Η ουρανια σκληρη γυναίκα κάποτε την συμπαθουσα αλλες φορες οχι στον θάνατο του Αντώνη ομως ηταν συγκινητική. Ο Γιώργης και ο Βαγγέλης πολύ άδικο. Y.Γ εκεί θα φανεί η αγάπη του ελέους και του ελαίους. Thank you, TCM. This was the perfect movie for the holiday season. I really looked forward to Judy singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." She wore a beautiful, stunning red velvet dress (the pattern was similar to my own wedding gown which I made, only in cream satin) and little Tootie was so sweet playing with the monkey (I think) musical toy. The song is always repairing whatever is wrong with our hearts or our lives at the time, and tears come even more. every time I hear her sing this. I was also looking forward to the angst-ridding maneuver of Tootie batting the snow-persons our of their misery; getting rid of her bottled up anger. Rose is so sweet; trying to be so sophisticated. Too bad they tried to get girls married off too young in those days. Nowdays, young women go to college, and marriage is way off in the distant future.

The cakewalk song had racist connotations, as if the lovers in the song were going to cohabitate under the bamboo tree or were they really going to get married with the benefit of clergy according to the mores of early 20th century America? The lovers were "of dusky shade" which seemed to connote supposed moral superiority on the part of the singers of the song or at least the lyricist. That time period reminds one of minstrelsy, another post-Civil War (late 19th and early 20th centuries) white people's parody of African-American culture. "I like-a-you and you like-a-me. I'm gonna change your na-a-ame." The lovers were of royal blood. Wouldn't the lyricist have them speak in better English? No. It was fashionable at the time to have black people and Native Americans depicted as less intelligent than "those white folks. Tootie talking about her dead dolls was so disturbing. Some were even buried in the ground. Her Halloween scenes were quite unusual too, what with the neighborhood kids divvying up who was gonna scare and "kill" which grownups. Their costumes were strange, too, as I noticed the boys dressed as women, and the girls dressed as male hobos and bums. I think Margaret O'Brien was around eight years old in this movie, but the character was five years old. Margaret was too big and too intelligent to be age five here. That part was not convincing. LOL. The family is all musical. Lon is so nice to the girls. As usual, Marjorie Main is wonderful in the part of the maid-cook-whatever. She and Mrs. Smith organizing the ketchup-making scene is such a hoot, and of course Grandpa has to have his authoritative taste-test. The Dad is a pushover deep down, pretending to give the family what they don't want (I would want it, though. the move to NYC - and yet knowing that their lives are forever interwoven into their old community. Grandpa and John and the tuxedo situation are so cool. The goofy boys dancing with Judy at the ball are so outrageous. the large boy, the small boy and the tall boy who thought the ballroom was a speedway. Of course, they are not the *boy next door. Did I see June Lockhart in this movie? She was stunning. Did I leave anybody out? The girls on the trolley were neat, and I think one was Julie Newmar. Esther and John both pretending to need help turning out the lights in the house was so precious. Ah, we get older, but we always love the nostalgia, and somehow these characters seem younger and younger. even Grandpa. Wish Esther could have gone to college too, and made *the boy next door* wait for her. LOL. I love all the songs, and of course the dancing. Anyone who reads my other reviews knows that.
