Very enjoyable drama about an couple whose marriage is strained and break up and the effects on each and their grown son. Some humour but a serious film. Performances are first class and as usual Annette Bening is outstanding. John O'Connor (Gods Own Country) also is a stand out. So excited to watch it ?????? love love ??. In a lot of ways Hope Gap is a deeply hipster love story, despite the fact that the couple is in their late 50s/early 60s and their young adult son is not a hipster. Annette Bening feels everything really, really hard, the emotional equivalent of a middle schooler dropping acid for the first time, while Bill Nighy’s Edward is a fumbling, bumbling man of few words, whose emotional intelligence is not quite adequate to explain what he sees as the true source of his own unhappiness and the reason for the relationship’s slow decline. The film is a little top heavy with poems. By my count there are at least four full poems recited in voice overs and meaningful close ups with shots of the ocean from overhead. One Rossetti recitation is a lot for any movie, but three is really playing with fire. It feels a little bit like The Sun Is Also A Star in that way, or, on a bad day, like Queen & Slim. But when you start musing in the first two minutes or so about whether or not Grace is metatheatrically calling attention to the movie itself as a “lonely impulse of delight, ” we are almost definitionally in the weeds. There are some laugh out loud moments in the opening act. The way that Grace steamrolls through the dinner discussion of theodicy shows off how breezy and strong-headed she can be: how she smiles at her husband and asks, “Explain to him why there is suffering in the world” elicited some giggles from the crowd. Nighy’s visceral discomfort in the opening scenes at home are a source of humor in themselves. When Grace gushes at her romantically unpaired son Jamie, “I can’t bear that you’re unhappy, ” and he balks, she adds, “We’re happy, ” a comment which her husband swallows. These moments are clever early bits of comedy that transform as the story progresses and it becomes clear that our initial impression of this nearly 30 year old marriage is not one of quirk and opposites attracting, but rather one of dysfunction and denial. The conversations early in the house feel like a stage play with stilted, tidy language and convenient turn-taking. Grace demands, “Say something real. ” Edward sputters in the act of setting the breakfast things for the morning after hours in advance, then he momentarily recovers by turning the tables on his wife by accusing it of being her “problem, ” which leads Grace to lash out violently, surprisingly. This moment, in retrospect, is a blunder by Edward, a step on his way to being more honest with himself and Grace about the reason why they cannot resolve their differences. Napoleon’s march becomes a central motif of the story, especially the end of his historical lecture to his class of high school students, “They thought this an ‘accident. ’ No one looked back. ” Grace’s sense of moral outrage at the death of her marriage, her stubborn intransigence and spirited resistance to divorce serves as the wind that keeps this story sailing. “Your father committed murder, even if there’s no blood, ” Grace insists to Jamie. Puzzled by her son’s unwillingness to choose sides in the divorce, she asks, “If you saw a man beating his wife, would you walk on by and say ‘It’s not for you to judge? '” At times, Grace seems to play the cool, reasonable wife, dealing with an uncooperative, uncommunicative husband, who is escaping the commitment to his marriage, as when she calmly insists for her husband’s new phone number rather than using their son as a go-between, “I’m not a lunatic or a criminal. I simply wish to speak to my husband. ” Yet in the same breath, she seems to imply her son’s non-judgement is a kind of culpability in a moral wrong, “Have you tried” talking him out of it? she asks Jamie, as if it falls on him to convince his father to see reason. Grace’s pendulous moods do the emotional work for a frustratingly inscrutable husband, in a similar way to Ralph Fiennes’s character in A Bigger Splash, a few years back.... The ending elevates this movie to the next level, but in some ways, it feels like a pretty conventional teen romance movie with slightly older actors. I wish there had been fewer scenes with the adult son hogging the emotional space, because it feels like he was brought in to hold some of the weight as a surrogate for the millennial audience, when really all we want is to see two old, confused people grope around in the darkness of their middle age for some stability when the rug gets pulled out from under them. … Expand.

After viewing several so un-innovative "real stories" Red Joan, Fisherman's Friends) and "social realism" films (The Last Tree, VS - even though VS's world of rap battles was fascinating) I was getting really disappointed in British cinema.

Hope Gap made up for all that. It is beautifully acted (Annette Bening is extraordinary) deep and subtle, and does carry you away.

