This film shows us a slightly more innocent time in terms of the idealized family, and took the audience of 1944 away from the troubles of both European and Pacific theatres as the second world war was coming to a conclusion, and the foundations of the Cold War were being laid.

The family is large, and weighty with estrogen. The token males are of course the father, the son who's barely visible in the entire film, and the grandfather who offers elderly wisdom and kindness not found in the immediate parent. In short, it's a chick-flick from the Golden Era of Hollywood, complete with a familiar backstage lined with Victorian homes. The film is a welcome sight for audiences who've had their share of high-budget teenage drivel that's been plastered on the screen the last 20 years. This film comes from a day and age when courting still commanded popular culture, and still held stalwart in said same culture. The faster paced life was not unknown, but properly shunned, and kept at a distance with ceremonial rituals designed to test the social mettle of suitors. Note the dancing scene, or the party scene, the eager yet restrained and conservative approach to two young hearts of the opposite sex approaching and testing one another. It gives a man confidence. I guess those days are still with us in some respect, but, it seems like they've all but vanished in a day and age when commitment means not getting divorced within the first five years of marriage. Back then it was a serious thing for a man to take a woman to his heart and home. It was a thing to be cherished and celebrated, not thrown into the popular den of sexual wolves. The sexual aspect was there, but it was held in a higher regard than it is today- a disposable commodity, which can only be detrimental to society. The focus was on the heart and feeling. From there all things are possible. The film focuses on the exploits of the daughters, but should draw laughs and "awwws" from both men and women. Judy Garland, the star, draws her share of attention and does not disappoint. What dude wouldn't fall for a girl like that? An idiot. True to Hollywood this film has a happy ending, but with a bit of a twist, as well as some religious symbolism at the end. No bullets, no bombs, no lurid shots of the female anatomy, this is definitely one for the ladies, but in my opinion it makes for a good date flick. Take your wife of many years out to the pictures again, and relive your courtship with this film.
