So the other day, I was wandering around Lothric Castle and grabbed the Ring of the Hunter when I realised that I didn't actually know that much about the Three (Or Four, depending on how you see it) Pillars of Lothric. Yes, we know their names and their general functions however I wanted to better understand the city of Lothric so I decided to research them and how Lothric as a society functioned and that's how I came to make this post. Without further ado; let's begin! (Warning! Long Lore Post) (Author's note - The City of Lothric will be referred to as 'Lothric', whilst Prince Lothric will be referenced to as ' Lothric' to try and avoid confusion) ~ The Royalty of Lothric The Royalty, as the ruling class, are certainly one of the most important parts of coming to understand the societal and political direction that Lothric as a city took. There are four individuals who hold a royal title, with two others said to be of royal blood whilst there are several other speculated to be connected to the royals. The King of Lothric was once a man known as Oceiros, however, he is no longer a man but rather some form of perverted dragon-kin that stemmed from his obsession with crystals and the power of dragons. The Queen of Lothric is known as the 'Princess of Sunlight' and whilst it has not been stated officially; I believe that this Queen is, in fact, Gwynevere as do quite a few others of this community, given that Gwynevere is the only other person to be called by this title 'Princess of Sunlight'. The children of the King and Queen were a pair of princes known as twins though the nature of their twinship will be discussed later on. Regardless, these princes were known as Lorian, the Elder Prince, slayer of the Demon Prince and brother to Lothric, the Younger Prince and "Last hope of his Line". We shall discuss what this title means in a moment but for now, we shall acknowledge those of Royal blood who bear no title of royalty. Firstly is Gertrude who was a daughter of the Queen however it is uncertain if she is a bastard child or a legitimate heir who was simply given no rank; Note that she does bear the rank of Prophet within the Angelic Faith of Lothric however we shall discuss their role in Lothric's society later. The second known child of royal blood is Ocelotte; Son of Oceiros and "child of dragons"; Meaning that Ocelotte must have been conceived after his father became dragonkin as the Queen is described as the child's mother (As if she was indeed Gwynevere, she held no draconic influence and as such the child must've come from his father's draconic nature). However, we can clearly see that this child is the object of veneration for Oceiros now as the Consumed King said, "he is all that I have". This implies to me that the Queen abandoned him as stated by Divine Blessing (To perhaps elope with Flaan if she is indeed Gwynevere), his sons have left him to wallow in his garden and hidden themselves away in Lothric's bedchamber near the Grand Archives and the only ones left actively concerning themselves with him are the blue-robed Cathedral Knights who appear to be standing guard over him; More on their role later. Now that the key figures of supreme authority have been established, we shall look at the societal goal or function of Lothric as a city and how it went about achieving this. The Purpose of Lothric It is said that "The Lothric bloodline was obsessed with creating a worthy heir" by Lothric's Cinders. This means that the royalty of Lothric placed its primary focus on the task of creating an ' Heir of Fire' who was strong enough of a contender to be able to link the first flame. This, in my mind, means that the city must have been established upon, in some way, the principles of the Way of White who seeks to keep the age of fire alit; Much like how the land of Londor appears to have been specifically made by the Sable Church in order to influence the course of history towards the coming of the Age of Dark. We can see influences of the Way of White in the priesthood of the castle however that organisation is one that we shall delve into in a later section. Now that we have established the purpose of Lothric, we can begin to look into how it seeks to achieve that aim. To me, this would mean that the royal family sought, for many generations, to give birth to a child of royal blood who they could then completely control the environment of and push towards the goal of linking the First Flame. I will explain how they went about doing this in just a moment but before I do I just want to state a mini theory or just speculative thought I had. I think that it was not a case of the city being named after the prince but rather that Lothric was named after the city; Much like how all Princesses of Hyrule are named 'Zelda' in order to fulfil the prophecy should Ganon ever arise in that Princesses' age. In many cultures, it is believed that the name a child is given