Also known as "Miss Wayne" Pauline was not Taft's first presidential cow: she replaced the lesser-known "Mooly Wooly" which provided milk for the First Family for a year and a half before suddenly dying in 1910, reportedly after eating too many oats. [1] Taft and his wife, Helen Herron Taft, had growing children, and Taft was a notoriously large eater; accordingly, Mooly Wooly was replaced by Pauline Wayne. Wisconsin senator Isaac Stephenson bought Pauline Wayne for Mrs. Taft. [2] The four year-old cow was pregnant and gave birth to a male calf named "Big Bill" after the President) which was later sent to a Maryland farm. [1] Pauline Wayne became a popular showpiece at the International Dairymens Exposition in Milwaukee in 1911. Pauline Wayne was being shipped to the show in a private train car that was attached to a whole train of cattle cars bound for the Chicago stock yards. The cow went missing for two days because a train switch crew had mistakenly switched Paulines car. The attendants who found Pauline Wayne convinced the stock yard that this was indeed the Presidents cow, and she was saved "from the bludgeon of the slaughterer. 1] 3. From 1910 to 1913, Miss Wayne freely grazed the White House lawn. [4] She was the last presidential cow to live at the White House and was considered as much a Taft family pet as she was livestock. When Taft left office, she was shipped to Wisconsin. [5] Her Bovine Blue Book number was 115, 580. That head scarf is so cute. Where is it from. We finally braced ourselves for a family holiday and a ten days one at that. We survived it and it wasnt as bad as we thought so heres part one of our 10 day free and easy trip to Taiwan. These are the places we covered in Taiwan? from mid to end May, Miaoli. Cing Jing ->??Hua Lian ->?Taipei We checked in early for our flight to allow Sophie some play time before we took off for our 5-hour flight from Singapore to Taipei. 3 storey high playground at Changi Terminal 3 I had initially prepared a bag of activities for the flight. But silly me forgot to bring along Sophies coloured pencils and I was surprised that the air stewardess said they didnt have any as the activity pack given was a jigsaw set and a pencil case. How boring. With nothing to keep her entertained, I had to answer a hundred and one questions from her until the flight entertainment was finally up and we all got to enjoy some telly time. Little Sophie had her eyes glued to the screen She finally knocked out half an hour before we landed which was just as well since we had to take another 2 hours cab ride to Flying Cow Ranch for our very first farm stay! Weve heard good reviews about it from friends and TripAdvisor so we were looking forward to it. Taiwan Adventure Day 1 and 2- Flying Cow Ranch From Tao Yuan airport, we hailed a taxi and traveled 2 hours to get to Flying Cow Ranch. If youre going in a big group of 5 or more, Ill advise you to get Flying Cow Ranch to arrange for pick up in a mini van. Charges do apply, so youll have to check with them when youre making your bookings. We arrived at the Flying Cow Ranch in the evening and was surprised by the spacious room when we checked in. It may be simple in deco but proved to be a comfortable stay. The room was well equipped with a mini fridge, hot flask, hair dryer, basic amenities, and was much roomier than I expected. We wasted no time and headed for the last activity for the evening where they were conducting a ?DIY activity, baking milk biscuits. Sophie was enthusiastic about?helping and assisted to?sieve the flour and stir in the ingredients. She even told me she learnt to bake in her childcare. Our red bean sandwiched between two biscuits was a success and they tasted surprisingly delicious! Before we turned it for the night, we were treated to fresh milk from the farm with the vouchers we received from our stay. I loved the malt flavored version which was sweeter compared to the regular milk but it was certainly a refreshing flavour. The next morning, its off to the farm we go! Exploring Flying Cow Ranch The first activity we did was to feed the calves. Unfortunately, Sophie is too young for the task as we were told that the calves would suck hard at the teat of the bottle and unlike her milk bottle, the top is not screwed on. So Alexis and I had out go at feeding instead. My fingers were massaged as the calves licked and sucked on the teat! After feeding the calves, I had my go at milking?the cow. It was not as tricky as some described. Then again, I was a breastfeeding mum ? ?Sophie wasnt keen to have a go at it and kept at a safe distance to watch from the side. The poor cow must have felt so violated having to be milked by so many hands. After the session was over, we noticed that the cows had their teats sterilised. At least, we know that the milk that it produced is not contaminated. Barbado sheeps behind us Other feeding that took place on the farm included the kids (baby goats) ducks and rabbits We also bought some leaves to feed the goats Self-service sheep feed Next we went on to feed the rabbits that were housed in another area. I loved how this farm provided lots of opportunities for Sophie to get up close to the animals and to feed them. Getting back to the main accommodation area was a rather long walk but along the way, there were sights like these musical bells which caught Sophies attention. Theres lots and lots of greenery which was certainly a