Not to say John doesn't know how to direct but he used these already great templates and placed them in his film. The original 'Halloween' is a masterpiece and so is 'Black Christmas'. But I do really wish 'Black Christmas' had the same reputation that 'Halloween' did. The film has received acclaimed and is beloved my many, but it's not nearly as lauded and iconic as 'Halloween' is. I also watched a behind the scenes making of right after this film, and they talked to other directors who made slasher films who subconsciously used stuff from 'Black Christmas' in their films. For example, the director of 'My Bloody Valentine' said that his ending of his movie which involves Axel singing this creepy lullaby as he backs away into the darkness of the minds is similar to the song Billy sings in 'Black Christmas. Also, the original title of this film was 'Stop Me'. I wonder why that was the original title and I wonder if this was the title that was kept, would it have changed slashers as we know it since so many of them are named after holidays. I also wish this is the type of film that 'When A Stranger Calls' (1979) was. I wish it cut out the poorly done, awkward character study and stayed in the house the entire time. Bottomline. I fucking loved this film and am mad at myself for taking this long to finally watching it. It's a classic and pioneer in every sense of the word. I loved it.

Black christmas cards. To female and female identifying horror fans, go see this movie it's a delight. And it's a joy to watch a horror movie that is written by women, directed by a woman, for women. It fantastic to watch something not filmed for the male gaze and not aimed at the male watcher. The horror is directed at the female experience and you will feel the fear as things happen on screen because sadly as women we either have either faced many of the perils faced by these girls. (hopefully not facing down killers) but sadly many of the other things they highlight.

Give it a shot and don't listen to the naysayers.

This is not just a horror movie, it's a horror movie a social message. And that message is. Wait for it. Men are the worst, and women are no longer weak, they are strong and they will fight against the toxic masculinity! I'll be clear there is no problem with a movie having a social message, it can work in movies, but you need interesting characters, intrigue, good pacing and more importantly, you need and interesting premise at the core of the movie! This movie does not have that, it's all about its message about how vile men are! Its social message is ridiculously integral to its plot, its its whole premise. It's so preachy it actually annoyed me, if my eldest son was not with me, pissing himself laughing at how bad it was, I would have walked out! Maybe I'm not the target audience and men hating women are, but considering we were the only two people in the cinema, they are not turning out for it either. 6 Underground (which I watched yesterday) was bad, but in an entertaining way, and I had fun with iy! This is so bad it is in my top 10 worst movies of the year.
