Little Women. Interesting to note that Alcott herself was an Opium addict who stated outright that the purpose for writing this novel (and its sequels) was purely for they money she'd get out of it. With all of the hype, I was looking forward to (and even expecting) an interesting, lively and entertaining show. Instead, it was quite. tedious. uneven. over-rated. sad to say (or see. The first public screenings of Little Women were filled to capacity, but the distributors and awards-season strategists behind Greta Gerwig s new film were worried nonetheless. The audience was overwhelmingly comprised of women?and the voting memberships of various Hollywood awards ceremonies are obviously not. That trend may account for why the critically beloved adaptation of Louisa May Alcotts classic novel had an underwhelming showing in last weeks awards nominations. The team behind the film hopes to reverse that by the time Oscar nomination voting opens on January 2. “Its a completely unconscious bias. I dont think its anything like a malicious rejection, ” said producer Amy Pascal. Still, she doesnt believe men gave the movie a shot. RSVPs for the first screening in October, as well as many others that Sony Pictures hosted around Los Angeles in recent weeks, were skewed about two to one in favor of women. ”I dont think that [men] came to the screenings in droves, let me put it that way, ” Pascal said. “And Im not sure when they got their [screener] DVDs that they watched them. ” The team behind Little Women was braced for bad news last week when the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes announced their nominations?and it got it. The film, which opens nationally on December 25, received only a dramatic-actress nod for Saoirse Ronan from the Globes, along with an original-score nod for composer Alexandre Desplat. It got nothing at all from SAG. Pascal, the longtime producer and former studio chief at Sony, cited a similar claim made last week by Queen & Slim director Melina Matsoukas, who felt her film, about an African-American couple targeted in a police stop that turns violent, was not given a fair chance by voters. “I think its kind of the same thing. Its a different bias, ” Pascal said. “[Voters think] These kinds of stories are important to me, and these kinds of stories are less important to me. ” Lorenzo Soria, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which gives out the Globes, addressed the lack of women filmmaker nominees with Variety on the day of the nominations. “What happened is that we dont vote by gender. We vote by film and accomplishment, ” he said. Little Women has mattered deeply to generation after generation of women and girls, ever since it was first published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. In the new film, Ronan stars as firebrand Jo, who longs to become a published writer, while Florence Pugh plays sometimes abrasive artist Amy, Emma Watson is steadfast elder sister Meg, and Eliza Scanlen is frail sister Beth, all living in the household overseen by mother Marmee ( Laura Dern) as they await fathers return from the Civil War. Gerwig also wrote the screenplay, framing the story of the March sisters within an original subplot in which Jo tries to persuade a stuffy editor named Mr. Dashwood (played by Tracy Letts) into publishing her debut novel, which tells the story of the family. The real publisher, whose name was Thomas Niles, did say the book was dull until his niece told him that she found it, and she read it, and [asked] exactly what happened to the Little Women? He realized that he had a hit. ” Pascals request to male voters is simple: Just try it. She even advocates for movies from rival studios, saying voters will find that stories told by women that are about women will still resonate with everyone. “I think if you see Queen & Slim, which is an excellent movie, you see Little Women, you see [director Lulu Wang s] The Farewell, you go, Oh, well these are just stories about all of us, ” Pascal said. Letts agrees there are many Mr. Dashwoods around today, but he is less charitable to them than Pascal. “I just dont understand it. Im really flummoxed by it, ” he said. “I mean, Id like to think that there are a lot of other factors for why somebody maybe doesnt want to tune in, because they…I dont know, that theyve seen too many versions of Little Women, it looks too light or too Christmas-y? I dont know what the hell it is. But please tell me its not because its a movie about women. “I just cant believe were still having this fucking discussion where movies by men, and about men, and for men are considered default movies. And womens movies fall into this separate and unequal category, ” he added. “Its absurd. ” Gerwigs film maintains a 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and Wall Street Journal critic Joe Morgenstern ranked it as one of his best of the year, calling it “the film that left me feeling best about life, most warmed by its human spirit. ” After being largely snubbed by the Globes and SAG, the movie