Im a bit confused as to how I can get access to Ultra HD tracks on the Amazon playlist through my 7011 using the HEOS app. I only seem to be able to play tracks by using Bluetooth using Airplay, accessed from the Amazon Music app on my iPad, which is of course limited to a lower 24/48 resolution. I rang Denon customer service this morning and they told me that at present you cant use the HEOS app to play Ultra HD tracks through the Marantz because Amazon havent provided that facility to Denon as yet. Denon told me that I would have to purchase one of the HEOS speaker range to do that (I understand Bluos are an alternative. Any advice would be gratefully received! They're talking nonsense. You can only access Amazon HD via the Heos app for your AVR. To be fair it is going direct from the Sonos into a Maramtz PM7300, no DAC, but it sounds very flat, no air at all, sound is just sat there between the speakers, and some of the tracks with a lot going on sound congested and a bit sharp. Playing the same tracks on Tidal through the same unit sound so much better. Playing the same tidal track through a Raspberry Pi with a Meridian Explorer 2 dac attached to it sound infinitely better than the Sonos as well. I know the sonos is pants, so grabbed it and plugged it into the Arcam in the other room, digital connection, and still the same, Amazon sounds pants, Tidal sounds great. So what can I use? What does the chromcast play at res wise? If there is an android app, hopefully someone is working on a build for the Raspberry Pi, that would be nice. #99 I've spent some hours myself A/B testing various resolution audio files a few years ago. I tested crunching down the bit depth down from 24 to 16, 12, 8. 8 bit represents the music better than you might think but is awful, 12 bit is actually almost perfect and 16 bit is perfect to the ear. 24 bit you can't hear a difference doing an instant A/B comparison. I did a similar test with reducing the sample rates from 96 to 44 to 22 to 11khz and 44khz is enough to reproduce the frequencies we can hear perfectly. You can read about one test I did here: FLAC or mp3, which download format? The engineers knew what they were doing with the 16/44 CD quality. My conclusion is that Amazon downloads and anything mp3 320 or better will sound perfect. The testing itself was fun but time consuming and exhausting! Knowing the result has saved me lots of time and money though! I still prefer FLAC for the gapless playback though and I wish Amazon would offer FLAC download. The reason I didn't buy Sonos is their lack of support for hi-res. So there may be some down-sampling going wrong somewhere in there. There is no point trying to play high resolution audio on a Sonos anyway. Unless they did add support retrospectively and I don't know about it but AFAIK it's baked into their hardware format. That said, having got equipment that does support hi-res music I found I can't hear the difference of anything above CD quality so you could say Sonos made the right choice not supporting it. You can tell the most between the Likes of Tidal & Spotify when using a decent DAP with a bit perfect player like UAPP and sensitive ear/headphones (SE846 in my case. On a PC Amazon HD plays perfectly even with 24/192 tracks. If you have a Hiby R5 DAP that will also do Amazon HD at track quality level not resampling like many Android devices do. Maybe your system doesn't do well with lower bitrate stuff.