welcomed sight We didnt join the rest of the afternoon DIY activities and decided to have their famous fresh milk based steamboat before we left. It was a healthy meal with lots of greens and it reminded me of carbonara where the sweetness of the milk can be tasted in the cooked food. Definitely, not to be missed. And for dessert, we had a milk pudding that was interestingly shaped in a “balloon” which had to be pricked open. There are plenty of cow related merchandise that you can purchase as a souvenir?to remember your stay here at the Flying Cow Ranch. Flying Cow Ranch Taiwan Review of Flying Cow Ranch Although we only spent one day and one night at the Flying Cow Ranch, it gave us sufficient time to explore and take part in the activities which are great for family bonding. Families with young kids will definitely enjoy this place though I wished there were more interactive signages to allow children to learn about life on the farm, the different stages of animals growth, etc. Be prepared to walk as youll have to climb stairs to get to the main activity area and then out to the farm. Not all parts of the farm are stroller friendly due to the stairs. Complimentary breakfast is served and there is also a?fast food restaurant, a Western restaurant and a Chinese restaurant, so you dont have to worry about options for meals on the ranch. We enjoyed interesting meals like the milk based steamboat which is surely a first for me. The staff were friendly and helpful with our luggage and provided directions around the farm. I was impressed at how clean and spacious the rooms were with comfortable bedding.?Overall the farm stay at Flying Cow Ranch was a fun experience for us and Ill recommend it to friends with young children for a taste of life on the farm. Posted on Wednesday, January 8th, 2020 by Meeks Cutoff and? Wendy and Lucy director? Kelly Reichardt has a talent for portraying the American working class experience through quiet, contemplative frontier dramas ? letting humanity shine through the grim wilderness. Her latest film,? First Cow, does that as well, but under the cover of a rather quirky premise: a cook and a refugee strike up a close friendship and an unusual business deal by stealing milk from a cow. It sounds like the set-up for a joke, but it is in fact the foundation for one of the most lovely and tender portrayals of male friendship in some time. Watch the? First Cow trailer below. Read More ? Her films might not blare “its the economy, stupid, ” but make no bones about it ? Kelly Reichardts cinema frequently obsesses over how the mechanics of commercial arrangements affect interpersonal relationships. Though micro in scale, her films are macro in mindset. Her latest look at the subject, First Cow, goes all the way back to the fledgling days of American capitalism. The film finds an effective and ultimately touching contrast between the friendships born of enterprising businessmen and the ruthlessness of competing with entrenched elites. Ive heard from many a festival-goer that its possible to work through the entire New York Film Festival lineup ? or at least its premier section, the Main Slate ? given how the event spreads out manageably over the course of seventeen days all at Lincoln Center. But with schedule conflicts or lack of interest in certain titles, its a feat seldom seen or accomplished. Or, maybe given how gluttonous I feel after having done this myself, people choose not to brag about it if they do manage to pull it off. While battling fatigue as well as exhaustion, plus countless instances of doubting if this was something I actually wanted to do, I managed to see all 29 films programmed in this years NYFF Main Slate. (If youre the ranking type, I did just that over on Letterboxd. I learned plenty about myself and some masochistic moviegoing habits after subjecting myself to this marathon of viewing contemporary cinema, but thats a subject for another piece. Its impossible to watch this incredible selection of films from across the globe and not have some larger takeaways about trends, patterns and parallels. Here are ten lessons from surveying the Main Slate in its entirety. Read More ? As we head into the second week of the 57th annual New York Film Festival, lets look back at the best that week 1 of the festival had to offer us. Dive into our New York Film Festival 2019 Week 1 recap. In my six years of attending the New York Film Festival, Ive grown increasingly appreciative of the unique position its organizers have carved out in the fall festival landscape. Ideally timed between the premiere frenzy of late August/early September and the mad dash for awards of November and December, NYFF keeps its focus solely on the films and their creators. For 17 days, the newly-branded Film at Lincoln Center invites New Yorkers to partake in a manageable, curated slate of favorites from across the global festival circuit. The 2019 edition of NYFF casts a particularly wide net, too ? apart from the festivals three big Friday night galas, the Main Slate features only one English-language feature. But if youre not going to be in New York to see these films, why not use the time to catch up on the back catalogues of the directors in the NYFF selection? This years Main Slate features both emerging international voices and widely recognized masters alike, presenting a unique opportunity to broaden your cinematic horizons. Below are ten films playing at the festival (some of which Ive been fortunate enough to see prior to NYFFs official kickoff) and ten films you can watch to prepare yourself from the comfort of your own home. I remember hearing (what I assume was) this story on This American Life a couple years ago and was most moved by it. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it this weekend. Say that 5 times fast. I remember visiting the Turkey Hill Experience with my roommate in Pennsylvania. My roommate crouched under a fake cow, fiddling with its udders like an imbecile. “When she says she likes country boys, ” he said. To my chagrin, this episode stuck in my head for quite some time, and ever since, Ive wondered about the first cow milker. This is a question that has been floating around on the Internet for awhile: why did the first man to milk a cow milk it in the first place? Some would say desperation or starvation, others might say perversion. In any case, this “common sense, ” explanation is not enough. By just assuming, well never have a deeper understanding of the history of part of our culture ? that is, the history of milk and how it contributed to the development of the human body, the food industry, and even smallpox. I, myself, never considered the importance of milk, besides the fact that I need it for my tea and oatmeal in the morning. We take it for granted ? some people might not realize that milking cows brought about the domestication of cattle, the development of butter and cheese, and actually shaped the food industry we know and need today; yet, we dont really know how cow-milking initially came to become part of modern culture. One could argue that this says a lot about our society, appreciating the results but not understanding the origin. Regardless, in the pursuit of such knowledge, this begs the question: why did the first cow milker decide to milk a cow, and how did milk persist to become the global commodity it is today? Listen to a dairy cow, if you really want to. Across the millions of forums spanning the web, a surprising amount of people discuss the origins of cows milk. The people in question are of varying ages, and they dont have to have a vested interest in farming. Despite their curiosity, it came to my attention that they seem to be asking the wrong questions. There are massive gaps in commentary. To understand why, how, and when cows were domesticated, we must first understand where they came from. The wild ancestors of modern cows were called Aurochs. They once ranged throughout Asia, Europe and North Africa. According to ProCons Historical Timeline of Cows Milk, Aurochs were first domesticated 8, 000 to 10, 000 years ago. They evolved into two types of domestic cattle, bos indicus and bos taurus. Aurochs (left) vs the modern bovine (right) Bos indicus is a breed of cattle that are more suited to tropical climates, while bos taurus are adapted to temperate environments. As a result, scientists have differing opinions on the spread of said domesticated cattle. Some believe Aurochs spread throughout Eurasia, and others believe that other Aurochs were domesticated separately in the Pakistan/India area. It makes sense, then, that Aurochs adapted to temperate and tropical climates, if they were domesticated in separate countries. Be that as it may, according to degraded fats found on European pot shards ascribed to the Neolithic Era (according to the ASPRO chronology, the Neolithic Era dates from 10, 200 B. C. to 4500/2000 B. English and Northern European farmers may have been the first or among the first to begin drinking cows milk. Its possible that the first Aurochs were milked 8, 000 to 10, 000 years ago in two different parts of the world, since domestication is attributed to cow-milking, but its likely that European farmers were the first. As such, humans have been drinking cows milk for about 6, 000?8, 000 years. (See: “ Early Brits Were Original Cheeseheads, ”, Oct. 10, 2006. Even if Neolithic farmers were engaging in the consumption of cows milk, scientists say that early Europeans ? and other early milk-drinkers ? were lactose intolerant. It was only later that humans slowly achieved the ability to digest milk through a genetic mutation, “lactase persistence. ” This is the continued activity of the enzyme lactase throughout adulthood. The mutation occurred about 7, 500 years ago, between 5000?4000 B. Its likely that before the genetic mutation ? even as the farmers depended on milk for nourishment ? if they were drinking it, they were still suffering through lactose intolerance. It took years for the genetic mutation to occur, but I daresay intolerance is better than starving. Even though we have all of this information, we still dont understand why. Why did they drink it in the first place? Its a safe assumption to say that the first milker (as Ive affectionately come to refer to him as) didnt suddenly decide to conduct sexual experiments with his farm animals. Likewise, he probably didnt wake up and say, “Hey, today Im going to further Western civilization with a revolutionary discovery. ” Rather, its likely the the man in question ? or men, it couldve been any number of people ? were starving. They couldve witnessed the cows calf suckling on its mothers teat for nourishment, and went to try it themselves. While it is still speculation, the most likely hypothesis is that desperation and starvation drove early farmers to cows milk; this