had a better weekend, scoring top awards from the Boston Society of Film Critics and the Chicago Film Critics Association. Like his character, Letts hopes women in the lives of male awards voters will motivate them to check out the film before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences casts its nominating ballots. “Isnt that a great moment? ” the actor said of the scene with Dashwoods daughters. “Its so telling that heres a man whos making decisions about the things he thinks women want and will buy. And of course he has no clue. “I mean, Jo was a hero. Shes a hero in literature, ” he said. “Shes a hero in this movie. And her story is a heros journey, the heros journey as concocted by a woman. ” Some unlikely supporters (at least, thats how they describe themselves) have spoken up to add their own voices to the word-of-mouth campaign: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers and 21 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. “Youd never think that the guys who made Spider-Verse or The Lego Movie would gravitate towards something like this, but [ Little Women] is similar to those movies, ” Lord said. “Its a genre of reinvention. Its recontextualizing something that has been around for a minute for a contemporary audience. Its not afraid to be fun and use that in the employ of big, important ideas about the freedom to live the life that you want and the importance of womens voices. ” Both thought that Gerwigs emphasis on Jos effort to write her story would resonate with Academy members, since many of them have have similar stories of struggling to break through. “[She] has taken a contemporary spin on a classic story about family, and what it means to be a good person, and what it means to be a creative person, ” Miller said. “I think for anybody who wants to pursue anything in the creative fields, its very easy to relate to this movie in that way. It seems like a movie about the emotional journey of being a writer. ” Both Lord and Miller, whose Spider-Man film won the Oscar for best animated feature earlier this year, are new members of the Academy. They worked with Pascal on Spider-Verse and made their animated comedy Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs at Sony under her leadership, but otherwise said they were just fans of Gerwig and her 2017 film, Lady Bird, which earned five Oscar nominations, including best picture as well as best director and original screenplay for Gerwig. “This is the most fun and most funny version of Little Women that Ive ever seen. And it also is the most empathetic, ” Miller said. As for why guys might not be prioritizing it on their must-see lists? “Well, its called Little Women, ” he said. “So its in the title, but I dont know. Its a good movie, a really good filmmaker, and the reviews are glowing, and the movies great. So I feel like its just a matter of time before the word of mouth starts spreading. ” Miller said Gerwigs adaptation changed his entire perception of Alcotts story. “I remember just thinking about Little Women as a thing that is cold and dark, about sickness and people being shivering in a hole. And this movie is joyous and full of playfulness and dancing and running around on a beach and happiness, ” he said. “Theres obviously lots of drama in it, but it feels like a much more enjoyable experience than my vague recollections of the previous version. ” There have been many adaptations of the story over the years, but one of the most beloved is the 1994 film directed by Gillian Armstrong, which starred Winona Ryder as Jo, Trini Alvarado as Meg, Claire Danes as Beth, and Kirsten Dunst as young Amy, with Samantha Mathis as the grown-up. The story, set in Massachusetts near the end of the Civil War, centers on the lives of four sisters ? Jo (a fiercely independent writer) Amy (an artist) Meg (whose main ambition is husband and family) and Beth (a pianist in delicate health. The home fires are managed by their mother, Marmee, who is frugal, ever-thoughtful and admirably altruistic, with occasional intrusion from wealthy elderly Aunt March. Laurie is a rich, indolent heartthrob-next-door in constant pursuit of Jo. Professor Bhaer is an academic Jo meets during a sojourn in New York City. Alcotts text is often described as an “idealized autobiography” ? the characters are based on friends and family members, but reconstructed with considerable literary license. This novel has been the basis for many stage plays, musicals, radio shows, even a few operas. Inevitably, there have been several previous TV and movie productions, including a 1978 NBC mini-series sporting William Shatner as the professor with an amazing German accent, a 1949 movie with Elizabeth Taylor as Amy, a 1933 movie with Katherine Hepburn as Jo and a 1994 movie in which Winona Ryder was Oscar-nominated for her performance as Jo, with Christian Bale as Laurie. All of this is to suggest that if youre going to address this chestnut again, it had better be well-roasted on that open fire. Fortunately, Gerwigs trip down memory lane