As someone with no experience with the original movies, I went with a friend to see it. I was excited because I liked the style of the trailer and obviously it's my first Grudge movie.
. it was not. good.

My main complaint with the movie is there is really no plot. We're immediately introduced to the idea that the "curse" follows whoever encounters it and doesn't leave them. Every person who encounters it brutally murders their family or close ones before killing themselves. We jump from 2004 to 2006 constantly throughout the movie, almost to the point that you may forget about the time jumps and it's overall pointless, unless it's to show time will never disrupt the curse? And then the child of the main character is creepily bland. This may have been intentional for a scene later in the movie where the main character suddenly decides the way to kill the Grudge is to set the house on fire? The Grudge appears as her son and asks her to stop because he is scared, and the mom realizes it's not him when she asks him what they do when they get scared (they close their eyes and count to five, which is established earlier in the movie. This scene was very rushed, nothing led up to it, no "research" or getting help from another person who dealt with it and somehow survived. I did like this part, however because the sudden change in direction and the false idea that fire was the Grudge's demise was suspicious but unpredictable to some of the people in the audience when the movie ends with the mom being taken. I think there were a lot of unanswered questions, whether you have knowledge of the prior movies or not. There were things missing that may have helped the pace of the movie that seemed to drag on at times. I personally did not enjoy it and think there was a lot of lost potential. Plus, the kid was pretty creepy to the point the audience would laugh whenever he spoke.

Here we go again. another Grudge/Ju-On/Kayako films that comes out in the month of January curse. The Kayako's curse really works on the movie, it is just awfully bad.

The trailer says it is a 'Twisted New Vision' to shift the plot into something new but somehow the director/screenwriter doesn't do his research, it's another horror movie done 100 times. The movie is also slow with no exciting details. Unnecessary dialogues further drag the movie with no developments. No interesting characters. Plot holes? Don't mention it. A lot. And the ending. oh my God. It's that another, Okay we did it, we defeated the ghost, only to realize later that the ghost is one step ahead of them and bam! End credits title shows up.' However, some of the things are great. One of them is the lighting. It really feels very dark and ominous all the time. Second, the main girl who also acted in the Crocodile episode of Netflix's Black Mirror, she pulls it off excellently for a performance in a horror film. Finally, though jumpscares is a lousy technique, the final 30 minutes is full with effective ones. Overall, it is a movie that you should watch only if you love any of the actors/crews involved in this film or if you love The Grudge series very much.
