As a good friend of the late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, filmmaker Richard Lowenstein gets amazing, unprecedented access to home movies, personal recordings of Hutchence's thoughts when he was alive, and interviews with close friends and family of Hutchence.
The result is a wonderful and fitting tribute to a rock star whose music and charisma had a huge impact on his generation. People such as lover Kylie Minogue and manager Martha Troup speak in depth about what Hutchence was really like, and what drove him. The consensus is that he was an artist at heart - shy as a boy but a showman as an adult, who write his own lyrics and melodies and wanted to be famous, but who like so many before him, suffered the downsides of fame. Hutchence loved his parents, but the documentary shows how they had deep flaws, for which he forgave them eventually. The part I don't quite understand is about Hutchence's relationship with Paula Yates, and the circumstances that led to Hutchence's death in a Sydney hotel. There were some very messy circumstances, and I'm not sure this doco provides many insights, aside from suggesting that Hutchence was down because he agonised over the prospect of breaking up Yates and Bob Geldof, and thereby hurting their three daughters, which may have reminded Hutchence of the pain of his own parents' split. I don't know about that. But maybe we'll never know, because Yates and Hutchence are no longer with us. Hutchence and Yates were, as someone points out, bad influences on one another. Paula was a highly manipulative woman. She had her agenda and she made sure micheal was not going nowhere. Sick of controlling Bob and wasn't going to let the best looking man in rockn roll go. Think he just got caught up in it all and probably felt guilty and trapped by her. Seen this dynamic so many times. When a woman gets her claws into a man. Trouble brewing if both not on same page so to speak. He was a free spirit and Paula wanted to clip his wings. Nothing new. Happens a lot between couples only he had to play this out in public. I thought Paula was great but she did act very inappropriately at times especially the first interview with micheal. The Queen of seduction and micheal got caught in the honey trap. Rip micheal. Missed so much.

That's pretty much the only interesting thing about it. It adds nothing to the narrative nor the mythology of Michael Hutchence despite featuring voiceovers from former girlfriends and his manager. At the end of the day Tiger - Lily was a beautiful product of a very public ( take a look at the Big breakfast interviews) affair between Paula Yates and Michael Hutchence. After both her biological parents deaths Bob Geldof took the role of parent and father to a child that was conceived and born from a affair his ex wife had that ultimately ended the marriage and yet when she was orphaned he didnt hesitate in bringing her to join her sisters and him as a family. she has even taken his surname so I don't believe that he would leave her high and dry. she might not have her biological fathers money but she would be and continue to be well looked after and provided for.
