Private schools in Pakistan's troubled north-western Swat district have been ordered to close in a Taleban edict banning girls' education. Militants seeking to impose their austere interpretation of Sharia law have destroyed about 150 schools in the past year. Five more were blown up despite a government pledge to safeguard education, it was reported on Monday. The principal did not inform us about the reason behind not announcing the school reopening, but my guess was that the Taleban had announced a ban on girls' education from 15 January. This time round, the girls were not too excited about vacations because they knew if the Taleban implemented their edict they would not be able to come to school again. Some girls were optimistic that the schools would reopen in February but others said that their parents had decided to shift from Swat and go to other cities for the sake of their education. Since today was the last day of our school, we decided to play in the playground a bit longer. I am of the view that the school will one day reopen but while leaving I looked at the building as if I would not come here again. FRIDAY 9 JANUARY: THE MAULANA GOES ON LEAVE? Today at school I told my friends about my trip to Bunair. They said that they were sick and tired of hearing the Bunair story. We discussed the rumours about the death of Maulana Shah Dauran, who used to give speeches on FM radio. He was the one who announced the ban on girls attending school. Some girls said that he was dead but others disagreed. The rumours of his death are circulating because he did not deliver a speech the night before on FM radio. One girl said that he had gone on leave. Since there was no tuition on Friday, I played the whole afternoon. I switched on the TV in the evening and heard about the blasts in Lahore. I said to myself 'why do these blasts keep happening in Pakistan? WEDNESDAY 7 JANUARY: NO FIRING OR FEAR I have come to Bunair to spend Muharram (a Muslim holiday) on vacation. I adore Bunair because of its mountains and lush green fields. My Swat is also very beautiful but there is no peace. But in Bunair there is peace and tranquillity. Neither is there any firing nor any fear. We all are very happy. Today we went to Pir Baba mausoleum and there were lots of people there. People are here to pray while we are here for an excursion. There are shops selling bangles, ear rings, lockets and other artificial jewellery. I thought of buying something but nothing impressed - my mother bought ear rings and bangles. MONDAY 5 JANUARY: DO NOT WEAR COLOURFUL DRESSES I was getting ready for school and about to wear my uniform when I remembered that our principal had told us not to wear uniforms - and come to school wearing normal clothes instead. Only 11 students attended the class out of 27. The number decreased because of Taleban's edict. My three friends have shifted to Peshawar, Lahore and Rawalpindi with their families after this edict. Directed by Amjad Khan, it also makes an effort to share the heartbreaking conditions of the people in Swat Valley between the years 2007-12. Review: In making since 2012, when Malala Yousafzai was attacked by a masked gunman, the biopic Gul Makai is a little late to the theatres. In time, where makers have figured out a formula for biopics, Gul Makai finds it harder to set a tone. With a capable cast, we get a story that is worth listening. The film starts at the end, as the scenes takes us to the event which was largely covered by media all over the world. We see a man walking towards the Kushal School's bus, climbs in and asks, Who is Malala. within seconds the screen blacks out and we hear several gunshots being fired. The film then takes us back to 2007 when the Taliban first started taking control over regions of North-Western Pakistan. The militants took over little villages one by one, and within a few months managed to take over the entire Swat valley, to make it their operation base. We also get to see several other aspects of the terrorist attacks. The film is from the viewpoint of someone living in the Swat Valley, instead of just Malala. We see one journalist trying to cover the real truth, Pakistani army trying to exterminate the terrorist groups, politicians and government trying to cover up the extent of threat, and the people who are actually suffering as Taliban takes over their land, and their lives. The focus of the film isn't just Malala's story but the situation around her that inspired her to speak up. Malala knew nothing about the world outside of her school, she was happy with her family and the books that she couldn't part from. But her world changed when the Taliban forced a ban on Girls education. As a well-read child, Malala knew of her rights and believed in pursuing them for all the other girls in Swat valley, who were also deprived of their fundamental right to education. In several scenes, Malala takes the stand publicly without fear of militants who are ready to gun down anyone who opposes them. She was also known to have blogged about her life in Swat Valley under the rule of Taliban, with a pseudo name, Gul Makai, for BBC Urdu. Director Amjad Khan had good intentions of bringing the story to life, but despite being in post-production for years and edited by national award-winning editor, Praveen Angre, Gul Makai is incapable of bringing out the best. Throughout the film, we see the story through a timeline, starting in 2007 and rushing towards the end in 2012. Malala's father Ziauddin Yousafzai, played by Atul Kulkarni deserved the credit for driving the story. Atul plays the role of a father, an activist, as well as a politician to his best effort. However, his performance is brought down by a slow-paced screenplay, wordy dialogues and hard to follow sub-plot. The entire cast, in the film, can be seen speaking in Urdu, which helps with the look and feel of the story. It also helps you feel closer to the characters, including Malala's mother played by Divya Dutta. The film eventually turns into a potboiler as the story often diverts to chasing the terrorist group and their agenda. If focused on Malala's story it would have created a stronger impact. During the end credits, the film showcases a speech given by the real Malala during her visit to the UN later in life. The speech truly shows her burning desire for change and drives the film towards the end. Overall, Gul Makai is also a war film that gives a bit of an insight into what truly happened in Swat Valley between the years 2007 to 2012. STORY: ‘Gul Makai chronicles the life and struggles of Pakistani Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, leading up to her notorious shooting in the hands of Taliban on October 9, 2012. REVIEW: Born in a small hamlet named Mingora, near the beautiful Swat valley of Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai (Reem Shaikh) has been academically inclined from a tender age. But, despite her father Ziauddin Yousafzais (Atul Kulkarni) unwavering faith in her and his community, their world comes crumbling down when the anti-education extremist group, Taliban, hijacks their otherwise peaceful valley and puts an indefinite ban on education for the girl child. The mood of ‘Gul Makai is focused on the brutality that the local town-dwellers were subjected to during the Taliban occupation of Swat. Its tonality emphasises on one little girls unabashed and unquenchable thirst to acquire knowledge ? not just for her own sake, but for every other girl child around her. True, the subject of this biographical piece is fascinating but, H. E Amjad Khans approach towards the same does not translate onto the big screen. For one, the narrative is messy from the word go and although Khan tries to juxtaposition Malalas inner turmoil with the war waged by the Talibans, he ends up concocting a story that is half-baked, and riddled with glaring flaws and discrepancies. And, barring seasoned actors Atul Kulkarni and Divya Dutta, the star cast (including the protagonist) has failed to deliver believable performances. In fact, Reems version of Malala neither renders a cathartic experience for its viewers, nor does it evoke any sense of real emotions. Also, the background score is a replica of the 80s war films in a not-so-flattering way and the haphazard writing goes on for 132 minutes, making ‘Gul Makai a tedious watch. It is quite disappointing that the film does not mention any of the controversies Malala has courted along the way, which is hard to overlook given the fact that the film is biographical in nature. ‘Gul Makai could have been a very strong story, but the initial spark fizzles out when translated on screen; the takeaway here is close to nothing.