is well-done, in every respect. One great strength of the current production is the balance of its cast. As Jo, Saoirse Ronan is reunited with Gerwig, who directed her in “Lady Bird” (Ronan received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress while Gerwig was nominated for both Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Her intense independence drives the story at several key points. As Laurie, Timothee Chalamet (“Lady Bird, ” “Call Me by Your Name”) causes regular swooning among the female population, onscreen and in the theater. Florence Pugh (“Little Drummer Girl”) as Amy and Emma Watson (Harry Potter series) as Meg also are compelling. There are additional strong performances by actresses playing against type ? Lara Dern as Marmee is warm, empathic and grounded. Meryl Streep as the manipulative Aunt March draws well-earned hisses. But its Gerwigs screenplay that is the real star of this show. Gerwig masterfully crafts the films final act to update the original novel in ways that seem much more true to Alcotts life and beliefs. She also weaves in other Alcott material to bolster her empowerment theme. In the third act, Gerwig borrows material from Alcotts “Rose in Bloom” (1876) to capture the essence of Jos frustration with the world around her: “Women, they have minds and they have souls, as well as just hearts… Im so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for. ” The film is made even more interesting if the moviegoer considers that, while Alcott has clearly modeled Jo after herself, perhaps Gerwig herself is equally entwined with the pair. The Act One scene of Jo and Laurie dancing maniacally outside on the porch seems to channel the goofy gracefulness or graceful goofiness of some of Gerwigs previous acting roles, particularly “Frances Ha” and “Mistress America. ” All this makes “Little Women” feel intimate, urgent and important, even for the males of the species. “Little Women” may be an effective antidote to the mania of the Safdie Brothers “Uncut Gems, ” which is another way of saying it drags in places. But its also uplifting, timely, observant and well worth your time.

Little Women Introduction Little Women is a classic ? if not the classic ? girls' book. Written just after the Civil War in response to a publisher's demand for a novel that could appeal to young female readers, it was originally published as two books: Chapters 1-23 were issued in 1868 with the title Little Women, and, after the book became a sensational success, Chapters 24-47 were issued in 1869 with the title Good Wives. Today we read both sections together as Little Women, but it's important to know that the book began in two pieces, because there's more separating them than time. The first half of the book is loosely based on Louisa May Alcott's own life; in fact, it's semi-autobiographical, and reflects the experiences she had growing up with her sisters in New England. After it was published, readers wrote to Alcott and her publishers asking for more, and especially asking about the girls' love lives. Most readers wanted to know who each sister married ? especially whether Jo married Laurie. Alcott herself remained unmarried all her life, so, in order to write the sequel, she had to depart from autobiography and write straight-up fiction. Without her own life experiences, the second part of the novel may feel less realistic. However, no amount of fan-mail could force Alcott to marry off the two main characters in the way her readers expected. What does she do? Well, you'll have to read the book to find out, but let's just say you probably won't see it coming! Little Women has been popular ever since its first publication; after more than 140 years, it still appeals to readers young and old, female and male ? although, admittedly, the majority of the novel's lifelong lovers are female. The story has been adapted three times as a film, starring first Katharine Hepburn, then June Allyson, then Winona Ryder as Jo March. It has also been transformed into a play, an opera, and a musical. Apart from the different version of Little Women itself, we think we can detect the influence of Little Women on other great North American girls' books, such as The Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables, as well as some of the great British girls' books of the time, such as A Little Princess. Part of the fascination with the novel is its treatment of gender roles, which balances tradition and gender distinction with more forward-thinking, proto-feminist attitudes. We fully expect that readers will be considering and debating issues of gender in this novel for many decades to come. What is Little Women About and Why Should I Care? This one's a bit tricky. After all, readers of Little Women tend to fall into two camps. First, there are people who read this novel and fall in love with it. For example, we know women who read this book first when they were girls and now read it over and over again, coming back to it every few years to savor the trials and triumphs of the March