Comparatively, I felt Frozen 2 was a hundred times better than the first. The imagery, the music, the story, all blew me away. From "Into the Unknown" to "Show Yourself, all the songs are full of emotion. It was funny, sad, heartwarming, and my girls have been acting it out since they went to see it.

Elsa (Menzel) hears a call to adventure which threatens the existence of her kingdom. Hearing this she follows it to an enchanted forest accompanied by Anna (Bell) and Kristoff (Groff) the latter of whom is trying to propose to the former.

The premise of the movie is based on Else trying to figure out where her powers came from and the mythology of the Frozen Universe. In the first movie it is just said that she was born with her powers and I was fine with that explanation, I was not sure if I needed an entire movie to overcomplicate the mythos. And after watching it, I can say that this is a fun hour and a half movie that is visually stunning and emotionally resonating. One that you will be in awe of experiencing and then forget almost entirely after watching it. What made the first Frozen so celebrated was its subvertions from the typical princess storylines that disney has offered up until then. This new movie offers some really good world building, all in service to a story that is pretty formulaic. There really are no themes in the movie that could be translated into morals for our protagonists, and therefore it does not appear that the movie even had something profound to say, or really anything to say at all. And normally this wouldn't be a problem, however this movie does take itself way too seriously most of the time. The first trailer dropped and we got this beautiful shot and synchronized introduction of what's to come for our heroes, and then the second trailer was released and it still had this serious vibe as well as having some silly moments. The first movie had something to say, maybe not about the world, or something really profound, but it had a good story to tell, this movie could have worked it didn't take itself so seriously. Most of the humour surprisingly worked; Olaf has not worn out his welcome yet, which I was relieved to see, and Kristoff and Sven bouncing off each other comedically worked about half of the time, however this humour is in service to a completely pointless subplot. The Kristoff proposing to Anna subplot went nowhere really fast and it took up a sizeable portion of the movie; mainly consisting of Anna misinterpreting Kristoff's intentions due to her naiveté. This was easily the worst storyline, the other ones are just predictable. Elsa's quest and the feud between the enchanted forest follow the typical call to adventure archetype and the love storyline set up by the first Frozen. So there really were no surprises. At least I can say the movie constantly kept me entertained. The new songs were enjoyable, even if there was no song quite as good as Let it Go and others were trying to replicate the magic of the first movie. You don't have to watch the two movies back-to-back to see the similarities and see which song is trying to replicate which story beat. And as someone who loved the first movie I appreciated this movie trying to recapture that magic. So in the end, it is a completely serviceable movie, not terrible or amazing. One that just feels like a hollow shell of the previous installment.

I feel like the main message of the Frozen 2 movie is that a love is the solution for sadness. I'm not surprised because talking to people, getting love and hug really heals sadnes.