(It's probably not a good idea to play a drinking game every time a tea cup is spotted in each kitchen scene. ) Taking place in a small seaside town in rural England, it follows the breakup of a married couple and the fallout that it has on their lives and their adult son, who is working in tech and living out on his own in the city. The film looks at the differences that people can have in a marriage later in life and how breakups in marriages can destroy both people involved, and for the most part it’s a film that works, bound together by the impeccable performances of the film’s three talented leads, Bill Nighy, Annette Bening and breakout star Josh O’Connor, who can more than handle his own with two of the most experienced actors in the business on either side of the Atlantic. It looks at a 29 year long marriage and asks whether or not just because these characters have spent 29 years together does that mean that they are happy, and although there are ups and downs that come with every marriage, Hope Gap seems determined to ram home the point that love cannot last forever. Nighy plays the husband, a teacher, Edward - with a sense of well meaning to him even if at times he is cowardly, and although Bening gets the best lines in the film and much more of the material at times, she struggles with keeping a consistent accent throughout the drama. But due to just how talented an actress she is, the audience can’t help but be swept up in her performance regardless, treating the breakdown in marriage as something equivalent to that of a death in the family, with her preferring the latter as it would leave her with something to mourn and good memories to cherish, rather than just having all memories, good and bad, spoiled by recent events. O’Connor plays the couple’s young son Jamie who has a tricky balancing act to get right. How much of his father does he have in him? His mother uses him as a bargaining chip to try and get his father to stay, whilst Jamie does his best to play both sides and keep his parents happy. It’s a tough situation for him to go through especially as he looks at his parents and realises that he could well go through the same situation that they are going through later in life, and it’s the relationship between the three characters and how well it’s played out over the course of Hope Gap that is where the strongest elements of the film are. However, there are certain elements that hold director William Nicholson’s film back from being as good as it could have been. The script itself feels very formulaic and heads in just about every predictable direction that you would expect it to take, and although Bening herself is convincing and there are moments where the film feels like it is about to dig deeper beneath the surface only to be beset at every turn when her motivation is cut out from under her, as she lacks the agency and independence that one would prefer, her character feeling very reactive rather than proactive. Hope Gap doesn’t quite have as powerful an impact as a film with this amount of talent should have. Cinematographer Anna Valdez-Hanks takes full advantage of the decision to spread out the scenes set in small, idealistic English countryside houses with the openness of coastal beaches that help make the small town of Seaford feel alive and lived in. The excursions outdoors prevent the feel of repetitiveness from becoming too overwhelming, and Nicholson wisely interjects rare moments of brilliant comedy throughout the film’s runtime with some clever one-liners to prevent the depressing nature of the film feel too overwhelming, but overall, the film feels too much like a missed opportunity to wholly recommend. I want to re-write it using new concepts, and tips, with an improved layout for anyone desiring to get into one of the most fun Machine decks anyone could hope to pilot. By the end, with any luck, you could do all of this for yourself. Lets try to go to rome, fail, and land in the ocean somewhere, lost to time, only to be discovered, put back together, and be given new purpose once more. Those Bad Monsters: Monster Effect Usage Ancient Gear Beast Cannot be Special Summoned. If this card attacks, your opponent cannot activate any Spell/Trap Cards until the end of the Damage Step. Negate the effects of an opponent's monster destroyed by battle with this card (including in the Graveyard). Don't. You'd need to tribute summon him or summon him off Catapult, and you do exactly none of that in this deck, because he will not be run. Ancient Gear If you control an "Ancient Gear", you can Special Summon this card (from your hand) in face-up Attack Position. If you listen closely, you can hear the link engine this could've been. Sadly, its effect only works on itself, and probably was never used outside of the anime. Straight 0, my boy. He was probably run at some point for being the backrow hater that he was. Either days, that's not required. Plus he's a level 5 with 1500 attack. Not happening. Not anymore. These days, he sits around and tells those stories and quite frankly, we're tired of them. Ancient Gear Hydra At the end of the Damage Step, when this card that was Tribute Summoned by Tributing an "Ancient Gear" monster