Or both at the same time. Brisbane's entertainment scene has so much to offer these days. Opera, ballet and theatre on the big screen has allowed us to share experiences from New York, Milan and London. Now the Dendy Portside presents three Kenneth Branagh productions from the Garrick Theatre, London ? The Winter's Tale, Romeo and Juliet, and The Entertainer. Initially, The Winter's Tale begins with a Dickensian Christmas, with Branagh's Leontes playing with his young son, and rejoicing in the company of his friend, Polixenes. But jealousy intrudes, as the friendship between Polixenes and Leontes' wife Hermione becomes a double irritant for Leontes ? the possible loss of a friend, and the apparent infidelity of his wife. Despite all of his closest advisors telling him that his suspicions are groundless, Leontes will not be told, thereby, through a major misjudgement, setting in place disastrous consequences. Shakespeare often writes about how the decisions of the powerful affect whole communities, and this play explores the themes of abuse of power, and the nature and extent of forgiveness. Judi Dench plays the role of Paulina not as a shrill shrew, as often is the case, but as an unflinching and courageous teller of truth to power. Her performance alone makes this performance memorable. Rarely has one seen unflinching integrity and loyalty so convincingly portrayed. Branagh's nuanced depiction of an honourable and well-meaning man who is betrayed by a character flaw makes us want to warm to him as well, despite his disastrous misjudgements. Miranda Raison's Hermione gives strength and life to a character who could so easily have been a cardboard cut-out of wounded virtue. Jessie Buckley's Perdita lends a sensual joie de vivre to Leontes's exiled daughter. Given that The Winter's Tale is one of the lesser known plays of the bard, we should be careful to avoid spoilers. Suffice it to say that (as one might expect) Branagh's production explores many facets of human nature ? warmth and loyalty and courage, tragedy and the cost of flawed decisions, hurt and remorse, and the strengths and limitations of repentance and reconciliation. Once again as with most of Shakespeare's plays, he gives us a world more complex than we can take in, and emotions which ring true and deep. This is a great play, superbly directed and performed.
Beautiful. A jealous king, an abandoned daughter, a prince hopelessly in love. Shakespeare's timeless tragicomedy of obsession and redemption is reimagined in a new production co-directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh. It was performed as part of the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company's Plays at the Garrick Season in 2015, starring Judi Dench and Kenneth Branagh. A bit too much yawping and shrieking to my taste at times, but overall it was a great performance, kudos to you all guys?. Excellent production. Mostly benign hahaha seriously had me cracking. T he image of the West End suddenly brightens with the arrival of a six-play Kenneth Branagh season lasting a year. But, although Branagh stars in four of the productions and is involved in directing three of them, this feels like a company venture rather than an actor-manager ego-trip. At first, it looks as if we are in for a romantic reading of The Winter’s Tale, co-directed by Rob Ashford and Branagh. We are, in Christopher Oram’s design, at a Christmas court full of snowflakes, carols and cheerful festivity, where everyone sits down to watch a home movie of the king, Leontes, and his chum Polixenes in their romping boyhood. But there are strong hints that Branagh’s fine Leontes is driven less by insane jealousy over his wife’s possible adultery than by the loss of Polixenes’s love. Hadley Fraser’s Polixenes refers to women as “temptations”, while Branagh himself spits out words like “sluiced” and “slippery” as if disgusted by female sexuality and eagerly kisses his male courtiers. The implication is that this is a man still haunted by an idyllic boyhood attachment. That is only one of several intriguing touches in what superficially looks like an orthodox production. Judi Dench plays the truth-telling Paulina not as the usual angry scold but as a woman whose capacity for defiance masks a deep compassion for wayward humanity: the moment I shall long remember from this production is when Dench, having regretted her verbal rashness, gazes at Branagh’s shrunken, guilt-ridden Leontes with a silent sorrow. Fertility rite … Tom Bateman as Doricles/Florizel and Jessie Buckley as Perdita in The Winter’s Tale. Photograph: Johan Persson/Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company/Garrick Even the rustic scenes in Bohemia, translated over the years to everything from a hippie Haight-Ashbury to Glastonbury, are here played as a decidedly east European fertility rite where the male shepherds strip as they dance and where Jessie Buckley’s Perdita positively glows with erotic fervour. Although this production ends, unfashionably, in unequivocal forgiveness, it is not afraid to hint at the darker elements in Shakespeare’s fable. Branagh and Dench are surrounded by a first-rate team. Miranda Raison lends the wronged and persecuted Hermione a shining self-belief, Michael Pennington brings a lifetime’s Shakespearean experience to the role of the bear-pursued Antigonus and John Dagleish is a suitably nimble-fingered Autolycus. You go to see the stars and, in the words of a Sondheim song, in comes company. ? At Garrick, London, until 16 January. Box office: 0330 333 4811. Tickets available at Guardian box office. The Winter’s Tale will be broadcast live to cinemas on 26 November.

