Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2020 Format: Blu-ray Set after the events of Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) has split up with the Joker and is trying to start a new life. However when a young girl (Ella Jay Brasco) becomes the target of the crime lord Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), she joins Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth-Winstead) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to save her. DC really seem to have worked out what they need to do now to standout against and rival Marvel when it comes to the comic book movie genre. With a triple hit of distinctive excellent director driven films (Aquaman, Shazam! & Joker) and now this, they really are delivering in making each film unique and not solely relying on world-building and continuity. Birds Of Prey is very much the DCEU's Deadpool, right down to the fourth wall breaking narration provided by Harley. Unfortunately the plot structuring (and at time's Harley's narration) is the film's let down, we are introduced to the various character's situations and different points and Harley will either rewind or pause the narrative to explain what is happening to the audience. This is jarring at first, but seeing how each character links to the plot is cleverly implemented and certainly gives the film it's own style compared to the other DCEU instalments. What I really appreciated was just how much of the film is spending time with Harley as she just get's on with her life. We see her apartment, her pet Hyena (called Bruce) and her daily routine, which includes one of the best egg sandwiches ever put to screen. There is no doubt that this is Harley's movie despite the title starting with the team name, the film mainly works as an introduction and beginning of the team and a promise of more in the future which I really hope happens. The technical aspects of the film are all excellent. The colour pallete is a punky colourful neon tinged assault on the senses with several 'pause worthy' shots and impressive cinematography. The film has clearly utilised its smaller budget well as the film looks more expensive than it probably was. The locations are varied and well designed with lot's of detail and props which fit the characters and the tone of Gotham City. The action is an absolute blast to behold, there are several creative sequences throughout ranging from roller skate car chases to police evidence brawls, all shot and choreographed very well so you can see exactly what is going on and due to the age rating the film takes full advantage with the blood and literal bone crunching moments. It's clear how much Robbie cares about this character (with her pushing for this film since 2015 and having an executive producer credit) she truly makes Harley Quinn her own and it will be near-impossible for anyone to follow up her portrayal. She goes all in, cackling widly, crying, partying and dropping f-bombs left, right and centre. She clearly is doing a lot of her own stunts here as well and throws herself into the action scenes with some very memorable sequences. The rest of the team may not get as much focus but they all deliver great performances. Elizabeth-Winstead gives a quirky performance as the cool, deadly serious Crossbow Ki... I mean Huntress, Perez is excellent in the hardened dedicated cop role and Smollett-Ball gives a great performance as Black Canary and like Robbie has some impressive action chorepgraphy moments. McGregor is clearly having a riot as the flamboyant yet sadistic and psychopathic Black Mask, capturing the egotistical nature of the character perfectly and I will admit I was skeptical of the look of Zsasz in the promotional material but Chris Messina gives a truly creepy and disturbing aura to the character and the film doesn't shy away from his face-slicing and peeling glory. Ella Jay Basco also delivers in her first feature film role as the cocky thief Cassandra Cain. Birds Of Prey is a shot of adrenaline fuelled fun right into the vein. An engaging and over-the-top story filled with well timed jokes, charismatic performances, some of the DCEU's best action choreography and well shot and designed sets that bring Gotham to life. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 February 2020 Format: Blu-ray This film was an absolute mess! I had no idea what was going on. I was bored half way through. The acting was ok but it just felt unoriginal and it was just boring! Don't waste your time and watch Joker instead. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2020 Format: DVD A week after release everyone has an opinion on why this flopped. Was it the long title? The lack of recognition of Birds of Prey characters? Men didn't want to see it? The coronavirus affected ticket sales? Maybe it's all these things. For me it was an okay movie, nowhere near as good as Suicide Squad, either in terms of Harley's character or the overall narrative. I realise the intention was to go for a more comedic tone but after 90 minutes of Margot Robbie mugging at the camera I started thinking about how great Johnny Depp was in the early pirates movies and then they put him centre stage and it was overkill. Like eating chocolate cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A little goes a long way, is what I'm saying. In Suicide Squad you got a sense Harley was crazy, funny and deadly. Here she's just crazy. That's not to say there's nothing to enjoy here - there are some great fight sequences by the creator of John Wick/Atomic Blonde, and the last 20 minutes when the Birds of Prey (finally) team up is terrific. But the first half of the movie is plagued with pacing issues, bland characters and worst of all, a bland villain. I like McGregor but here he was on autopilot. The only character other than Harley I enjoyed was Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Perhaps it's because she gets the strongest backstory or simply the fact she underplays while everyone else is stuck at 11. It's not a BAD movie, but neither is it particularly good. It's a little too smug, with a weak script and narrative. It reminded me of that 90s bomb Tank Girl, and while it's not that level of awful, it flirts dangerously close to it. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 February 2020 Format: Blu-ray Didn't take long for the DCEU to return to form. The film revolves around the premise that every guy, without exception, is bad from the cops to every guy in the movie. The one-note message has seen it receive bad box office and mixed critical reviews. We've had better untrustworthy narrator films - The Usual Suspects, Memento, this is nowhere near either's quality. We've had far better comic book movies - Joker, Wonder Woman, Road to Perdition. We've had better feminist films - Marianne and Juliane, Vagabond, The Day I Became a Woman. This is a messy, sub-Deadpool agenda movie that the studio tried to save by renaming it after release. Avoid, avoid, avoid and wait until Wonder Woman 1984 comes out and tries to right the rapidly sinking DCEU again. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 February 2020 Format: Blu-ray Harley Quinn is such an out of control character, so quirky and unpredictable. Taking crap from no one, Harley moves through Gotham trying to get over her break up from the Joker and the protection he offered. Now it's open season on Quinn and every lowlife is gonna try to take her down. Margot Robbie is great as Harley Quinn and that is undeniable. The charisma and energy help drive the movie forward, but only so far. The plot is fairly low key, the bad guy doesn't like Quinn so orders her to be killed. He's also after a diamond that a girl has, who Quinn happens to get to first. The film is very vibrant and kinetic, but with the lack of a strong plot feels an exercise in "look how much fun Quinn is? " Now if you are just a fan of the character then you are probably gonna love this. I enjoyed the film but I ultimately found it rather hollow.

