That was when I lost my son. His name was James and he was seven years old. My life wasn’t good before that either, I cleaned rich people's houses for next to nothing, but at least I had my little boy. As long as I had him, I felt just as rich as the people I cleaned for. James was such a big part of my life that after I lost him, I lost myself. The day I lost him was perfectly normal. One of those days you wouldn’t remember. We were at the grocery store. I left my son in the line to the cashier to get something I had forgotten. And when I came back he was gone. No one had seen anything, and the CCTV had apparently been out of function for weeks. The police did what little they could. My son's face was on the local news for some time, but no one recognized him. He was simply gone. And so was my will to live. I wanted to kill myself, out of sorrow and guilt, but my depression made me so apathetic that I couldn’t even muster the strength to do that. Instead, my mind just shut down and I entered a form of self-destructive autopilot. I watched myself fall down… saw myself tend to my basic needs ? eating, drinking, sleeping ? without caring about anything else. Before I lost my job one of the house owners who listened to my story offered to “help” me by giving me a job that would pay more for less work. I didn’t have any self-worth. My autopilot, capable of nothing more than the minimum effort to survive, accepted the offer. So I watched myself fall… I saw myself get dressed up, get out of my tiny apartment, stand at the side of the street. It is a big city, my new employer used to say, and it is thirsty. For five years, I watch myself fall without a care in the world. There was something strange in the air that night at the end of 1997, something that made me tense up. For the first time in a long time, it felt as if I was watched by someone other than myself. And I didn’t like it. It felt wrong. My hair stood on end. My corner was next to a movie theatre. Starship Troopers was playing. A large group of people stood outside. I usually shied away from larger crowds when I worked, but this feeling ? this feeling of dread ? made me want to cross the street and ask them for a light, just to be near somebody. Before I made up my mind about it a black Cadillac DeVille with shaded windows slowly crawled up to me. “Another customer, ” I thought. “Rich one by the look of the car. ” A tall man stepped out from the passenger seat. “He has a chauffeur, ” I noted for myself indifferently. “Very rich then. Better up my prices. ” He was in his sixties, I think. Not the oldest one I had been with, but definitely somewhere up there. He wanted to shake my hand. “One of the polite ones, ” I thought. I could usually read them, see if they were married and bored or alone and desperate, if they were happy and careless or unhappy and caring or if they were submissive or dominant. But with this man… I usually didn’t view them as real men, so the fact that I want to use that word now is telling. He stood tall in front of me as a complete paradox. Courteous but intimidating, fatherly but hostile, alluring but repulsive ? a stranger but yet somehow familiar. My dead heart skipped a beat, and my voice trembled when I told him what I had to offer and for how much. “Yes, ” he said. “Poor girl, you must be freezing. ” Was he one of those who wanted to fall in love, just for the night? I still couldn’t tell. He had a thick dialect that I couldn’t place. “I want something rather unusual, ” he continued. A pervert? I wouldn’t have guessed, but I wasn’t surprised. “I don’t do weird shit, ” I said. Not that I cared that much, I just didn’t know how to act in those kinds of super contrived situations. I was a whore, not an actress. “Oh, ” he said seemingly disappointed. “Well, this is pretty weird I’m afraid. But I’m willing to pay a lot. ” I locked eyes with him. His face was kind, but a scar that crossed his eye made him look threatening at the same time. I thought about it for a second and said: “How much are we talking about? ” “Enough for you to never have to work in this profession again. ” I laughed. “Don’t be vague, give me a number. ” He smiled, but only with his mouth, and said: “Five hundred thousand dollars. ” I almost choked on my own spit. “For real?! ” With that kind of money, I could retire, have a life… Maybe even do something to help other people in my situation. Possibilities that I hadn’t even dared to dream about flashed in my mind. “For real, ” he said. He wouldn’t have offered me all that money if he didn’t want me to do something outrageous. Maybe he wanted me to do something illegal, something involving dead people, animals or… kids? Fuck that shit, I thought, no money in the world could make me do stuff like that. I hesitated for a moment and then I asked: “Well, what the hell is it you want me to do? ” He smiled again, hopeful. “I haven’t accepted yet, ” I added. “Why don’t we go for a ride and I’ll try to explain. ” “I can tell you right away that I’m not doing anything sick, like some pedo-stuff or?