is the most widely accepted theory in the historical farming community, although the exact person and reason may be debated. How then, despite the initial intolerance, did milk grow to become a major part of farming and modern culture? The production of milk provided a constant source of nourishment for early farmers, and it grew into other products. Milk is credited with the development of the modern food industry because of its presence in much of todays culture, but also because of the creation of cheese and butter. Neither would exist if one brave farmer hadnt tempted fate on what I assume was one of many particularly dismal mornings. In what is now Kujawy, Poland, archaeologists found ancient strainers with evidence of milk fats molecules. This dates cheese-making to approximately 5, 500 B. Consequently, the earliest record of cheese joins the archaeological record earlier than butter, which doesnt appear until approximately 2, 500 B. C., and may have even been named after cheese. The word “butter, ” is believed to be derived from the Greek term, “bou-tyron, ” which literally translates to “cow cheese. ” The first appearance of butter in recorded history was on an ancient Sumerian tablet depicting dairy production in its earliest forms, including cow-milking and butter-making. “5000 Years of Human Culture and Civilization. ” After cheese and butter became staples in the average kitchen, milk and other dairy products still progressed to become huge commodities; milk has been described as the “virtual queen of the supermarket, ” as told by author Deborah Valenze in her book, Milk: A Local and Global History. Contrary to its blurry origins, milk actually has a fairly clear history within the last few hundred years. Why does this history matter? Well, dont you care how your food has been produced? Food studies have become more popular recently, paving the way for the modernized food industry and other commodities we altered to create a so-called “sterile commercial identity…” But thats another issue. Even though the food industry we know today was formed slowly, it stretches hundreds of years into the past, branching out as the first cattle arrived at the Plymouth colony in 1623. When the pilgrims sailed to Plymouth, they did not bring any cattle aboard the Mayflower. The pilgrims cattle didnt arrive in the “New World, ” until the ship Anne arrived in 1623, and the ship Jacob in 1624. The cattle described on the ships werent diminutive, but nor were they massive. They were described as having black hides, so it is speculated that the cows were in fact Kerry cattle, a now rare and historic breed. Kerry cattle As the Americas expanded, milk played a vital role in the survival of its people. During the food shortage of 1772, Roman Catholic Spanish priest Junípero Serra said, “…milk from the cows and some vegetables from the garden have been [our] chief subsistence. ” Afterward, the benefits of milk drinking only spread ? milk continued to evolve with society in earnest, becoming a huge part of production. The history of cows ? and by extension, milk ? stretches beyond the food industry, and they werent used just to supply sustenance. In the 18th century, common folk Europeans began to realize that milkmaids ? who milked cows on a daily basis ? were seemingly immune to smallpox. Upon further investigation, the public realized that these dairymaids had contracted cowpox due to their near-constant exposure to the cows udders, resulting in an unintentional immunity to smallpox. Cowpox is a similar virus to smallpox, albeit much milder as the bovine equivalent. This knowledge and the spreading plague led English physician Edward Jenner to develop a vaccine based on the milkmaids immunity. Jenner recovered a sample of cowpox from the women and used it to deliberately infect a young boy named James Phipps. Afterward, Jenner exposed Phipps to smallpox ? and James Phipps did not contract the disease. After experimenting with other willing subjects, Jenner officially concluded that exposure to cowpox resulted in smallpox immunity. He later marketed the cowpox vaccination, and in the United States, the vaccination was introduced in the early 1800s. The origins of the vaccine After cowpox was used as an indirect vaccination against smallpox, the demand for milk grew exponentially between 1840 and the 1920s. In the 19th century, alcohol distillery companies similarly grew, resulting in excess swill, which are a spent-grain byproduct of alcohol production. The distilleries began opening dairies to feed their cows with excess waste swill. The swill was low in nutrients and otherwise poor feed for the cows, which resulted in po

