Not Michael, but damn, this guy could be his brother! WOW! Really great. Six years to the day after Live Aid, Londons famous Wembley Stadium played host to a second concert would go down in history. On 13 July 1991, Aussie superstars INXS delivered the show of their lives at Wembley, with their career-defining gig captured in all its widescreen glory by a spin-off concert film and live album ? both of which were titled Live Baby Live. At Wembley, INXS surfed the crest of an almighty wave that first started to swell when they released their breakthrough album, Kick, in 1987, and continued to build with 1990s X: another highly polished pop album that yielded multi-platinum sales and thrust the band into rocks premier league. Listen to Live Baby Live: Wembley Stadium on Apple Music ?and Spotify. “The whole band was on fire that night” INXS Wembley Stadium date was just one of many stops on their high-profile Summer XS tour of 1991 and ? as the original 11 November 1991 edition of Live Baby Live proved ? they were on ferocious form. That first editions 16 tracks were culled from shows in cities ranging from Sydney to Dublin and Rio De Janeiro, and they demonstrated there were few bands on the planet capable of touching INXS at that particular moment in time. The Antipodean stars were on a roll when they arrived in Europe in the summer of 1991. Theyd completed the tours successful “homecoming” leg in Australia during April and May, after which their Summer XS itinerary found them headlining European festival shows from 28 June through to 16 July. To a man, the band agreed the high point of the jaunt was the 13 July show at Wembley Stadium. “A night to remember for all time” “The whole band was on fire that night”, bassist Garry Gary Beers recalled in 2019. “Michael was so good, he sang his heart out and gave every person in the crowd a night to remember for all time. He truly had that amazing ability to make the biggest shows as intimate as the pubs we grew up in musically. ” INXS needed to be on top of their game that night, not least because they were topping a bill of real pedigree. Their headlining slot was preceded by sets from fast-rising indie-dance outfit Jesus Jones, Irish favourites The Hothouse Flowers, San Franciscan rockers Jellyfish, widely-acclaimed British soul-rock outfit Roachford and iconic Blondie star Deborah Harry. However, as director David Mallets recently-restored Live Baby Live? film and its newly-released, 21-track audio counterpart so vividly reveal, INXS were never going to falter. Michael Hutchence and company may have stepped out in front of an awe-inspiring 74, 000 people, but as soon as drummer Jon Farriss hammered out the machine-like rhythm of ‘Guns In The Sky and his colleagues locked in behind him, they never once looked back. “One of the biggest global sensations at the height of their powers” The nights setlist drew heavily on both Kick and X, with vast swathes of the crowd moving as one to ‘New Sensation and hollering back the chorus of the sinewy, blues-based ‘Mystify. Kicking off six consecutive tracks from X, a tense, measured performance of ‘The Stairs ramped up the tension, then gave way to the swaggering, wah-wah-driven ‘Know The Difference, before a soaring ‘Disappear provoked an enormous roar from the crowd. Shrewdly, INXS kept a battery of hits in reserve for the home stretch, which included celebratory versions of ‘Bitter Tears, ‘Suicide Blonde and the biggest, phattest version of their breakthrough hit, ‘What You Need. The latter song culminated in a lengthy call-and-response workout between Hutchence and the crowd; for all his poise and consummate cool, the much-missed frontman was visibly moved by the love his band received that night. “F_ ing hell, it looks like all Englands out there! ” he said, his voice cracking with emotion as ‘Suicide Blonde wound down. If that wasnt enough, encores including ‘Need You Tonight, a heartstring-tugging ‘Never Tear Us Apart and a seven-minute ‘Devil Inside almost brought the venues famous Twin Towers down. By the time the Aussie legends finally relinquished the stage, no one present would have quibbled with executive music producer Giles Martins assertion that theyd just witnessed “one of the biggest global sensations at the height of their powers”. Yet the band also felt that Live Baby Live documented them scaling a once-in-lifetime peak: “We were just six blokes from Australia that treated Wembley Stadium like just another pub gig, ” Tim Farriss said in 2019. “We went in with a PA and a few lights and played our asses off. No ego ramps, no back-up singers, no props, no grand pianos, just the six of us ? and the audience went nuts! Thats all we needed! ” Live Baby Live: Wembley Stadium can be bought here.

