So, I used to be a huge Sonic fan back in the Mega Drive days, and I have fond memories of the Dreamcast games, although they've aged pretty badly. I drifted away from the 3D games after Sonic 06 set a new low bar for gaming in general, and I didn't really pay much attention after that (although I did enjoy the 3D stages of Generations a few times). For the record, I absolutely adore Sonic Mania and think it's up there with Sonic 3 & Knuckles as one of the best Sonic games ever made. If you don't have it, get it. It's good. It's been a running gag between me and my girlfriend that I would buy Sonic Forces if I ever saw it for less than £10. We made a game of looking at sales over the last couple of years, with the lowest being £10. 49 last year. Just 50p too expensive! But yesterday, it was released as a PS+ game, free of charge (aside from my annual PS+ subscription, obviously). So, I downloaded it, cracked open a beer, and dove in late last night. Just over three hours later, after finishing the main game and the Episode Shadow DLC, I uninstalled it in disgust, finished my last beer, and went to bed in a bad mood. In my opinion, this game is a failure in every conceivable way. It is an unfinished, rushed, lazy cash grab that shows that SEGA not only refuse to learn from their past mistakes, but have actually doubled down on them, while making exciting new ones. Let's break it down into bite-sized pieces: Story: Story has never been important in these kinds of games, but even so, this is a piss-poor effort. The cutscenes are blatantly unfinished, fading out seemingly at random to be replaced by text on a black screen that sums up the rest. I had to laugh at a scene of Sonic being beat up by the new villain, which then suddenly cut to text telling me that he died and that Eggman took over 99. 99% of the world and that Knuckles became the leader of a resistance force. Would have been nice to see, like, any of that! What was the budget for this game, again? (He's then revealed to be alive in the menu dialogue around 90 seconds later. Phew! What a roller-coaster! ) Throughout the game, most of the story is told through talking heads on the menu screen. It tries to portray a dystopian world where Eggman rules everything and there's a huge resistance taking heavy losses in battle, where Tails has lost his mind and Sonic has been tortured in prison for six months, where you're destroying factories and power sources to help the war effort, gradually reclaiming territory, but nothing in the actual animated cutscenes or gameplay supports any of it. The writing is fanfic-level. Actually, I used to write Sonic fanfics and they were better than this. The bad guy, Infinite, is yet another sneering edgelord who just shows up out of nowhere, whose powers change depending on which scene he's in. The voice actor has fun with him, but there's just nothing to like or remember about this guy. He may as well have been Coldsteel the Hedgeheg, considering that the game references internet memes elsewhere. He's just Shadow again, without the backstory, complete with ill-defined gem-powered time-space powers. All of the extended Sonic cast are just sort of there. None of them are introduced, none of them do anything, none of them have a single defining moment. They're just there because why not. Same goes for "classic Sonic", who just shows up because people liked Generations. Even Eggman is just sort of thrown in there, only appearing in a handful of scenes to throw out a handful of cliché mad scientist lines and then leave again. He barely interacts with the rest of the cast at all. Evil holographic clones of the old villains - Shadow, Chaos, Metal Sonic, some guy called Zavok with a horrible character design, I believe from a Wii U game - are trotted out as cameos, with only two of them being fought as bosses. The others are just KO'd in one punch in cutscenes by other characters. What was even the point? Apparently, there are infinite numbers of them and they're just as dangerous as the originals, but again, it's just dialogue: nothing in the cutscenes or gameplay bears this out. And then there's the avatar. The OC. I know the audience they were going for here, and it's a canny idea, but like everything else, there's just no effort put into it. The attempt to give the OC a personal history and rivalry with Infinite is literally seconds-long, and his/her scenes as Sonic's new best friend are equally short and soulless. They did the absolute bare minimum here, and I'd be amazed if even the most diehard DeviantArt fan artist was actually won over. I could say more about the story - about the total lack of a consistent tone, or even basic logic or continuity between scenes - but then I'd be putting more thought into it than Sonic Team ever did, so I'll just leave it there and move on. Graphics: The character models are a bit plasticky and lifeless, and look weird when they talk out of the sides of their