“ The man laughed. “No, it’s nothing like that. That’s horrible. ” “You have my curiosity then…” I said with a skeptic look. He opened the door to the car and held it open for me. “Please, ” he said. “If you don’t feel up to it after I’ve told you, I’ll understand and let you off where ever you want. ” The man sat down next to me in the passenger seat. I buckled up. The driver never turned around to greet me. He was a dark silhouette against the traffic lights ahead. As he slowly drove away from my little corner of the street, the man cleared his throat and began speaking: “I’ll not be able to tell you the exact details, but I can promise you that you won’t need to do anything disturbing… At least not in the way you suggested. ” “You can’t tell me or you don’t want to tell me? ” I asked. He looked unsure, like he actually couldn’t tell me, and said: “Does it matter? ” “Well, what can you tell me? ” He looked at his knees as if preparing himself to reveal a secret he’s been carrying around for a long time. “It isn’t that complicated. When we arrive at our destination, I’m going to give you a set of new clothes. When you’ve put them on, I’ll ask you to enter a building. I’ll meet you inside of it, and after that… I can’t tell you what will happen, but you’ll understand what to do. I can promise you that. ” The feeling from earlier, the feeling of something being off, came back. Was I being lured into some kind of trap? But why this weird charade? It was easy to murder me. I wouldn’t even resist. Maybe he wanted to torture me, keep me as some kind of slave. I shrugged at the thought of it. I couldn’t make heads or tales of any of this. “You promise it’s not illegal? ” I asked even though I had no reason to trust him whatever he said. “And that I won’t be harmed? ” “It’s nothing illegal, ” he said. Thirty minutes later, the car stopped. The man sighted ? I couldn’t tell if it was from relief or despair ? and opened the door. “We are here, ” he said. We stepped out on the yard of an abandoned, run-down school. I hadn’t been here before, but given the cityscape in the background, I could tell it was south of the city and therefore most likely in one of the poor neighborhoods. Heavy snowflakes came down from the sky, painted orange by the street lights. I heard the man open the trunk of his car as I stared at the empty school building. A sadness came over me, the same kind of sadness that always came over me when I saw something that had to do with children. It reminded me of James. “Here are the clothes, ” the man said. “Are you ready? ” “S-sure, ” I stuttered. The way I saw it, both the worst-case scenario and the best-case scenario seemed equally appealing to me. “You can change inside the car. My driver will step outside. ” I took the clothes and returned to the car. The driver got out without being explicitly told to do so. It didn’t make me feel any safer. “I guess he wants me to play dress up games, ” I thought as I looked through the clothes. It was some kind of uniform, with black leather boots and a peaked cap to go. It had a yellowish color, and a large eagle spreading its wings on the chest and at the front of the cap. While I put everything on, I felt relieved that it had all been about some kind of fetish. The man was clearly insane, paying me so much for some weird dominatrix role play. The yellow coat was a bit too large for me, but other than that the uniform fitted me perfectly. As soon as I exited the car I felt somewhat embarrassed wearing these ridiculous clothes. The driver hurried inside the car again. “Wonderful, ” the man said. “Is it comfortable? ” “At least it helps against the cold, ” I said. “What is it, some kind of nazi uniform? ” “You’re thinking about the eagle? ” he said. “It’s not what you think. That’s the Faravahar. ” “The what? ” “It doesn’t matter, ” he said. “All you need to do now is to enter the door to the school. I’ll meet you on the other side. ” “And then you’ll give me half a million? ” I asked. “Yes, or… do you need more? ” “Um… no, or I mean?“ “I’ll give you what you need, don’t worry. ” “Do-do you want me to order you around in there and?“ “Something like that, ” he said. I took a step toward the school. “Wait, ” the man said. “There is one thing you need to know before you go inside. ” “Uh-uh? ” “It's an address. ” He gave me a piece of paper. I looked at it.