This critically acclaimed production was the first in the hugely successful Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live season that was broadcast to cinemas from London's Garrick Theatre over the course of a year in 2015. Dec 4, 2019 Special Events Cast & Crew Kenneth Branagh Actor Kenneth Charles Branagh was born on December 10, 1960, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to parents William Branagh, a plumber and carpenter, and Frances (Harper), both born in 1930. He has two siblings, William Branagh, Jr. (born 1955) and Joyce Branagh (born 1970). When he was nine, his family escaped The Troubles by moving to Reading, Berkshire, England. At 23, Branagh joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he took on starring roles in "Henry V" and "Romeo and Juliet". He soon found the RSC too large and impersonal and formed his own, the Renaissance Theatre Company, which now counts Prince Charles as one of its royal patrons. At 29, he directed Henry V (1989), where he also co-starred with his then-wife, Emma Thompson. The film brought him Best Actor and Best Director Oscar nominations. In 1993, he brought Shakespeare to mainstream audiences again with his hit adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing (1993), which featured an all-star cast that included, among others, Denzel Washington, Michael Keaton and Keanu Reeves. At 30, he published his autobiography and, at 34, he directed and starred as "Victor Frankenstein" in the big-budget adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), with Robert De Niro as the monster himself. In 1996, Branagh wrote, directed and starred in a lavish adaptation of Hamlet (1996). His superb film acting work also includes a wide range of roles such as in Celebrity (1998), Wild Wild West (1999), The Road to El Dorado (2000), Valkyrie (2008) and his stunning portrayal of Laurence Olivier in My Week with Marilyn (2011), where once again he offered a great performance that was also nominated for an Academy Award. More Judi Dench Actor Dame Judi Dench was born Judith Olivia Dench in York, England, to Eleanora Olive (Jones), who was from Dublin, Ireland, and Reginald Arthur Dench, a doctor from Dorset, England. She attended Mount School in York, and studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She has performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, and at Old Vic Theatre. She is a ten-time BAFTA winner including Best Actress in a Comedy Series for A Fine Romance (1981) in which she appeared with her husband, Michael Williams, and Best Supporting Actress in A Handful of Dust (1988) and A Room with a View (1985). She received an ACE award for her performance in the television series Mr. and Mrs. Edgehill (1985). She was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1970, a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1988 and a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour (CH) in 2005. Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live: The Winter's Tale Synopsis A jealous king jeopardizes his family, friendships and succession. Cast Crew Details Genre Country Language Alternative Title Branagh Theatre Live: The Winter's Tale Popular reviews More Leontes: I am ashamed. Does not the stone rebuke me?For being more stone than it? Hard to believe I’ve made it to this age without encountering The Winter’s Tale, but I was not disappointed by the fruits of my wait. Somehow originally construed as a comedy, this is rather a drama with comic elements, a tumultuous and twisting tale of paranoia and penance, paradise lost and found within the magic of love itself. Rich in character and Shakespeare’s characteristic narrative tricksiness, the play’s individual acts seem somewhat discordant until the climax brings everything back together in a manner both profound and emotionally impactful in a way that few other Shakespearean works translate so well in the present day. Beautifully performed by all, and lavishly yet economically staged, this iteration of the Shakespeare classic seems to do due justice to the perennially revered Christmas time favourite of theatregoers the world over. The Winter's Tale is one of the Shakespeare plays I'm not familiar with, so I should qualify any flaws I find with this new live theatre broadcast. Possibly I might come out of another production enraptured by the Jeremy Kyle-ish paternity plotline that dominates the first three acts, but in this one it felt like set-up, spade-work to be done before the properly entrancing second half. Much of it is done better in other Shakespeare plays; Leontes's suspicion of his wife never becomes as rich and complex as the similar plotline in Othello, and the two rival kingdoms lack the edge of genuine hostility that darkens the edges of As You Like It. Again, this may just be this production. … Recent reviews The first half is not so good, kinda feels as if an amateur theatre company did the play. The actors are great, but Brannagh seems a little bit too much (not the good, Shakespearean way). First time seeing this and never heard about it before, so it was weird for me because it felt like a Shakespeare mashup from older plays. Regret to say, I almost fell came the second half that brought home the whole thing. The moment we are in the village and not with Brannagh and his people, the play starts to breathe. The well-known Shakespearean jokes and characters arrive and every actor does a terrific job, and I finally start to hope for the characters to succeed. In the end, it becomes a great Christmas play. Too bad I only saw it in January. I sure would have liked it better during the holidays. not technically a “film”?but i did see it in a theatre so.... just wanna say i love any story that ends with everyone holding hands and hugging! ken! hadley! monsieur bouc! it warmed my heart on a snowy day!! i am too dumb to understand shakespeare ? The first thing to negotiate is whether this is theatre or film: I put it firmly in film, especially as I saw an 'encore' money-making season in a distant country. The second is to deal with the big names - namely Branagh and Dench. I know Dench is deemed a national treasure, and people are quick to name her terrific, but I have to say she was about the 4th most used and interesting part; the success of the play comes down to Branagh in the first half, and the young couple and Camilo in the second. The conclusion involves Dench's Paulina, but no audiences should think Dench makes the show. Personally, I preferred the first half. Branagh does a… i thought it was really good when i watched it but then i watched cheek by jowl's production of the winter's tale and everything else pales in comparison..... sorry kenneth i still love you tho Сложно для меня заходит Шекспир.
