Sometimes it doesn't come at all I only know that when I'm in it It isn't silly, no, it isn't silly, love isn't silly at all. These words, from Paul McCartney's 'Silly Love Songs' seem to me to be a very accurate description of the theme of 'When Harry Met Sally. This iconic romantic comedy, written by Nora Ephron, is, for me, one of the most insightful comments on the place of love in the post-60s world. It charts the way that acquaintance can turn into friendship and then into love. Harry (Billy Crystal) encounters Sally (Meg Ryan) on a long car journey during which they both seem to decide that the other is obnoxious in one way or another. Their path to love is funny, totally engaging and ultimately unforgettable. One of the greatest - no THE greatest - characteristic of the cinema is its ability to access our deepest emotions. How many times do we weep cathartically in our normal lives - most of us, not many. Yet there are dozens of films that induce just this kind of reaction. How many times do we laugh so much that we ache - very rarely outside a cinema, but often within. How many times are we so scared that we cannot move - almost never in life, but often in the cinema. And these emotions cannot be accessed in the same way through any other art. And there are laughs and tears galore in 'When Harry Met Sally. Why? Because we really *care* for these kooky characters, and the love that they find has a kind of purity that our loves struggle to emulate. For some people (and I feel sorry for them) films that induce a warm feeling of pleasure are sentimental and worthless. They should avoid this film as it might undermine their sterile cynicism. But if you trust your emotions and regard them as your greatest asset, When Harry Met Sally' will be one of the most worthwhile films of the modern era.

Started: 2019-01-10 Watched: 2019-04-27 Dante's Peak tells the story of Harry Dalton, a traumatized volcanologist, sent to investigate seismic activity around Dante's peak. One of the numerous disaster movies of the 90s and early 2000s. With the plot centering around a volcano, we get to see beautiful shots of nature, lakes and mountain, accompanied by a score that magnifies the action on screen. And with James Bond and Sarah Connor as leading actors, the movie promised to be interesting. The people behind this movie spared no expense. But since the movies takes as a "realistic" approach to disaster, very little of their action chops are put to contribution. In particular, Linda Hamilton is passive throughout most of the movie even though she is the most familiar with Dante's peak and its region. While it is true that she has to spend much of her time caring for her children who keep getting themselves into dangerous situations, a more decisive role would have been interesting. Plot-wise, the movie is really simple and easy to follow. Most of it is easy to predict and you can pretty much guess who is going to make it by the end. However the end was very anticlimactic and weird. After all the bravery the characters showed and the hardships they went through, they have to rely on the rescue teams to pull them out. I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie even though I had a general idea of what the story was. I was especially surprised with how much space was left to Harry's growth. However, it is a shame Sally's journey does not benefit from the same attention. Even though she starts in a more grounded place,. We got to see Harry give up on his cynical view of the world to grow into someone more accepting of people and life in general, some more room for Sally's journey would have been nicer. Everyone in the cast is great and the pacing of the movie is great. The end is unsurprising but still very satisfying. I will probably return to that movie soon. 8/10 Watched: 2019-04-29 Avengers: Endgame picks up right after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and gives a very satisfying end to the Infinity war saga. Realizing just how much time of my life I had spent watching movies and derivatives from the MCU, I was glad the directors put just the right amount of fan service to "reward" all of the time invested in the franchise. The announced runtime had me scared a bit but they really managed to cram all that was needed in the movie while avoiding fillers. The aftermath of Infinity War is not just swept under the rug but given significant consideration allowing the characters to grieve, recompose themselves and start fighting again. The action that follows is really a payoff for all the connections that were built in the MCU. It is going to be tough for the next movies to seem as important to the franchise as Endgame was but I am still looking forward to Spiderman Far From Home. 8/10 (probably a 6/10 if the movie was to be seen without the background) Watched: 2019-05-05 Ready Player One is everything I feared. It relies way too much on nostalgia by flashing all the licenses it could afford. I am really curious to know if younger people, that may have grown up without these references, enjoy the movie. Because from what the movie shows, it seems that in the future teenagers barely appreciate anything made after! 990. So to make up for it, the characters have to do some over-exposition to present the references to those who are not familiar. This make the hero and his friends sound like people you would meet at a party who would systematically interrupt you when bringing up a new topic of conversation in order to show you that they know more and better than you. I also find it funny that the economics of running the resource intensive Oasis are not at all mentioned in the movie who really operates it and how come such a company could let its deranged founder install an easter egg, that is literally an egg, to give away the keys to the kingdom. If you have not seen the movie yet, do yourself a favor and have a look at The shining sequence which is the only saving grace of the movie. 4/10 Watched: 2019-05-11 Creed II picks up right after Creed where Adonis has just earned the title of heavyweight champion boxing and is challenged by Viktor Drago, son of Ivan Drago. I was really looking forward to catching that movie (part of the reason why I caught up with all the movies in the Rocky franchise at the beginning of the year) but somehow I couldn't get to the cinema in time to watch it. Just like Rocky II, the movie picks up at a time where the challenge posed to the main protagonist seems to go further than they ever hoped for (with the addition of it being personal). But unlike in Rocky II, the movie does not focus on the main protagonist dealing with his new wealth and new social status. Adonis and fairly well-off before the first half of the movie and mostly chooses to live a spartan life for training purposes. Like I mentioned in my review of Rocky II and IV, it is mostly the dramatic changes in the protagonists' lives that give most of the movie its appeal. Same goes for the training montages that are not half as powerful as they were in the first Creed. He is already the heavyweight champion and even if he has to rebuild himself half way through the story, the challenge does not seem impossible. Adonis is not as technically challenged as Rocky was and does not need to develop a cunning plan to beat his opponent. The strong point of the movie is in the casting with a good set of actors presented in the first Creed movie and the return of Dolph Lundgren. The fights are still be beautifully shot and the cost 6/10 Watched: 2019-05-12 Behind The Curve is a fascinating documentary on flat earthers. It manages to show them in the variety of life settings and systems of beliefs. From the bored contrarian who finds out about flat earth theories by browsing library to the full-on conspiracy theorist who manage to link every known conspiracy. But the most tragic and heart warming characters are the ones who keep on trying to prove their theory using the "scientific method". I also like that it shows the scientific community realizing that it does not suffice to show wrong flat earthers are but how they must be approached to change their mind. 8/10.