Reichardt's tender story of 19th century friendship consolidates the themes of her previous movies to hypnotic effect. Few filmmakers wrestle with what it means to be American the way Kelly Reichardt has injected that question into all of her movies. In a meticulous fashion typical of her spellbinding approach, “ First Cow ” consolidates the potent themes of everything leading up to it: It returns her to the nascent America of the 19th century frontier at the center of “Meeks Cutoff, ” touches on the environmental frustrations of “Night Moves, ” revels in the glorious isolation of the countryside in “Certain Women, ” and the somber travails of vagrancy at the center of “Wendy and Lucy. ” Mostly, though, “First Cow” unfolds like “Old Joy” in the Oregon Territory. Once again, Reichardt has crafted a wondrous little story about two friends roaming the natural splendors of the Pacific Northwest, searching for their place in the world. The appeal of this hypnotic, unpredictable movie comes from how they find that place through mutual failure, and the nature of that outcome in the context of an early, untamed America has rich implications that gradually seep into the frame. Reichardt excels at communing with natural beauty and humankinds complex relationship to it, but “First Cow” pushes that motif into timeless resonance. Though the bulk of “First Cow” unfolds in 1820, it begins with a modern-day prologue in the same woodsy location, where a young woman (Alia Shawkat in a fleeting cameo) uncovers two skeletons lying side by side in the woods. That tantalizing image follows a quote from William Blake ? “the bird a nest, the spider a web, man friendship” ? establishing the instinctive bond that follows. From there, the movie flashes back to the distant past, telling the origin story of those skeletons as an unsuspecting buddy movie. It begins with the plight of Cookie (John Magaro) a shy pushover roaming through the forest and serving as the cook for a group of virile fur trappers. Foraging one night after dark, he comes across a wandering Chinese man named King-Lu (Orion Lee) who left his native land long ago and claims to be on the lam from Russians. Its never quite clear just how much King-Lus story has been invented by the mysterious traveler, but when the pair reconnect at the barren Royal West Pacific Trading Post, they immediately bond over mutual alienation. And then, a sneaky business opportunity: When they spot a nearby property owner bringing the first cow to the region, they come up with a plot to steal its milk so they can sell biscuits and oil cakes to the weary travelers passing through the region. With time, this plot becomes an origin story of greed, desperation, and the American dream, rooting it in a sincere desire to find success in an unforgiving world. Cookie and King-Lu may be reckless, but theyre a lovable pair, compelled by a quest to succeed that transcends the specificity of its setting. Theres a fundamental metaphorical dimension to this unusual plot ? the very nature of Eastern and Western characters, hesitant to join forces as they map out an unrealistic plan to conquer the world, invites many interpretations ??but Reichardt doesnt overplay it. Instead, “First Cow” lingers in the scenery, with cinematographer Christopher Blauvelt drawing out the storybook wonders of a landscape dominated by hulking trees and unforgiving rivers. “History hasnt gotten here yet, ” King-Lu tells his new pal, and its unclear if their presence represents an opportunity or a threat. “First Cow” has been adapted from “The Half-Life, ” a novel by Reichardts longtime collaborator John Raymond, who co-wrote the screenplay with her. Raymonds novel, however, contrasted the frontier setting with a modern-day tale of friendship; by dropping that storyline, Reichardt allows the period backdrop to take on an inquisitive quality that interrogates the present without confronting it directly. William Tylers ebullient score draws out the gradual sense of possibility percolating through the empty scenery, and gives the story a sweeter quality than the melancholy dominating much of her work. It hovers in the ambition of its characters, setting up the emotional process they undergo when the reality of their scheme comes crashing into the pictures. Eventually, the pair run into problems with a wealthy British trade mogul (Toby Jones, relishing the part of an avaricious colonist) who hires them to bring some of their tasty biscuits over, not realizing theyve been stealing ingredients from his backyard to make them. This encounter sets the scene for a mesmerizing chase across the messy scenery, and a hypnotic encounter with indigenous peoples that serves as Reichardts latest trenchant reminder that someone else had this land first. But even here, Reichardt doesnt indict her wayward characters for falling prey to proto-capitalist impulses; instead, theyre victims of a universal struggle to find success and stability, and in the process they find each other. With a few more telling glances, “First Cow” might have turned the ballad of King-Lu and Cookie into the material for a homoerotic Western, but Reichardt doesnt force that context onto material with broader intentions for its characters. Magaro buries himself in the role of a lonely introvert a world apart from his more conventional turns on “Orange is the New Black” and in “Carol, ” crafting a tender figure whose understated nature makes it all too easy for others to impose their agenda onto him. Lee, meanwhile, inhabits a mysterious figure at odds with his foreign identity, with a sneaky grin that hides big plans that never quite come to fruition. King-Lu and Cookie need each other not only to survive but to bond over that very same need, and “First Cow” commiserates with their journey in a kind-hearted fashion that allows the movie to resonate with more warmth than it initially lets on. As with all of her work, Reichardt communes with the notion that even reckless people simply want to find meaning in their small corners of existence, and the last three words of the story ? “Ive got you” ? have a cathartic power that suggests no victory can be greater than companionship itself.
