Posted on Friday, February 21st, 2020 by Matthew Pope ’s Blood On Her Name is a blue-collar revenge thriller with one helluva hard nose compared to other glamorized action spectacles where consequences don’t matter. It’s homestyle, nasty survival storytelling rooted with family at its core and despair weighing heavy on the viewer’s chest. Jeremy Saulnier comparisons are apt, even if the brutality isn’t as gruesome. I was lucky enough to catch the film at last year’s Fantasia International Film Festival where Pope’s title played to much acclaim, including my full review that praises everything from the film’s unwashable grime to Bethany Anne Lind ’s pain-stricken performance. Today on /Film, we have an exclusive clip that gives you a taste of the kind of cyclical backwoods gut-punchery that awaits Lind’s independent mother. Blood on Her Name Clip What’s revealed is no spoiler, as the body Leigh Tiller (Lind) can be seen transporting turns up early within the film. A woman fending for herself left alone by a deadbeat criminal husband, now embroiled in a small-town catastrophe spread by townsfolk whispers. Leigh’s son Ryan ( Jared Ivers) is on parole, her father Richard ( Will Patton) is the town’s local lawman, and her decision could doom their family name. By decision, of course, I refer to her fit of self-defense that produces the film’s problem corpse. It’s about the transformation that Lind undergoes or lack thereof depending on your perspective. The way Pope nullifies our cinematic definitions of “good” and “evil” suggests that existence is far more complicated. Every character finds themselves propelled by motivations brought upon by another’s actions, all swirling together in this heartbreaking narrative about how it can feel like there’s no escaping circumstantial fate despite fighting tooth-and-nail. Lind the proverbial eye of this no-luck hurricane that leaves a battered and bashed trail in its wake. Blood On Her Name will be released on February 28, 2020, both in select theaters and available on VOD platforms. It’s my polite suggestion that you make this greasy-spoon slice of redemption a priority for the right movie night. Check out the full synopsis below: The dead body lies at her feet, its blood still draining onto the floor. It was an accident, borne of self-defense, but its discovery could have devastating consequences for local garage owner Leigh Tiller and her son. In a panic, Leigh decides to conceal the crime, cleaning the bloody scene and scrambling to dispose of the body. But can she actually disappear a man from the earth? from his family? leaving them forever wondering? As Leigh is torn between her primal instincts and tortured conscience she struggles to keep her sins hidden from her estranged father? a cop with a long history of moral compromise ? and from the keen-eyed girlfriend of the deceased. Blood On Her Name is a character-driven thriller that explores questions of guilt, moral identity, and the irrevocability of choices in the direst circumstances. Cool Posts From Around the Web:.
Blood on her name full movie. Leigh (Bethany Ann Lind) doesn't have much faith in the police. Her father was definitely corrupt (though still works as a cop); her estranged husband is in prison for stealing cars; her son is on probation after getting into a brutal fight with another teen. So when she accidently kills a man who came to her autoshop late one night, she has little reason to trust that the police would believe her when she would tell them she was acting in self-defense. So she decides to cover it up, and that leads her down a increasingly dangerous and psychologically damaging road. Blood on Her Name, the feature debut by Matthew Pope, co-written with Don Thompson, follows Leigh as she tries to keep house and family together, while trying to rid herself of the guilt of her crime. Combining social realism and crime thriller elements, the film is intimate and intense, focusing on Leigh's state of mind, the complicated logistics of a cover-up, and the inability to escape the cycle of brutality when you're from a particular socioeconomic class in a particular place. The film opens just a few moments after the killing; we never see exactly what happened, so have only what Leigh says, and what you learn of her character, to guess. And what happened seems to change slightly depending on Leigh's state of mind and who she tells. And her guilt is palpable and overwhelming, to the point of risking exposing herself to the victim's family. It builds scene-by-scene; the more she thinks about it, the more creeps into every part of her life, whether consciously or not. But her anlready endless-cycle of problems are amplified, and all her hard work to get herself and her son out