Previous Wiki Next Chapter 9: Run, Fight, or Die Morgan Mackenzie was running for her life, with a warbling scrubby giving panic-filled trills while desperately hanging on to her shoulder with whatever loofah magic that Lulu used. When the first giant wolf had appeared at the far edge of the meadow, she had felt confident in her abilities to defend herself with her magic. But [Naked Instinct] had simply kept ratcheting up in its intensity, and when [The Naked Eye] had revealed at least a dozen more wolves closing in through the trees her confidence had drained away like the last swirling dregs of dishwater flowing down the sink. Nervousness became naked fear as a dozen became two dozen became three. Thankfully [Naked Instinct] was more useful than a simple feeling as she had found herself rolling to the side without thinking, just as Lulu had given a warbling warning right in her ear. The wolf that had managed to sneak up behind her had missed its lunging attack, but its near-silent passing over her was equally disturbing. As Morgan rolled back to her feet she had tossed a sizzling bolt of lightning at the creature, but it had simply twisted in mid-air with a snarl, avoiding the charged projectile without so much as singeing its fur as it landed with a roll through the dirt. The girl had immediately turned to run, only to find the entire meadow surrounded. The lone attacking wolf was merely the vanguard before the rest of the pack closed in. [Spell Surge], followed by her tossing several [Flame Bolt] spells, resulted in new craters and one side of the encirclement scattering. Morgan had wasted no time sprinting for the opening, and that was how she found herself dashing madly through the forest with howling death nipping at her heels. The damaging backlash she had suffered from using [Spell Surge] with the fire magic had left her hands once again blistered and cracked. She did not even consider slowing down, however. The pain was tolerable thanks to her [Pain Resistance] and the damage was fairly superficial thanks to her affinities for Heat and Fire and the associated resistances. Her boosted physical capability both from her spent stat points and the skill [Naked Athleticism] were paying dividends with interest now. Similar to when she had climbed down from the giant tree, the skill helped her instinctively make the most efficient movements as she ran, and her increased strength meant her strides practically launched her with each step, while her agility helped her keep her balance with the impact of every footfall. Morgan had never imagined being able to run like this, and would have been amazed at her speed if not for the sheer terror driving her heart to pound like a jackhammer. Any possible thoughts of slowing down were immediately curtailed by the moonlit shapes keeping pace with her through the woods in the distance to either side. As fast as she had been running, the wolves were easily keeping pace, almost as if they were toying with her. They had closed in a few times, and she had responded with bursts of lightning and flame and terrible accuracy since she could not spare the attention to aim. The oversized canines simply melted back into the trees unscathed, howls mocking her every effort at retaliation. Morgan ran for hours. She had no idea how many miles she had covered. Probably somewhere between a whole bunch of miles and a heck of a lot, she thought to herself, having no breath to spare to speak out loud. As night had fallen sometime around the beginning of her running, the moons had soon risen somewhere to her right. With no frame of reference for the greater surrounding region as a whole, she figured north was as good a direction as any. Between the moonlight and [The Naked Eye] she could see better in the pale night than she had been able to during the day before she gained the skill. Back on Earth, a run like this would have killed me all by itself, she thought with mixed emotions. It was almost surreal that she could even think in a situation like this, but her options were simple and required little thought to process. Either run, fight, or die. Twice she had tried to slow down to make a stand with her back to a large tree or earth abutment, and twice the wolves simply melted away from the reach of her spells, panting like laughter as if she were merely a game to them. With fighting proven useless, her choices were reduced to running or death. Morgan had found she could spend Stamina like extra effort in short bursts. She had leapt over fallen trees and jumped over a small stream with the enhanced exertion, resulting in feats that would make olympic medalists on Earth feel inadequate. Her stamina could not recover under the strain of her fear-driven flight, however. When she let herself slow enough that it began to restore itself, there was always a wolf or two right on her heels, nipping at her backside as Lulu’s warning warbles rose to a piercing pitch. This is an endurance race, she realized with sudden dawning clarity. Every big jump or dash brings my Stamina lower, she thought, and they won’t let me slow down enough to get it back. That realization almost brought her to the brink of despair. With their numbers and the ease with which they kept pace with her it was only a matter of time until her stamina was low enough that her body would begin to devour itself to keep her going. Simply running, even at her impressive pace, was no terrible burden on her reserves thanks to her improved stat attributes. She could tell through her healing skill’s senses that Stamina aside, she would run into sleep deprivation problems before her caloric reserves became an issue, going by how efficiently her body seemed to presently be operating. Stamina was simply her ultimate problem. Every bite at her flanks and bare bottom, when the wolves rushed her or she