mouths, but they're fine. In-stage graphics are quite bland and muddy, with overly busy backgrounds that sometimes make it hard to judge a jump or see enemies. Otherwise, the graphics are serviceable, but nothing remarkable. Sound: None of the music stands out in my memory, aside from the tuneless Casio keyboard drone of the classic Sonic levels. The chilled-out OC music might be okay, but the levels are too short to really notice. Infinite's theme is at least hilarious in its early-2000s edgelord earnestness. The voice actors are as well-suited to their characters as ever, but they can't do much for the trite first-draft dialogue they're forced to spew. Gameplay: All of the above could be forgiven if the game was actually fun to play, but this is where Forces makes the most mistakes. The core gameplay just feels bad. It feels really bad. Momentum and physics essentially don't exist; Sonic slides around on the floor, accelerating and stopping in fits and starts when he hits invisible triggers, barely accepting (or even requiring) input from the player most of the time. Characters control like rocks in the air, a far cry from the skill-based jumping of the older 2D games (or their recent tribute, Sonic Mania). Level design is extremely simple, with stages being short and filled with copy-pasted hazards, such as rings of enemies for the OC to blast with their weapon. Alternate routes do exist, but seem to just be two flat paths stacked on top of each other, with no real complexity to them. Later levels employ far too many sudden bottomless pits as hazards, making some sections a joyless battle against the sluggish controls and bowling ball physics to make jumps. Enemies just stand in place and wait to be killed. Reminded me of the first Sonic Advance, in a bad way. Most Sonic levels can be beaten by just holding down the Boost button, occasionally jumping over a hazard or shifting lanes with the shoulder buttons. This is a criticism levelled at every Sonic game ever, but this game doesn't try to alleviate it. There's one level that's set up as a big deal, where Sonic and the OC are banished into a black hole, but you literally just mash Square and they escape in a cutscene. There's no real incentive to even get better at the levels, as most of my first-time attempts got me an S-Rank and a subsequent showering of ugly new accessories for my OC. Boss fights are a mixed bag. A couple are okay, although uninspired, as you dodge slow-moving attacks and use the homing attack to wear the boss down. The fights where you constantly run forward and need to build up enough Boost to catch the boss get tiresome quickly, again not helped by the controls, physics and muddy graphics. The free DLC added 10 minutes to the running time and a single cutscene, all of which recycled things from the main campaign, although it did give a hilariously brief but memorable "origin story" to the villain that's worth YouTubing just for the narm. I didn't bother with the Super Sonic DLC. Overall: There's not much more I can say. In my opinion, Sonic Forces is a cynical cash-grab of a game, an almost impressive commitment to doing the least amount of work possible to rush a game into stores and fill a two-minute trailer with things that would excite fans. It falls short at every single thing it attempts, if it even bothers to attempt them. Level design and overall game design continue to slide ever downward, not that SEGA give a damn. They know the fans and the kids will buy it anyway. If I had spent any money on this at all, I would have been pissed off. As it was, I'm still annoyed that it wasted my night. There isn't a single reason I could recommend this to anyone, for any reason. If you want to play a Sonic game on a modern console, get Sonic Mania Plus. It's better in every way: graphics, music, level design, challenge, length, personality, and love for the franchise and the character. PS: For the record, my OC, Jo the Hedgehog, was a brown female hedgehog with a head like a conker and wide PTSD eyes with cataracts. She wore a white medical mask, because even Sonic's world of Not-Mobius needs to take measures against the coronavirus. Yet another all mighty flop by Kirsten Stewart, she was completely wrong for the part and spends the entire film making stupid faces and putting in a one dimensional performance... how many times is Hollywood going to cast her in a film way beyond her ability, even Charlie's angels was utter rubbish and that's about her level. Get a proper actress for a film like this... On the first few seconds, i knew it straight away its gonna a lesbian movie. As a viewer who is very familiar with the work of Jean Seberg I simply can't accept Kristen in that role. She simply doesn't measure up to the character she is trying to play. She probably did well in the Twilight movies because she really has "dead eyes. Seberg was vibrant and alive in all of her roles, a talent Kristen has yet to develop.