has a strong influence on the path of their destiny or life; By naming the Prince of the age ' Lothric ' this is asserting to the child, that he is nothing but a part of the kingdom and has a role to serve. This serves in dehumanising him to himself in that aspect as he is no longer seen as an individual person but merely as a cog in the system; an important one at that, but still nothing more than something that has a purpose to fulfil to keep the machine (In this case, the world) going which is beneficial to Lothric's royalty as it makes more likely that the child will remain focused on their duty to the world instead of what they actually want to do themselves (The fact that Lothric has only ever worn the swaddling clothes that are literally bound in prayers enforces this further by restricting Lothric's autonomy and expression of self; Lorian wearing the armour handed down to him by the royal family also suggests this concept wasn't exclusive to Lothric himself). Anyways! Let's get back to the methods by which Lothric, went about achieving the aim of creating a worthy heir. The Beginning of Lothric We know Prince Lothric was "born into disease, a frail and dishevelled child". This could mean several things; firstly, it was often relatively common practice for the royalties of antiquity to seek to keep their bloodline pure and resorted to inbreeding and as such, the children often came out rather deformed such as the Egyptian Pharoah Tutankhamun or Charles II for instance. Lothric 's frailty could be a result of this given the obsession that the royals had with achieving a true heir however I don't believe this is the case as Lorian was considered to be a perfectly healthy prince who acted in the role of Knight and even slew the Demon Prince; A foe most worthy and mighty. As such, I believe Lothric's frailty was likely born out of simple bad luck, a cursed bloodline or perhaps Oceiros meddled with his son's nature during pregnancy in the name of his draconic research, as we can see he has done with his new son, Ocelotte. This idea is in relation to the fact that Lothric and his brother Lorian aside him, were afflicted by a curse that left the elder prince "mute and crippled". However, for now, we shall hold off on the subject of Lothric's curse as that is a discussion worthy of its own section. Instead, let us look at how Lothric was raised and how the Three Pillars of Lothric came into play here. The Raising of Lothric Lothric doesn't appear to have been raised in the traditional sense; As a baby, he was tended to not by his mother, but by the High Priestess of the time, Emma; It is said that "The High Priestess also served as the prince's wetnurse". The way this is phrased implies, to me at least, that this has always been the role of the High Priestess; to serve as wetnurse to the heir. This would also explain Emma's seemingly maternal protection of him by deception from the rampage of the Ashen One's quest to slay him as she misdirects us from him at first and later begs us not to kill him but to talk to him and convince him to take his throne in the Shrine. Here we see the influence of the First Pillar of Lothric on our dear prince; The High Priestesses. In the early stages of his childhood likely well into his adolescence, Lothric was educated as most children are. However, as far as we know, rather than being part of a school or academy, the royal prince instead supposedly took the First of the Scholars as a "private mentor". It is unknown whether this entails a mentorship that was known of by the public but the services were exclusive to Lothric or whether it was a mentorship that none knew of and was kept as a private affair. I am more inclined to believe the second interpretation given that it is said that the first of the scholars "doubted the linking of the fire" and was likely who inspired Lothric to follow the path he did; I cannot imagine the royalty of Lothric would want their prince, who they were preeming for the Flame, to be exposed to an influence that could steer him away from the path of sacrifice. Here we can see the influence of the Second Pillar of Lothric on our dear Prince; The Scholars. Surprisingly, Lothric doesn't appear to have had any strong influences from the Third Pillar; The Knights. From what I have been able to decipher, the Knights of Lothric were a rather practical 'pillar' of their society rather than a cultural one like the scholars or the clergy. We can see from the patrolling warriors that the Knights were more of a security force and jailers of criminals that ensured Lothric would be raised in safety rather than an active influential force on his life. It can be argued, perhaps, that it was one of the most significant factors of his character came from this pillar though not directly but rather through one particular knight; His brother, Knight Lorian who bears the title "Unyielding sword of Lothric's Prince".