slowed her pace, required healing at least enough to stop the bleeding. Vaulting streams or other obstacles and the healings each cost her a small portion of stamina, and running at her current pace took enough of it to keep her from regenerating it, even with her high Vitality stat. Mana, on the other hand, she had plenty of. There has to be a way to use Mana instead of Stamina to go faster! Her thoughts were frantic; she could not exactly stop to experiment or look for a solution. But I have to try something now while I have the Stamina to recover if it doesn’t work, she scolded herself. After running so long, she was getting familiar with how her body used up Stamina when she burned it to speed up or jump higher or dodge the snarling fangs. If I can just use Mana instead of Stamina, but I have no idea which Element… At Lulu’s sudden trill of warning that her pursuers were once again closing in, Morgan seized her Mana without attempting to filter out the Elements she had already become familiar with. I’ll just have to throw it all in and hope something sticks, she thought. She pushed off with her legs in the same way she had used Stamina to jump before, hoping to at least lunge ahead of snapping jaws, but willed her Mana into the jump instead. She had hoped to gain a few dozen paces in a burst of speed. The result she actually got was a burst of Mana running wild as the ground underneath her exploded under the pressure of her foot’s impact. Startled yelps and snarls she barely noticed behind her, as she was launched several dozen Morgan-lengths ahead at a truly frightening speed. She would have considered it a resounding success except for the fact that her left knee had shattered under the shock, and she was not only flying through the air but also tumbling while a terrified Lulu emitted purbling whimpers right in her ear. Morgan hit the ground in a flopping roll, only her [Pain Resistance] skill keeping her conscious. She could see with her recovery skill that the bones in her knee joint had compressed together with such force that the crystalline marrow core had fractured, then splintered against each other and practically exploded inside her knee. The marrow-crystals burned with mana and were quickly dissolving back into her blood as [Naked Recovery] regrew then re-aligned the joint almost before she hit the ground, but even with her resistance the pain was enough to have her screaming. She was worried she might have spent too much Stamina to heal it so quickly, but it was necessary if she were to remain able to run. She scrambled to her feet, still limping but quickly recovering. Lulu had come loose from her shoulder when she landed and she dashed franticly over to the scrubby and picked it up, sticking the loofah back on her shoulder as she looked around for the wolves. She could see many in the distance running between the trees, and the two who had harried her were both over a hundred yards away, shaking the mud and dirt off their tawny brown fur. They were standing in the middle of a splattered sprawl of earth and brushy detritus that had been kicked up by Morgan’s sudden launch, and it was only the sudden shock of it that had bought the girl a moment’s respite She had rolled partway up a low rounded hillside, and she put her back to the mounded earth as the pair of wolves closed in. Every moment not running was a few more points of Stamina regenerated, but that wasn’t the only reason she stopped. The rest of the pack had been left farther behind the two vanguards, and Morgan was not about to miss a chance at some payback. Especially not when her Mana was literally brimming over, the channeled recovery skill having topped her off. As the wolves spread apart to attack her from both sides, she planted her feet and timed their simultaneous lunge as much by instinct as by sight. [Spell Surge] caused violet arcs of wild power to snap at the air around her as she pulled on every b

My friends and I, Carly and Ashton, had been walking their dog, Preston, when Lungdrinker stumbled out in front of us. It was about six in the evening, and the Sun and Moon had begun to switch shifts for the night. We were all on our return to their house, where I was going to spend the night to play video games and MTG. And, if I were lucky, get Carly to agree to date me. Lungdrinker crossed our path, initially not heeding us. Had it just been us, without Preston, I’m sure the terror of the night would’ve been avoided. But Preston saw the stranger, and as is his wont, immediately started barking. Lungdrinker, in the shape of a naked old man with sagging skin, stopped in place. A head draped with gray and unwashed hair twitched, then turned; casting its gaze towards us. Carly, the oldest of us and yet the most easily frightened, shrieked at the sight, while Ashton just swore. I said nothing, too surprised to even utter some expletive or emotional outburst. Preston barked again, and Lungdrinker?in a shape unbefitting his physical capabilities?sprinted towards us. Carly, useless, stood petrified, but Ashton went forward to challenge the approaching man-who-is-not-a-man. Lungdrinker swatted Ashton aside, sending him crashing into?and cratering upon impact?a massive tree nearby. In the next second Lungdrinker was right in front of Carly and I, but rather than slay either of us, he grabbed Preston and held him in the air. Preston barked, then yipped, then squealed, as Lungdrinker compressed the dog’s body in his hand until it resembled a fur-covered dumbbell. You could hear the air exit the poor dog’s body; a terrible wheezing accompanying the deflation. Lungdrinker breathed in the escaping air and whatever other essence of life exists within canine companions. Once done, he tossed the dead dog aside. Lungdrinker’s body changed, then. The skin grew taught, muscles emerged or finally became