El film es una versión homosexual de la novela original, en la que se sustituye a la institutriz femenina por un cuidador gay masculino. La adaptación más conocida de la novela Otra vuelta de tuerca es la que se conoce como Suspense (1961), dirigida por Jack Clayton. Eloy de la Iglesia, conocido por films de temática de mitomanía masculina como Navajeros o Los últimos juegos prohibidos rueda aquí un film muy particular, donde cambia la relación hetero entre la institutriz y el niño protagonista por una relación gay con la presencia de un cuidador.
