This movie and The Star is Born (1954) really showed off Judy's talent as a singer and as an actress when she became an adult. There are so many songs in this movie that are so memorable and loved by so many people. Besides Judy Garland, Margaret O'Brien as the young Tootie stole this movie with her incredibly funny acting. Margaret even received an Academy Award as a juvenile actress for this movie. I also like Margery Maim as their housekeeper and cook because she had so many funny lines. She was fantastic in the movie called The Women (1939) with Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. So here it is. "Meet Me in St. Louis" is about the Smith family that are living in St. Louis at the time of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition World's Fair in 1904. I don't find anything groundbreaking about this movie, because of the amount of praise it gets. Don't get me wrong, I like the movie but I don't think its a masterpiece or anything like that. For what it is, I think its fine and it is indeed watchable. The cast in this movie are good, especially for Judy Garland; although I like her more when she was in "The Wizard of Oz. " I do love the film's cinematography and its setting. I really do enjoy the atmosphere of St. Louis as you go on out and have a wonderful time. The movie is also well directed and well written. The movie itself is not really a Christmas movie, but at the end, it does somehow leave you that Christmas feeling as Garland sings wonderfully with the song "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas; the songs in the film are fine too. Again, there is nothing groundbreaking about it but I do think it is a fine relaxation of a movie as you just want to enjoy the atmosphere of St. Louis. So that is what I thought of "Meet Me in St. Louis, and I give it an 8 out of 10. People find some parts of this story hard to believe but some things I know to be very that generation, people could actually be dying and the doctors and family members would keep the truth from them. Also, I've been a Christian for almost 40 years and have seen generosity on the same level of Mr. Bogardus (and even greater. Don't be afraid to ask God for the Amazing. He longs to fulfill the dreams of His beloved children. I believe it actually delights God when we have enough faith to ask Him for the impossible. Finally, bitterness is a horrible prison to live in but praying for the person who has hurt you is a crucial first step to being freed from it. If you don't want to watch a film unless it is contemporary and realistic, you should give this a miss. If that's not the case, however, Meet Me in St. Louis is eminently worth watching. Yes, the setting and characterizations are completely idealized and even hokey, but the gorgeous Technicolor gives it a holiday card flavor and the acting is above reproach. The Christmas montage, beginning from Judy Garland's definitive rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and culminating in Margaret O'Brien's destruction of her beloved snowmen while sobbing hysterically, is an absolute classic. If you can watch this scene (especially knowing how Vincente Minelli evoked such an emotional response from O'Brien) and NOT be moved, this is probably not the right movie for you. Treat this film as if it were a greeting card: savor the bright colors and the sappiness, and don't look for deep meaning or symbolism. I was born 40 years to late and in the false country. Judy garland my favorite actress of all time! Beautiful! November 2018. I saw this film on my mother's recommendation, and my mother's recommendations are usually quite good. Not this time. Feh! This was a lousy movie. Allow me to proudly stand with the elite minority who see this film as dreck.

There's so much wrong with it, I hardly know where to start. The plot, if you can even call it that, is so paper thin and obvious as to be a joke. The *instant* that the father announces the move to New York, it is transparent exactly what's going to happen with that. I'm not one to try to out-think a movie while I'm watching it, I seldom pre-figure-out what's going to happen. But in this case, before the father was even done explaining the move, it was painfully obvious that the family would get all weepy about it and eventually he would relent. It was hardly even worth the trouble of going through the motions of carrying out that bit of "story. All the machinations with the two sisters' romances are ridiculous, because these women are *so* concerned about winning the affections of these absolute *nothings. I mean the male romantic objects are so bland, lifeless, ordinary, it's absolutely impossible to see what these women see in them. One of them has so little function in the movie he's more of a prop than a character. The other is, frankly, a wuss. That may be the worse romance, because Judy Garland's character is clearly made out to be the belle of the ball, who can get pretty much any man around that she wants. And yet all she wants is that nebish next door. Feh, and feh again! As a musical, I didn't find it particularly strong. For the most part, I found the songs ordinary and unmemorable. The title song is OK, I guess, if rather insipid. The only song I really liked was the rather famous one about the trolley, and even that one failed to score a bullseye, as I found it extremely odd to discover how much the lyrics of the song fail to line up with what's actually going on in the movie at the time. It comes off as rather slap- dash film-making. About the only place I can bestow praise is upon the performance of Margaret O'Brien. She certainly does a good job with the role she has, even if that role is a little disturbing. Even the movie's denouement comes off as weak. After all that build up and brouhaha about the amazing world's fair, when they actually get to it, it's pretty anticlimactic. We don't get to see much of anything so wonderful about the fair, yet we see the characters reacting with absolute rapture.