[ first] [ prev] [ First Appearance] [ Last Appearance] [next] Nakteti held tight to Major Carnight's arm as the shuttle shuddered going through the storm clouds. She kept her eyes squeezed shut, attuned to every vibration of the frame, every change of pitch from the engines, the booming of atmosphere super-heated by the passage of gigawatts of electricity expanding then collapsing. She could smell the humans around her, none of them the slightest bit concerned as the shuttle vibrated in response to narrowly being missed by enough electricity to power a city superheating the air which cooled instantly and collapsed back into itself, causing a sonic clap that she knew could probably be heard for miles. Worse yet was this was apparently allowed by the weather controlling mechanism around the planet. She still remembered how beautiful the planet was from orbit, though. The shuttle plunged through the clouds and into gray air that was filled with precipitation. "Mommy! A rainbow! " an immature human female squealed out. "Mommy, look! Mommy! " Without meaning to Nakteti turned and looked out the window to see what the child was squeaking about and stared. A trick of TerraSol's energetic yellow star, the atmosphere, the drops of liquid H20 that had formed around microscopic dust or ice crystals, all combined to throw a rippling, pulsating arc of prismatic light through the gray sky. She gasped, her eyes able to see additional colors than humans. She was mesmerized by the way it rippled, the amount of colors that shimmered, the way it seemed to sweep along with the shuttle. The scientific part of her mind just told her it was atmospheric projection of prismatic light generated by near-white light through the drops of water, but that part was stilled in wonder at watching it. Electricity flickered through the clouds, massive bolts, blue in color with white edges, streaming from different clouds to connect and then jump to the ground. She gasped, her fear forgotten by the sight. Even the sonic rumble that shook the shuttle didn't bother her as she watched the lightning flicker in the clouds. Their magnetic field is so strong it creates opposing charges between the atmosphere and the ground, Nakteti remembered from her briefing. A wild, savage planet. The being she held onto, Major Carnight, was the product of this crazed ecosystem and maddened planet, yet every time she was distressed he would hold her, applying the correct pressure so that her distress would lessen. In many ways he reminded Nakteti of the planet she was heading toward the surface of. Dangerous, powerful enough to tear her apart with no effort but comforting and solid, easing her distress with the very bulk and power that could kill. There was a ping on her implant, the updated one fresh enough that it still itched slightly, the skin around it still slightly pink. The shuttle was about to land. The new datalink implant wasn't the only thing. The inside of her thigh still itched where the humans had put a 'biocleanser' into her leg. It was attached to the main artery, able to filter out everything from prions to almost visible to the naked eye debris. Designed to break down anything foreign into base proteins to allow her organs to just process the remains. A simple device, that she'd watched the complex 3D printer creation engine in the medical bay print out. That her own medical officer had stared at the template and how it worked, clenching and unclenching her hands in fury. "It's so simple. The math, the tech, is right there and obvious to anyone! Imagine how many lives this simple blood cleanser implant would save every year! " she had cursed. "I could have built this, anyone could have built this, if we'd just been allowed to think of it. " There was a sudden deceleration that made both of her stomachs drop to her toes and pulled her from the memory. The immature female human went "WHEEE! " and threw her hands in the air. Nakteti managed to not throw up, even though she turned and grabbed Major Carnight's arm with all four hands. The shuttle landed with a bump, it settled deeply then lifted slightly, making both of her stomachs bobble in her abdomen. She held onto Major Carnight as the other humans got to their feet and slowly left the shuttle. "Teddy! " a small immature human female, still small enough the mother held it close to her body, blurted out, reaching for Nakteti. The little hands, still strong looking, opened and closed. When the mother kept moving the small human started crying as if her heart would break. "She thought you were a stuffy, " Major Carnight said. "I hope that didn't offend you. " That made Nakteti giggle, covering her mouth with one of her catching hands. "No. No, it doesn't. " More humans walked past, some glancing, some staring at something provided by their implant that only they could see, others obviously focused on a task they needed to complete. Nakteti just watched them all leave, until finally they were the only