Birds of prey and the fantabulous emancipation of one harley quinn trailer 2 reaction. Birds of prey: and the fantabulous emancipation of one harley quinn film. This ending, full marks awarded. Warner Bros. learned this past weekend that Birds of Prey, otherwise known as Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), isn’t exactly search engine optimization (SEO) friendly. The sequel of sorts to Suicide Squad barely made a dent in the box office due to many marketing issues involving the film, and, as a result, Warner Bros. has changed the name of the movie to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. The title change appeared last night on ticket sites for major theaters. A Warner Bros. representative told The Verge that the name change is part of a “search expansion for ticket sites, ” making it easier for people to find the movie. Adding Harley Quinn’s name to the beginning of the title also gives moviegoers a better understanding of what Birds of Prey is about, an issue the movie has faced in recent weeks. Birds of Prey ’s opening weekend wasn’t the success that Warner Bros. had planned for a movie about a popular DC character being portrayed by Margot Robbie. The film only generated $33 million domestically, coming up short against investors’ $50 to $55 million projection. The low box office return came as a surprise to industry insiders who noted that Birds of Prey was one of the best-reviewed DC movies in recent years, earning high scores on Rotten Tomatoes. So what went wrong? One industry executive with knowledge of the matter referred to the rollout as a disaster. Like a domino effect, a few things went wrong at once: bad marketing, bad trailers, and bad title decisions. A few trade publications have compared Birds of Prey ’s rollout to Fox’s terrible marketing of the X-Men installment Dark Phoenix. Like Birds of Prey, Dark Phoenix didn’t have “X-Men” in it. And for people who might not be aware of Jean Grey’s character, Dark Phoenix looked like a random sci-fi movie, not the final chapter in an X-Men series. The poor marketing and heavy criticism the film received led to a major box office bomb, only generating $65 million domestically. Disney CEO Bob Iger even referenced the film’s box office failure in a call with investors, pointing to it as a reason the studio division of Disney’s company took a hit that quarter. Harley Quinn is an extremely popular character with major name recognition, much like Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and Joker. The decision to forgo using her name in the first place baffled industry members. What’s unclear is how much of the lengthy title came from Warner Bros. and how much of it was a creative decision from director Cathy Yan. The studio has been criticized for swapping out names on directors in the past: director Doug Liman originally wanted to name his 2014 action movie starring Tom Cruise Live Die Repeat, but Warner Bros. went with Edge of Tomorrow instead. Much like Birds of Prey, the film was considered a financial disappointment despite the critical acclaim it received. Liman insisted part of the reason was the generic-sounding title Warner Bros. decided to go with. The marketing for the film eventually emphasized “Live Die Repeat” as a tagline. It’s not just the title, though. A person with knowledge of the situation also noted that none of Birds of Prey ’s trailers explained what the film was about. Instead of leaning into the R rating and releasing a series of redband trailers (like Deadpool and Amazon’s The Boys did), Birds of Prey ’s trailers played it safe. Normally, that would be fine, but Birds of Prey is a movie that works because of its utter ridiculousness and R-rated qualities. To not show off that side of the film in the trailers and marketing leading up to its release is seen as a failure by many in the industry. At the end of the day, Warner Bros. is trying to fix its rocky rollout with a new SEO game plan. There’s a good chance that Birds of Prey can find more success over the next few weeks: there’s little competition at the box office, and with Harley Quinn at the front of the new title, there’s a better chance people will know what Birds of Prey is about.

Birds of prey and the fantabulous emancipation of one harley quinn book. Thanks hj. Birds of prey and the fantabulous emancipation of one harley quinn poster. Didnt care for it that much. The story was well crafted and the overall editing, action and style of the film was dead on. That being said, the legacy “hooks” of a character that the comic book demographic likes to relate to, isnt there. There are no emotional, characteristics or traits that links me to relate to any of the characters substantially enough to have the film resonate with me. I am sure that, over time there will be a broader audience base who will relate to the Quinn character. I liked Huntress but she wasnt the focus. The overall “girl theme” was hard for me to grasp. There needed to be at least two central characters that required a deeper relationship that sticks. There might have been potential between Cain and Quinn but that “big sis” theme wasnt the focus either. The entire film felt like scrambled eggs pudding, a slice of roast beef, an apple- sole tasty parts and enough nutrition for a body, looks good on a plate, but not truly a well prepared culinary meal.