of trouble, it would seem, has all been for naught. The working class of small-town America have little chance to improve their lives when they are constantly beset by the police, who never really trust them. All these pressure see Leigh unravel, making mistakes, and less able to function and control as everything gets taken away piece by piece. Pope turns the screws slowly and consistently. Even as she tries to put things rights, Leigh keeps making mistakes, and not necessarily stupid ones either; who among us would really know how to cover up a murder (even if it was self-defense), let alone keep the blackeness and guilt and remorse at bay? As we learn more about her past, we understand why Leigh hid the killing, even as her 'solution' looks to be worse than what she would have faced had she come clean. Lind gives a compelling performance as a woman who loses a piece of her sanity as someone finds each piece of the puzzle, especially in moments when her memories of childhood, and another coverup, rear their ugly head. When things finally and completely fall apart, the climax provides a painful but inevitable conclusion to Leigh's desperation and fumbling efforts to keep herself and her son on a better path. Blood on Her Name shows not only how most of us could never cope with a terrible crime, but how those already under the thumb of the system can likely never escape it. MOVIES 2:38 PM PDT 7/19/2019 by Courtesy of Fantasia A gritty tale of thwarted cover-ups and handed-down guilt. Matthew Pope's debut stars Bethany Anne Lind as a single mother with a fresh corpse to hide. Loosely related to dramas like Frozen River, in which the perils inherent to the working-class crime film are complicated by single motherhood, Matthew Pope's Blood on Her Name watches as a woman's attempt to rid herself of a dead body soon has her wishing she'd just called the cops on herself. A tense debut built around a compelling lead performance by Bethany Anne Lind, it benefits from a couple of graceful storytelling flourishes and a persuasive sense of character. Prospective distributors shouldn't take its Fantasia premiere as a sign that its audience is limited to genre die-hards. Leigh Tiller (Lind) runs a failing auto garage once owned by her now-incarcerated husband. Her widowed father Richard (Will Patton) is the town sheriff, but some rift between the two leaves Leigh fairly stranded in this isolated town; the closest thing she has to a friend may be Rey (Jimmy Gonzales), the only mechanic she's able to keep on payroll. But Rey's duties don't include dead-body disposal. The body is dead from the start. The movie will only explain how he got that way piecemeal over its running time, like a dishonest witness whose story can't hold up under cross-examination. What's clear immediately is that Leigh panics, and the first steps she takes to cover things up doom her to what follows ??if only because her humanity keeps her from behaving as a killer would: She has the dead man in a boat and is ready to toss him into a lake when the phone in his pocket chimes with voicemail. Turns out he has a son who's worried that he didn't come home last night. Leigh can't let him and the boy's mother spend their lives wondering if the man just ran off. She risks a lot to leave the body where they will find it; then, far from the evidence, she realizes she may have left bread crumbs that will lead back to her. Lind navigates an emotional minefield as Leigh spends the next day or two trying to dig herself out of this jam. There's her concern for her son Ryan (Jared Ivers), a teenager who's already on probation and may be headed toward his dad's fate; her resentment for the father she's forced to leave Ryan with; and her need to keep Rey from deducing why she's suddenly so irritable and secretive around the garage. In his smaller role, Gonzales stands out as the story's most morally uncompromised character; Rey wants to help before he knows what the problem is, and the actor projects a concern complicated by the things Rey accidentally oversees. (In between attempts to fix the mess she's in, Leigh does some illicit self-medicating. ) If Pope and Don M. Thompson's script is a little coy about how the man in the garage got himself dead, the parallel mystery of what lingers between Leigh and her father unfolds more gracefully. Pope offers nicely staged flashbacks, some drug-induced, in which Leigh witnesses childhood trauma from multiple perspectives. Leigh's present-tense problems may all trace back to her trying to protect others ??innocent bystanders, a dead man's loved ones, a son who may soon have two parents in prison. But when the film's title hints at an original sin responsible for all this grief, it's no misdirection.