ones left. "Are you ready? Despite personal space, it's going to be crowded, " Major Carnight told her. Nakteti nodded. She held onto the Major's thick arm as they left the shuttle, walking down the connecting tube, and into the concourse. Staring around her, Nakteti grasped. While her own species was used to crowding, bumping and touching each other, what she saw amazed her. Humans moving together, in streams, pooling near eateries, where luggage came out on anti-grav conveyors, or just, to Nakteti's eyes, random spots in the massive concourse. She held tight to him as they went down two sets of moving stairs, got a lift-cart, and moved to the luggage conveyor. As they stood there an elderly human woman, the hair on her head gray, her face lined and wrinkled, looked up at Major Carnight. "Do you have family with the Sleeping Ones, Major? " the old woman asked. "Yes, ma'am, but that's not why I'm here, " Major Carnight answered. "Oh, is it to show your guest around? " the woman nodded at Nakteti. "Yes, ma'am, it is, " Carnight answered. The old woman reached forward, grabbing a trundle, its own levitation systems kicking in as soon as it left the conveyor. She looked at Major Carnight and nodded. "Carry on, Major, and Fight the 13th, " she said. Major Carnight jerked slightly, looking at the old woman as she began to move away. "Old Blood, ma'am. " Nakteti looked up at the surprised expression on the Major's face. "What? " "It's easy to forget that people who have chosen to age have lived a long life, " he said, shaking his head. "Just, preconceptions from being effectively immortal. " Nakteti clenched her jaw at that. The humans had apparently fought and, for the most part, defeated death. The SUDS at the base of their skull kept a constant recording of their mental engrams, thought patterns, even a molecular map of their neural tissue. It was even backed up through quantum entangling with "Master SUDS Arrays" all over human space. Even if their body was completely destroyed, their mastery of cloning technology let them grow a new body identical to the old one or to specification. Apparently humans were capable of living centuries before they started suffering mental engrams, and with software, firmware, and wetware advanced, the lifespan was being pushed forward all the time. Apparently, before that, they had managed to achieve immortality through removing the brain and keeping it under constant repair through nanite infused nutrigel with cybernetic implants to fool the brain into thinking there was a body there. Those were, as far as Major Carnight told her, mostly gone. Slowly succumbing to inevitable decay. She felt a surge of jealousy. The humans had evolved after a life extinction event, the fourth or fifth their planet had suffered, clawed their way to supremacy on a resource poor world, and had achieved what was basically immortality without anyone's help. Had beaten the resource problem, becoming a society where time and imagination and personal effort was worth more than any mere chunk of elemental ore or isotopes. She squeezed Major Carnight's arm tighter, closing her eyes and doing her best to push away her jealousy. If my people hadn't been found by the Lanaktallans, by the Overseers, what would we have accomplished? What greatness could have we discovered? she thought to herself. Their 'help' was little more than slave chains to keep us bound to their machines. Finally their luggage showed up. Well, the small tote she was carrying. The Major didn't seem to need one but had suggested that Nakteti carry any mementos she felt like carrying. Nakteti had chosen to take a blanket, a comfort gripper, and a couple changes of clothing. They all fit in a small tote, which the big human picked up. They stopped by a few shops on the way, so Nakteti could purchase a few gifts and mementos of coming here. It was in one shop she stopped, looking at a transparent brick of some kind of material, with the image of a human slightly curled, inside. It marked "Sleeping One" on the shelf. She looked up at Major Carnight, who was waiting for her to finish shopping. "What is this? " She asked. Major Carnight looked at the block and sighed. "Its for you to buy to remember family members. From a long time ago, " The Major said. Nakteti could hear the slight pain in his voice. "Do you have one? " she asked. He nodded slowly. "A maternal line relative. A many times great grand-mother, " he said. He looked away, at the side of the store. Nakteti noticed the muscles on his jaw were clenched and dropped the line of inquiry. They walked out of the concourse, out to a covered walk. There was a gray limousine waiting for them with two armed guards in military uniforms standing beside the vehicle. The

