The Lodge Download fullerton. Not quite as effective as it feels like it should have been but nevertheless still a solidly chillin... g horror story, this movie nicely benefits from a collection of wonderful performances, strong directing and increasingly tense atmosphere which mostly helps to make up for the unwanted mistakes that can be found in some aspects of its writing. All of the performances in the movie are wonderfully well done and do a lot to fill their roles with a great sense of emotional depth which makes the material they are playing with hit much harder than it otherwise would, as you have Riley Koegh, Jaeden Martell, Lia McHugh and Richard Armitage instantly engaging you in their sharply eery energy that is constantly growing in a way that satisfyingly makes you feel every bit of uncomfortably creepy tension that is sitting in the air between them. Also the movie is quite strongly directed with an immediate sense of a clear cinematic vision that is slowly able to absorb you into every well crafted image and slick sequence to a rewarding affect, as writer/directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz take a chillingly nightmarish approach to the visual execution of it all in order to put you into an almost a dreamlike state of never knowing what exactly you are looking at or what exactly it all means until properly smacking you in the face with a rewardingly large dose of horrific reality. Plus the whole atmosphere of the movie is very effective and increasingly tense to the point where even though you don¡Çt always know exactly what is going to happen you can always really feel that it is going to be bad, as you are treated to a collection of coldly crisp cinematography by Thimios Bakatakis, ambiguously intriguing editing by Michael Palm and engrossingly offkilter music by composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans that keeps you very invested even when some other things start lacking. Sadly what ends up lacking is the writing of the movie itself and how some unwanted storytelling mistakes get made along the way, as Fiala and Franz along with co-writer Sergio Casci initially present you with a tightly focused narrative that captivatingly forces you to look at everything from only one perspective but then they weirdly decided to shift that perspective into a wholly different direction that not only ruins your immersion but also just isn¡Çt near as interesting. On top of that the ultimate climax of the movie doesn¡Çt quite work the way you would like it to and leaves you with a lot of ideas of how it could have been done better more than anything else, as the writers do come up with a very cool story concept that certainly makes way for some unnervingly creepy potential but sadly it takes so long for that potential to finally be fully realized that by the time you get to it you can¡Çt help but feel disappointingly underwhelmed. So in the end this movie is certainly a flawed piece of work but it is also still a solid enough one, as even when things aren¡Çt exactly working you can¡Çt help but enjoy the clear talent that is present both in front of and behind the camera which definitely makes it ultimately worth watching. I attended the east coast premiere of "The Lodge" a few weeks ago and can say it will most likely be 2020's most polarizing and divisive horror release.

If you've seen Franz & Fiala's last film, Goodnight Mommy, you'll have an idea of what to expect in terms of tone and themes. The cinematography is breathtaking, and Riley Keough's performance is unbelievable. Like "Mommy" the central characters are two siblings who are up against some sort of unknown/unstable maternal presence while existing in isolation. Instead of a vast, lonely European farm, The Lodge" features exactly what the title suggests. a mountain lodge in the middle of nowhere. It's so well done that you can almost feel the icy frost in the theater as the film progresses. Franz & Fiala take a lot of cues from Ari Aster, ESPECIALLY "Midsommar, in depicting sudden tragedy and brutal, existential grief that consistently drips off the screen. Additionally, there are underlying themes of mental illness and psychosis that are done really well and tactfully. although I might add it may not seem so at first. Sorry if that's cryptic, I just don't want to give any spoilers. The ending will knock you on your ass. I couldn't move after the screening, I was frozen for half the credit roll, and couldn't stop thinking about it for days. I highly recommend "The Lodge" for fans of Aster's work, or if you liked "Goodnight Mommy" and want more of the same slow-burn insanity.