visible, and his eyes?which had been nothing but black pits before?took on the missing whiteness. The hair kept its length, but darkened; the white dyed to thick sable strands. He resembled some powerful, long-haired proto-human. Carly’s screams?which were horrible during Preston’s death?escalated at the sight of this morphing, and became essentially white noise. I shook myself out of immobility and?thinking of nothing better to do?swung with all my strength at the fiend, who was so absorbed in finishing his transformation that he looked totally unaware of our presences. I was, of course, wrong, and my first was caught effortlessly by his hand. He crushed my fist, instantly, then delivered a debilitating strike to my ribs. I fell, and before I could think to clutch my crushed hand or cracked ribs, another blow sent me to the ground. I hadn’t felt that one, but I did see his leg withdrawing, and felt a warm trickle of blood fall down my face from the side of my head. My vision briefly lapsed, a full second of black interjecting the stream of sight. The true agony of that kick would be felt in its full intensity later, during my recovery. From my side-lain position on the ground, I viewed the next events from a lopsided perspective. I saw Lungdrinker approach the still-screaming Carly, and seize her by the throat with both hands. He lifted her a few feet from the ground so that her chest was level with his mouth, tore away the layers of flesh and bone, and began sucking the air from her lungs. He again siphoned whatever greater essence exists within the bodies of normal, terrestrial creatures. Carly’s flesh sagged and sank inward as he fed, and her screams ceased; replaced by a soundless gasping. Her anguished eyes met mine, plead with me to help her. I could do nothing but lie there as the life left the eyes of the girl I loved. He tossed the skin aside, and turned back to me. I was still on the ground, and in absolutely no position to put up a fight. As he walked, his body transformed again, although this time the change was much more monstrous. His skin hardened, darkened, and the muscles expanded to inhuman proportions. His hair fell out, and antler-like protrusions broke through the flesh of his scalp; forked and twisted like the branches of a time-warped tree. The whites of his eyes turned red, and his face split at the center to reveal a hideous gash in which worms or some other hellish pest writhed about. His fingers on each hand merged so as to form three demonic talons, and all about him radiated a heat; as if emitted by some internalized fire. I laughed, howled nonsensically and stupidly; because I was about to be murdered by some demon we happened upon while walking through the woods. The fiend stopped just before my broken and battered body, then knelt down. The heat charred my clothing and singed my arm, and flash-dried the tears?that had fallen from my eyes. The fiend studied me for a while, smirking at my mounting discomfort, then stood again. I have been fed all that I require, and need not the air in your lungs, nor the spirit of your body. You will be spared?assuming you recover from your wounds. If you wish to seek me out, in your tongue I am known as Lungdrinker. Now that you have seen me as I truly am, you need only utter my name, and I will come to relieve you of your breath. His horrible, not-right and worm-infested smile sparked a heat in my chest; but for all my rage I could not even stand. Undeniably beaten, I watched as that demonian bastard walked away into the orange-tinted woods; leaving me barely alive and my friend and her dog dead. As for Ashton, I had thought he’d been killed as well, but a weak and hoarse voice called out to me before I fainted. I returned the call, and asked about his condition. Turning my head was not something I could manage, so I had to mentally assess his wounds from my ground-lain position. He told me that he thought a few of his ribs were broken, and maybe his collarbone, and that there was blood everywhere. I felt like shit myself, but he sounded worse. I asked if he could reach his phone, and he responded that it had been broken when he collided with the tree. I calmed him down, and in an agony so intense as to be impossible to put into words, withdrew my phone from my pocket and dialed 911. I tried to remain conscious until we were at least in an ambulance, but the sound of the approaching sirens was apparently enough assurance of salvation for my battered brain. Days later, after being treated, bandaged, medicated, and exhaustively questioned by detectives as to the nature of our friend’s killing?we told them some crazed drug addicts had committed the atrocities?Ashton and I both had lost our resolve to invoke and challenge Lungdrinker. We were weak, mortal men, who even when at our physical best posed no threat to the infernal creature. Ashton suffered the most, afterward; torn between his desire of revenge, and his understandable fear at facing the horror again. He healed faster than I did?was up and walking without assistance only a few days after the attack; whereas I can barely stand without collapsing from the pain that my medication fails to mitigate. We live together now, and at pretty much any time of day his lamentations can be heard. He and Carly weren’t just siblings, they were best friends. If while walking you come across a sickly old man, or someone who just seems out of place for the environment, turn away; even if you feel like you can handle yourself. I was spared, only because it was full, after drinking the air and spirit of my friend and her dog. I loved her, wanted to someday be with her, but neither myself nor her brother could protect her from that Hell-spawned thing. So please, if you come across Lungdrinker, run as fast as you can. Don’t try to fight it. Don’t let it drink you.