sisters. These are women who identify with Jo's ambition and with Meg's romantic nature, who love reading and appreciate all the literary references in the book. That's the book's fan base, and it grows all the time as new readers discover the story again. If you're one of these readers, you can stop reading this section now and go check out our "Character Analysis" of Jo and then leave a comment to tell us what you think of it! If you're still with us, then you fall into the second camp of readers: people who do not fall in love with Little Women right away, who might not even find it interesting. After all, this is a novel without a villain, without any battles or even any serious fights. Well, yeah, Jo gets mad at Amy and ignores her for a few days, but that's about it. All the major conflict is emotional, ethical, and psychological. Plus, the book considers the position of women in nineteenth-century America. Again, that's significant, but it also means that most of the action in the novel takes place in the private, domestic sphere. This is a cozy, home-y book, and that can make it feel like the stakes aren't as high. What we're saying is, ladies and gentlemen, we understand if you aren't as excited about this novel as we are. But the good news is, we've got reasons why you should care about this book. Oh, sure, there are the reasons your English teacher could give you. One, this novel is incredibly influential, both on American literature and on the development of the young adult novel and children's book. Two, Alcott shows you how the abstract issues facing the Transcendental philosophers really play out in everyday life. Three, people today are still concerned with figuring out how to balance the way they appear to their friends with behaving in an ethical way, and this book is all about learning to sacrifice appearances for principles. But if that's not doing it for you, how about this: character! As you're reading, we challenge you not to find people you know, or personality traits that you're familiar with, in the cast of characters. Are you really telling us you don't know someone like Amy ? someone who worries more about the shape of her nose than whether she's a good person? Or someone like Aunt March, who likes to throw her weight around and tell other people what to do, but has become lonely and isolated as a result? Or someone like Jo, who has ambitions that seem to clash with her family duties? Aside from moral lessons, historical significance, and the sheer enjoyment of reading, Alcott's novel includes a well-drawn cast of characters that are still familiar to us. And if you keep reading, you just might find yourself among them ? and if you're not careful, you'll find that all your own flaws are being exposed, and punished, and satirized. So this is your warning: you better keep might find your most embarrassing trait on the next page! Greta Gerwig once again delivers in her reimagination of Little Women, and it is very good. The performances by the entire cast is beautiful; Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Timothée Chalamet, Laura Dern, basically everyone is amazing in this movie. The writing and directing by Gerwig is very well done. As well as the cinematography by Yorick Le Saux, it is spot on. Also credits to Jacqueline Durran for the great outfits and Jess Gonchor for beautiful set design. The narrative itself is (as I've heard) slightly different compared to the originals and the novel, and it's more tailored towards modern audiences. But that aside, it's still excellent, engaging and heartwarming. There is one minor flaw with this movie and that's the time-jumps/flashback sequences. During some scenes it's easy to tell which is past and which is present, maybe some characters have a different haircut or the colour tone is contrasting between past and present. But there are a few scenes where the "jumps" are a bit too quick and often that you begin to lose track of which is current. Other than that, this movie is really enjoyable. One of the most enjoyable movies I've seen in a long, long time. It's nice, funny, sad, cute and gorgeous.

I have seen every film and TV version of Little Women since I was four. I've read the book 5000+ times and have a favorite copy of the book. I grew up watching the 90s film version with Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon, etc, and my mom and sister and I watch it every Christmas together. But THIS adaptation. This one is the very best, out of all of the adaptations. I just saw it today with my grandmother, and I cried, both happy and sad tears, all throughout this film. It is TRULY the adaptation that Louisa May Alcott would be so proud of. I loved how Greta did this. The cast was phenomenal, the music in it. Everything. Everything was amazing. I, like many others, went into this film already having a favorite adaptation, and I'll be honest, I was a teensy bit skeptical about whether this would be better than my favorite. But oh, it was. And this adaptation will now always be my favorite.