The Kindness of Strangers Synopsis Clara and her two sons escape from her abusive husband with little more than their car and plan to start over in New York. After the car towed away, the family meets Alice, who gets them into an emergency shelter. While stealing food at a Russian restaurant called ‘Winter Palace’, Clara meets Marc, who has been given the chance to help the old eatery regain its former glory. The ‘Winter Palace’ soon becomes a place of unexpected encounters between people who are all undergoing some sort of crisis and whom fate has now brought together. Cast Crew Details Genre Director Producers Writer Editor Cinematography Production Design Composer Costumes Studios Countries Language Alternative Titles Доброта от непознати, Uprzejmosc nieznajomych Popular reviews More New York can be an unforgiving city, even in the best of circumstances. Unfortunately for the awkward patchwork of characters who populate Lone Scherfig’s listless new melodrama, “The Kindness of Strangers” does not take place in the best of circumstances. Everyone in the film is lost and lonely in one way or another; everyone is either helpless or guilty; everyone is either about to hit bottom, or beginning to claw their way out of a hole that’s too deep to escape without some assistance. The young mother whose story provides the spine of this underdeveloped mosaic, is somehow all of those things at once. Played by a tender and compellingly frayed Zoe Kazan, Clara opens the story in the pre-dawn… 40/100 The film exposes its theme, but only that. It feels so empty that it can't compensate for the cast's attempts to make the story more convincing and the message is right there, exposed simply to the public and surprisingly it doesn't feel moralistic but it does feels unrealistic and absurd, and what's left isn't not enough to hold the entire film because you just don't get anything worth remembering. Zoe Kazan deserves better!! What an odd film. An ensemble drama about distraught, lonely people (in New York City) who show a tiny bit of kindness because everyone else is selfish/careless. Every scene in this film is so awkward, so cliche. What a let down. I get it, kindness is rare. But ugh. I wanted to like this so much but it's really, really not good. And so obvious. yeah it was just boring. The movie breaks the 180 rule a lot. No real reason too, and it looked weird. The characters were all portrayed as flawless saints, or evil pricks. If you want to make a film about how real life can suck for people, make the characters realistic. Finally there's Jeff. Jeff is very clearly mentally ill. He has issues. When we first see Jeff, he violently throws a chair out of a window with no regard for what it might hit. Jeff should not have been the comic relief character. He should not have been a character to laugh at. But hey, why not? Another one that had a ton of potential that just kind of landed flat. It had some moments and some good acting but was just "ok" as a total. Recent reviews This film was so so so painful to watch. It has a similar structure to Love Actually (also featuring Bill Nighy and Emma Thompson), but fails to have any real takeaway. It claims to be a heartfelt story, but it's hard to feel bad for any of the characters when they are actively making poor choices - I blame this on the horrendous writing of the film. The mother (played by the lovely Zoe Kazan) leaves her children in libraries and alleyways, forgets food, and remains a clueless "housewife" for most of the film. The subject matter is very intense and real, but the execution is offensive and absolutely horrible to watch. The acting was bad, the jokes were bad, it Looked Awful, and the character structure is beyond unrealistic and disappointing. Personally, I found Alice to be the only redeeming character, but even that is a stretch. Do yourself a favor, and skip out on this film. If you want to see a film about a bunch of depressed people with depressing lives doing things that make you feel depressed, then knock yourself out. kinda expected to a point *sorry* i appreciate the idea, the culture of being a nice stranger that they were trying to hype, but in a way, it could have done more, be a bit more structured Ειλικρινά όμως, ο Παπακαλιάτης θα το έκανε πολύ πολύ πολύ καλύτερα. A lot better than people would have you believe. Shortly after the beginning of “The Kindness of Strangers” we see Zoe Kazan’s heroine ? a loveable big-eyed woman who’d just ran away with two sons from a violent husband ? pointing a finger up front and saying to her boys that over there is Manhattan, a place they’ve always wanted to visit. We hear hope and joy in her voice, and see the tops of skyscrapers glowing in a soft morning sunlight somewhere far away from them, behind the lines of indistinguishable cars and immense concrete piles. It’s a beautiful scene, which sets well the tone for the story to follow: the happiness is around the corner, and dog days will soon be over thanks to love and support… People living in the big city, especially NY, are so cruel to one another, but those who experienced cruelty from others are so kind to one another. Is that all what Scherfig wants to say? Popular Lists More.