His skull had a calcium deposit growing internally, and it was digging into an area of his brain that controlled certain pain receptors. Since he was 16, Charlie would drift to sleep and immediately fall into a paralysis that would last until morning. Due to the calcium deposit, his dreams (which had only been nightmares since he was 16) would give him physical, unending, intolerable pain. Even when he’d awaken from the nightmare, he would still feel the physical pain of whatever ailed him in his sleep, and the misery would last until the paralysis wore off at sunrise. Many doctors, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons, and every other type of holistic witch had tried to help Charlie, but grew bored when they couldn’t immediately help him, and would stop returning his calls. Eventually all of the people who tried to help would move their practices out of state, so Charlie couldn’t show up unexpectedly for help. The deposit was impossible to remove, and there was no way to stop the physical sensations. Since that fateful year when the deposit had grown large enough to scratch the surface of his brain, Charlie had only dreamt one nightmare, and it was taking a toll on his life. The nightmare took place in his room, during the night, and he’d watch the door, trembling while hiding under the covers. His vision would zoom in towards the door, and he’d hear hideous howling laughter just beyond the wooden barrier. Then the pounding would begin, along with screams of joyous hatred, until the frame would splinter and the door would fall. Foaming hyenas, eyes bulged and blood red with hunger, would dart into the room at full speed, slipping and slamming into Charlie’s things as they came at him teeth sharp and mouth’s wide. He was also paralyzed in the dream, unable to do anything but watch and feel the fear and pain of the situation. Once they hyenas reached his bed, the sick howling laughter would be unbearable, Charlie’s entire body tense with terror. They would dive at him and start feasting on him, each bite vigorously and greedily taken. The agony was nearly enough to kill him in his sleep. He felt each tooth sink in, the skin rip, the organs below being shredded… All the while the hyenas were crying with joy at his suffering as they feasted on his living corpse. Charlie would wake up in a freezing sweat, but little did it matter, he never knew if the dream was beginning again until he could hear the vicious howls. He could still feel the pain from the nightmare, as if he was freshly chewed and shredded, feeling the burning pain of the carnage throughout the night until the sun would rise and bring dismal relief. Morning would come, Charlie would stare at the ceiling, phantom pains slowly fading, but eyes and mind truly crisped from the sheer hellishness of the situation. After one of these long nights, Charlie decided he couldn’t handle another one. He called up Heather and asked if she could meet him for dinner later that evening; his treat. She had always known how to calm him down and lend perspective, and he really needed that right now. Heather agreed and suggested one of their old haunts, The Sopping Hog, a classic bbq joint they’d worked at together as teenagers. … “I’m just devastated for you, Charlie. I can’t believe you are still suffering through this every night, ” said Heather as she reached for her lemonade. It almost slipped out her hand due the high amounts of condensation on the glass. Delmer, the same owner who hired them 25 years ago, loved chilling the glasses before serving them to customers. Charlie poked his corn on the cob at the salt shaker, careful not to tip it but absentmindedly trying to avoid thinking of the nightmare. “You know-” “Everything okay here, young bucks? ” Delmer slapped Charlie hard on the back, it was a sign of affection but it nearly killed Charlie. “Look alive, Chuck! ” Delmer laughed and was already on his way to the next table. Heather looked at Charlie with a tilted head and wry grin. “He’s just showing love the only way he knows how, don’t be upset. ” Charlie looked into Heathers eyes and slowly his contorted face turned into a soft smile. It was rare these days, but there were a few things that could bring him warmth. “You’re so kind, Heather. Thanks again for letting me vent. I’m just not sure how much longer I can put up with this. The howling… I’m starting to hear it during the day. ” Heather tilted her head, and looked genuinely heartbroken for him. She put her hand on his and affectionately squeezed, two tears simultaneously falling from her eyes. This was almost as hard for her as it was for Charlie, she cared for him dearly and had suggested so many fixes over the years, yet nothing brought peaceful sleep. It was a very disheartening situation. “Wait. Charlie... ” Heather said in a loud whisper. Her face had completely changed. It was something