battles an opponent's monster, but the opponent's monster was not destroyed by the battle: You can banish that opponent's monster. If this card was Tribute Summoned by Tributing a "Gadget" monster, it can attack all monsters your opponent controls, once each. If an "Ancient Gear" monster you control attacks, your opponent's Spell/Trap Cards and monster effects cannot be activated until the end of the Damage Step. Bridges the gap between Gadjiltron and everything else, and was probably run about as often as Gadjiltron was. Ancient Gear Knight This card is treated as a Normal Monster while face-up on the field or in the Graveyard. Great art with the least offensive effect of all the 'bad' cards in this section. He's not used because better options exist, but we hang out sometimes on the weekends. He understands. Honorable Mention: Toon Ancient Gear Golem He is not an Ancient Gear in your typical respect and in fact, you won't be running him anywhere near this deck. Those Good Monsters: Monster Effect Usage Ancient Gear Box If this card is added from the Deck or Graveyard to your hand, except by drawing it: You can add 1 EARTH Machine-Type monster with 500 ATK and/or DEF from your Deck to your hand, except "Ancient Gear Box". You can only use this effect of "Ancient Gear Box" once per turn. Lemme tell ya; Slaps the top of Ancient Gear Box This bad boy can fit so much Fear in it! He's a great and very condensed draw engine whose targets are Gadget, or Frame. Well worth running 1-2. I prefer 1, because heaven forbid you draw him. Ancient Gear Frame You can discard 1 card; add from your Deck to your hand, 1 "Ancient Gear Golem" or 1 Spell/Trap that specifically lists the card "Ancient Gear Golem" in its text. You can only use this effect of "Ancient Gear Frame" once per turn. If this face-up card in its owner's control leaves the field because of an opponent's card effect: You can Special Summon up to 3 "Ancient Gear Golem" and/or "Ancient Gear Golem - Ultimate Pound" from your hand, ignoring their Summoning conditions. Did anyone ever get his second effect to go off? No? Didn't think so. Anyway screw predaplants. except don't We have our own way to search our fusion card. I like to run him at 2. The discard can make the going rough, but he's great at what he does, and can make your plays even more explosive. Ancient Gear Gadget If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can declare 1 card type (Monster, Spell, or Trap); this turn, if a monster you control attacks, your opponent's Spell Cards, Trap Cards, or monster effects (whichever was declared) cannot be activated until the end of the Damage Step. Once per turn: You can declare 1 "Gadget" monster's card name; until the End Phase, this card's name becomes that name. The plan was simple. Get him out, change his name to gold/silver gadget, play machine dupe, and do whatever makes you happy from there. Times have changed. He's not as good as he used to be since he's the only gadget you'll be running in this deck, but I still like him. I have no problems running him at 1, but you may choose to ignore him. Ancient Gear Golem Cannot be Special Summoned. If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage. He probably won't see battle as he's far too busy being something far more destructive. He's a friend. A Stalwart Companion. 2-3 is best. Most of the Extra needs him, and so will you. He's actually more easily accessible than you might think. Ancient Gear Golem - Ultimate Pound Cannot be Special Summoned. Up to twice per turn, when this attacking card destroys a monster by battle: You can discard 1 Machine monster; this card can attack again in a row. If this card on the field is destroyed by battle or card effect: You can add 1 "Polymerization" from your Deck to your hand, and if you do, add 1 other "Ancient Gear" monster from your GY to your hand. I actually hate this boy. Some might run him on the premise of him being an Ancient Gear Golem that searches Poly, which is admirable. Or at least it would be if Ancient Gear Fusion was Poly, which it isn't, and its name doesn't become poly either. I don't run him, but; do what makes you happy. Ancient Gear Hunting Hound If this card is Normal Summoned: Inflict 600 damage to your opponent. Once per turn: You can Fusion Summon 1 "Ancient Gear" Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck, using monsters from your hand or field as Fusion Materials. He can be Special summoned as well, in case you care. That 600 burn can push you closer to a win, but where we're going, it won't be needed. He's a harbinger of annihilation and as such, he's run at 3, and never any less. Ancient Gear Wyvern If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can add 1 "Ancient Gear" card from your Deck to your hand, except "Ancient Gear Wyvern", also you cannot Set cards for the rest of this turn. You can only use this effect of "Ancient Gear Wyvern" once per turn. If this card attacks, your opponent's monsters cannot activate their effects until the end of the Damage Step. Second effect exists to prevent abuse with Ancient Gear Drill, which is fine. He enables box and that is generally my first play. Literally too good to run at anything less than 3.
