Saw this film at tiff's secret movie club which was also the film's north American premier. This is a well made war film with technical aspects being really stand out. It is a towering achievement for cinematography, the sound work is top notch, the depiction of front lines, trenches, the mud filled with rotten corpses was incredibly powerful and Sam Mendes did a masterful directing here.

However I've had some issues that I think really hurt the film and leave a bad taste: 1. There are a few scenes here that probably belong to James Bond flicks than a realistic world war film. I won't spoil anything but I wonder how Mr Mendes would have made this before Skyfall. 2. Again there are some events that are highly dramatized and some of them feel just dumb/unrealistic. I don't know how much control did Mendes have on this production but I was really annoyed at certain times. Overall I think this is a worth-watching, expertly made war film that would've been a great one but it's still enjoyable.

If you have seen Saving Private Ryan and practically any other war movie you will recognize all of these tropes:

" No Good Deed Goes Unpunished. after saving the life of an enemy combatant "Language Barrier Encounter with a Female. however she just happens to know enough English to convey her love "The Combat Fatigued Soldier. snivelling and crying, unable to lead men over the wall into battle "Horrible Marksmanship by the Enemy" and its cousin "Pinpoint Marksmanship by the Hero" "Gunshot Nicks and Grazes to the Hero Does Not Stop Him" I could go on. but you get the point. Maybe I am too old and having seen nearly war movie, they are all starting to look the same.

Am I seeing an alternative version of Chappie. This film was good but not brilliant, too many inconsistentes I mean who the heck walks towards a random guy in a warzone ? You have no idea who they are ! Among other things such as the perfectly clean uniform the main characters wore at the start and how the soldiers seemed to be so chilled in the trenches playing cards, smoking, and having s good old laugh. Where is the signs of trench foot, illness, the fear, just did not convince at all. It's like they paid a medium third rate director alot of money to make a sub par movie.
An acquaintance said that this movie glorified war. Not at all, it actualky shows what people in war are capable of doing and shows the extremes of human behavior in stressful situations. Harry and Quirrell: The Adventure Continues.

Absolutely phenomenal. I was glued to the screen, I couldnt look away. It was so riveting and such an incredible feat. If this doesnt win best cinematography I will riot.

First sonic, now this movie. my wallet's gonna be empty by the time the weekend is over. That last shot reminded me of the dark knight rises when hes running on the football field. Guaranteed Oscar. Its a movie about fake actors?? why would anyone take this serious. Quality HD. I just saw it and I definitely felt that “no time to take it in” thing, and I think my favorite thing was the trenches itself, showing a contrast between the makeshift British trenches which shows the mindset of “we will be moving soon anyways no time to build” and the German concrete and better built trenches showing the “we might be here awhile” plus the dugout with bunks. I came out exhausted from watching the just that good... First time in a long time a trailer gave me chills when I saw it at the theatre. The ticking reminds me of Hans Zimmer's work with Christopher Nolan. I'm also pleased to see a that we're getting a movie focused on WWI as opposed to WWII, it's been some time since I've seen a great WWI flick using today's visual affects.
I can't believe this did not win best picture. 10 minute video and the answer to the question is 30 seconds long from 4:00 to 4:37.

Is the most deep, impressive and realistic way of seeing what kinds of things happened in WWI. This movie made me leave the cinema with tears in my eyes as if I have had a time travel experience to the World War I, and then waking up and realizing how wonderful are the times we are living in. 1917 is a must see movie, for everyone.