Charlie hadn’t seen from her in a very long time… Hope. “Heather? ” “I was listening to a podcast last week. There was this guy… Listen, I know we’ve tried a lot, but this might actually make a dent, a dent! For the first time in years! I could scream… Charlie! ” Heather was beaming. For the first time since his mid-30s, Charlie felt a twinge of hope. … Today was the day, Charlie was finally going to confront his fears. After two weeks of meditating in the evenings with Heather, reading a few books, and taking nootropics (an experimental brain enhancement system that Doctor Cruff had developed), Heather had decided he was ready to face the nightmare head on. Through the many years of nightmares, Charlie had developed a crippling fear of hyenas. The site, sound, thought, smell… Anything related to hyenas would send Charlie spiraling, hackles raised, hair graying, and purple rings under his eyes. Heather thought the best option would be to physically face the hyenas head on, and a trip to the zoo was her bright idea to end the nightmare. Dr. Cruff explained on the podcast that facing your fears could rewire your brain chemistry, even to the point where it brings healing. Things that seemed impossible were possible, according to the good doctor. If Heather believed him, Charlie figured that he could trust the method and give it a shot. He took a deep breath, unbuckled his seatbelt, and got out of the car. “I’m so proud of you, Charlie. I know how hard this is. Thank you so much for giving this a shot, I just know we are going to beat this. And of course, I’ll buy you a penguin pretzel, ” Heather said, smiling ear to ear, a single tear of joy running down her cheek. She wrapped her arms around Charlie and hugged him very tightly, resting her head in his chest. “You’ve got this, Chuck. ” Charlie looked down, kissed the top of her head, and rested his lips there, smiling and feeling better than he had in years. Then he opened his eyes and slowly brought them to the zoo, a large bead of sweat forming on his brow. … The hyenas went about their business and inspected rocks, yipped at each other, and ran around the pen. It was a very average day in terms of hyena. The man brought the food, they ate the food, and they played. Something changed, though. New thoughts developed in their heads. They all looked towards the entrance of the zoo in unison, mouths gaping and tongues loosely flopped out. They sensed the strongest, purest fear they’d ever felt. Flashes of a man went through their heads, thousands of years of evolution streaming into their minds. It was Charlie they were seeing. And never had a beast of the Earth felt such a hunger. … As soon as Charlie had crossed the threshold of the zoo, a deep dread settled over him, enough to make him projectile vomit into a planter when Heather was busy asking a janitor where the hyena cage was. He had never felt anything like this presence of doom, his vision going gray like he was in an old tv show from the 40s. He looked in every direction, no longer having any sense of himself, only the truest purpose of humanity; survival. “This way, Charlie! ” Heather exclaimed, excitedly tugging at his sleeve as she pulled him in the direction of the hyena exhibit. She was too excited to notice that Charlie’s eyes were pouring tears. She pulled him along the path towards the rapidly evolving hyenas.... The hyenas were losing their minds with red hot anger and starvation, tormented with the strong desire to devour Charlie slowly. The hyenas were going through a mental metamorphosis, and quickly became ashamed of their nakedness. They problem solved and easily climbed out of the pen that had held them for so long. One of the hyenas stood on hind legs and began to walk, sparking bipedal thoughts into the minds of the other hyenas as well. Desmond, the hyena had embraced the name his captors had given him, walked towards a tourist in a trench coat. The tourist roared with fear and was about to run, but the hyena was clearly empathetic and intelligent, so he stopped and waited to see what would happen. Because the hyena’s vocal chords weren’t evolving along with the all encompassing aptitude, it couldn’t speak to the tourist, but instead pantomimed with its paws that it wanted to borrow the jacket. The tourist happily lent the obviously friendly and talented hyena his coat. Desmond brought a paw to his brow, and slightly bowed to the tourist. The hyena gang met back up, all wearing borrowed clothing from the generous human beings, and set to laying their trap for the chosen one’s capture. … Charlie was vibrating in fear. He shook, tears still streaming from his eyes, his neck so tense that his muscles could bear the same weight as the Golden Gate bridge. Heather’s voice sounded like deep muffled noises, as if he’d lost his hearing to a nearby explosion. He couldn’t keep going, so he planted his feet
