It's hard to say exactly what makes this one so good for me, because its flaws are pretty obvious. Gene Kelly is way too aggressive when he first pursues Leslie Caron, almost in a creepy sort of way. It doesn't help that he's over twice her age. And the way Nina Foch is treated is pretty cruel. Most of that I attribute to the culture under which it was made. Plus, combined with the ecstatic feeling I get with the reunion of Jerry and Lise, I think the sadness I feel for Milo as well as Henri gives the film a wonderful bittersweet tone. The musical numbers are uniformly fantastic. The standout is Kelly's "I've Got Rhythm" with the little kids - I love "Singin' in the Rain" but this one blows it out of the water. And of course the 18 minute ballet that ends the film is the tour de force of tours de force. To me, it's the epitome of dance, music and cinema.

"An American in Paris" is a pretty good film, but has always been over-rated in my opinion. The film deals with a young American artist (Gene Kelly) in post-World War II France who falls in love with a very young woman (Leslie Caron) during his stay there. The Oscar-winning screenplay is not very smart (very seldom does a musical have a good screenplay) at all to me. None of the performances are overly impressive either. It is the flawless direction and the amazing set decorations that save "An American in Paris. This film won the Best Picture Oscar in 1951 (it was only the second film in color to win the award, Gone With the Wind" was first. However, it is little more than a curiosity today. There are numerous musicals that are overall better than this one. 4 stars out of 5.