This film has become iconic, in part for the scene of Sally "faking it" and for its bigger question: can a man and a woman be strictly friends? The answer is one that is open to debate, but no movie is better known for tackling the subject than this one is. And does it answer the question? Well, you have to watch the movie. We cannot give that away. But, unfortunately, despite being a Rob Reiner comedy, it tends to get a bit too close to the "romantic comedy" no doubt because of Nora Ephron's script. This may make it more divisive and less enjoyable a watch for men.

As a film student I'm constantly coming across "must see films" which I haven't got around to watching yet, or I find myself in a situation where I get asked "how have you not seen [name of film]; don't you study film? ". I've also always found it hard to retain the large amount of information and history that comes with film study. I decided the best way to ensure I better retained all of this information wasn't to continue what I was doing which was trying to take it in from lectures, books and other resources whilst watching films in a non-linear fashion; but to try and approximate, as best I could, a linear experience of film history. I decided the best way to approximate this linear-experience would probably be best achieved by watching 100 films from each decade. By doing so, I would be able to not only ensure to cross off a lot of films I've never seen before, but I would also be able to better remember the people, the history of film. Granted there a number of issues you could take with my list; and in no way to I claim this to ultimate list of films. For instance my list only starts in 1950 skipping the Silent Era and the Hollywood Golden Age. Secondly it's extremely English-language orientated, with a very significant majority being American; meaning a lot of very very important film movements from across the globe have been skipped entirely. There are obviously going to be more issues as well, and you might feel I've missed some very important films in the process of creating this list; however I've done my best to take 100 films from every decade from the 50s until now which will provide a great deal of context and hopefully be very entertaining and rewarding. I'm fairly certain this list will be beneficial to many, especially those who are just becoming interested in film and its history. It can be further distilled and shaped and used to create other lists, so have fun with it.