INXS s remastered Live Baby Live movie? ? based on their iconic appearance at Londons Wembley Stadium before 73, 791 fans on July 13, 1991 ? will have a worldwide launch on 1, 000 screens. Its UK-based distributor CinEvents has locked in the UK, Ireland and Europe on November 27, with North, Central and South America from December 9. Next year should see screenings in Asia and the Middle East where INXS has found a young new audience through streaming services. Released in cinematic 16:9 widescreen, CinEvents London-based managing director Joseph Evea already had high expectations for the films box office appeal. But attending its world premiere at the Byron Bay International Film Festival in late October amped his prospects greatly. “I expected that a few people would get up and dance in the aisles. But literally from the second song, they were all up on their feet, and gave it a standing ovation. “It was brilliant and something, as a distributor, so wonderful to see. It was nothing Ive seen in a cinema. It was so well received. ” The response at the world premiere was exactly what CinEvents is trying to create with its music screenings. “Normally going to the movies is a passive experience. But we want people to treat it as an active one, and in which they have a communal experience. ” Eva explains that the advent of streaming forces cinemas to approach releases differently. “We are becoming more of an ‘experience culture. Its about people coming together over something theyre passionate about., enjoy it together and forget where they are. “You have to start thinking differently about cinema, no just the place where you go and see the new Marvel movie. ” Unlike festivals, where fans have to travel hundreds of miles, cinemas are always local. CinEvents screens opera, ballet and theatre performances, while its most recent rock project was Lionel Richie headlining the Legends stage at the Glastonbury festival in the UK. It two biggest successes have been about David Bowies creation of Ziggy Stardust and Elvis Presleys triumphant return to the stage in 1968. Both were available on DVD, but the fact that they grossed seven-figure turnovers showed the appeal of absorbing them in big screens and stunning sound. Evea is working towards the day when a major spectacle, like, for instance, Radiohead at the Pyramids, can be screened via cinema globally. Searching For Ten Years Live Baby Live was first released on DVD in 35mm negative When the bands global creative officer Chris Murphy returned to take over INXSs business reins, his focus was on re-establishing their brand with reissues and new projects featuring their songs. The Wembley show was regarded as a pinnacle of their live show, the band firing on all eight cylinders after ten years on the road. The bands Garry Gary Beers remembers “The whole band was on fire that night but especially at our ‘pointy end ? Michael was so good as he sang his heart out and gave every person in the crowd a night to remember for all time. “He truly had that amazing ability to make the biggest shows as intimate as the pubs we grew up in musically. ” However, the canisters with the film were missing in action. For ten years Murphy looked for them in the UK and US ? and finally found them in Australia. The film was painstakingly restored shot-by-shot over a twelve-month period to Ultra HD 4K. The eye-raising visual upgrade put the audience members right next to the band on stage, capturing the members facial expressions. Hutchence, in particular, comes alive; a masterclass on how he built up the show throughout a hits-set leaping in atmosphere from strutting exhilaration to darkness. While Richard Lowensteins elegantly-made Mystify (out on ABC-TV, DVD and Blu-Ray this month) was a postcard about the sadness and decline in Hutchences life, Live Baby Live captured him at his most triumphant. According to Murphy: “When youre working on a project for so long, theres the fear ‘Whats everyone going to think? “That turns into astonishment. Watching it back, Michael is better than even I thought he was ? how he managed the stage. “His voice became more powerful as the gig went along. It was extraordinary to watch ? the crowd and band were as one”. The audio is presented in full Dolby Atmos, created by Giles Martin, the bands executive music director, and Sam Okell at Abbey Road Studios. It was released this month through Petrol/Universal as a three-album vinyl deluxe, 2CD and all digital formats.
