T he Swedish crime novel Three Seconds by Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström has been relocated to modern-day New York in this big, chewy and sometimes indigestible drama thriller from director Andrea Di Stefano, who has adapted the novel with British screenwriter Rowan Joffe. It’s a story about an undercover agent who, in time-honoured style, is informed by his duplicitous handlers that he can’t be brought in from the cold just yet. Joel Kinnaman plays Pete Koslow, an ex-con out on licence and working for a Polish drug gang but secretly feeding information to FBI agent Wilcox (Rosamund Pike). The big drug deal whose exposure was supposed to be his ticket out of the game ends in bloody chaos when a cop is killed by one of the trigger-happy gangsters, and the hatchet-faced crime overlord decrees that in penance Koslow must break his parole conditions and return to prison to supervise the gang’s drug distribution there. Wilcox grimly tells Koslow that he must go along with this scheme: a nightmare journey back to jail ? back to the belly of the beast. This is a tough, muscular, sweaty thriller, swarming with minor characters; there is hardly a square inch of skin not covered in an elaborately threatening prison tattoo. The rapper and actor Common gives a strong, plausible performance as NYPD detective Grens, a straight-arrow cop investigating the murder of a fellow officer and suspicious at the stonewalling attitude from the FBI ? especially Wilcox’s slippery superior, Montgomery, played by Clive Owen. The Informer is spread over a big canvas, but by the time of its big finale it is leaking energy. It might have made better sense as an episodic drama on television but it is brash and watchable, its world reeking with cynicism and fear.

The title protagonist is one well-known Polish drug dealer in New York, Pete Koslow (Joel Kinnaman) who has been working secretly for the FBI to bring down the Polish kingpin the "General. He proclaims as much, hanging from a tightening noose, with fading breath, I'm a snitch" three little words that prevent those fading breath from becoming dying breath.

The plot, while not entirely straight forward, is nowhere near convoluted. The movie opens with Pete, obviously excited, telling wife Sofia (Ana de Armas) that this one last deal he is working on may bear fruit. A monkey wrench however is thrown unexpectedly into the whole business, a new buyer Daniel Gomez who is quickly recognize as an undercover NYPD cop and shot dead by one of the Polish gangsters. As a suspect, Pete will have his activities jeopardized. The shrewd General, however, recognizes this as an opportunity to use Pete. The scheme is for Pete to break parole (he had killed someone in a random fight) go back jail and supply drugs to the inmates of the entire prison system. This would put them all in the General's debts, whether in prison or after they come out. "I will own a (unprintable) army" beams the General. There are two other players in this game, both from the law-enforcement side. FBI agent Wilcox (Rosamund Pike) Pete's contact, tries to help him get out of this mess as well as complete his mission. Her boss Montgomery (Clive Owen) however, sees Pete only as a pawn and is ready to abandon him (and even Wilcox if she chooses to side with Pete) if and when he no longer has any value. NYPD officer Grens (Common) Daniel's boss, vows vengeance for him. "I sent the guy when he was not ready. It's on me." With Pete being the prime suspect and a glimpse of Wilcox in a car outside the crime seen caught on surveillance video, the plot pits the "FBI field office" against "the country's biggest police department. A good fight" Grens throws down the gauntlet to Montgomery and Wilcox. Let the game begin. The story takes twist and turns, some predictable, some less so. The ending twist is quite clever - I don't believe I have ever seen a sniper's shot played this way - although somewhat far-fetched. This movie is not spectacular. What make it quite an enjoyable crime thriller is having everything a little above average: narrative development, pacing, handling of suspect and action, framing of shots. While character development is not among its fortes, there is an excellent cast. Kinnaman, among the top of the B-list male leads, does a credible job here. Pike and Owen do not have much to work with but they bring into the movie their stellar persona. Moving fast into stardom is de Armas, making a definitecontribution. Perfectly cast is Common. A few other supports complete a solid cast.

" [2] Plot [ edit] In Dublin in 1922, Gypo Nolan ( Victor McLaglen) has been kicked out of the outlaw Irish Republican Army (IRA) for not killing a Black and Tan who killed an IRA man. He becomes angry when he sees his streetwalker girlfriend Katie Madden ( Margot Grahame) trying to pick up a customer. After he throws the man into the street, Katie laments that she does not have £ 10 for passage to America to start afresh. Gypo later runs into his friend and IRA comrade Frankie McPhillip ( Wallace Ford), a fugitive with a £20 bounty on his head. Frankie, tired of hiding for six months, is on his way home to visit his mother ( Una O'Connor) and sister Mary ( Heather Angel) under cover of the foggy night. The slow-witted Gypo decides to turn informer for the £20 reward, enough for passage to America for the both of them. The Black and Tans find Frankie at his house, and Frankie is killed in the ensuing gunfight. The British contemptuously give Gypo his blood money and let him go. Gypo subsequently buys a bottle of whiskey and tells Katie that he obtained money by beating up an American sailor. He goes to Frankie's wake, and acts suspiciously when coins fall out of his pocket. The men there tell him that they do not suspect Gypo of informing, but he then meets with several of his former IRA comrades, who wonder who informed on Frankie. Gypo claims it was a man named Mulligan ( Donald Meek). Though Gypo is drunk and talking nonsense, the others begin to suspect him but do not have enough evidence as yet. Gypo leaves and gives out £1 notes to a blind man ( D'Arcy Corrigan) and some bar patrons, but people wonder why he had such a sudden influx of cash. Meanwhile, Mary tells the IRA that the only person Frankie talked to that day was Gypo, and the men decide to hold an inquest into the death. Gypo goes to an upper-class party to look for Katie, but gets drunk and buys rounds of drinks. Gypo is then taken away by his former IRA comrades when they figure out it was he. He is taken to a kangaroo court, where Mulligan is questioned and is accused once again by Gypo. However, the comrades do not believe Gypo, and give him a detailed accounting of where he spent his entire £20 reward. Gypo then confesses to ratting out Frankie. Gypo is locked up, but before he can be killed he escapes through a hole in the ceiling. He runs to Katie's apartment, where he tells her that he informed on Frankie. Katie goes to see the commissioner who presided over the trial, Dan Gallagher ( Preston Foster), to beg him to leave Gypo alone. The rigid Gallagher says he cannot do anything, and Gypo might turn in the entire organization to the police if he is allowed to live. However, other IRA members, having overheard Katie, go to her apartment and shoot Gypo, much to Katie's horror as she hears the shots. Gypo wanders into a church where Frankie's mother is praying and begs forgiveness as he confesses to her. She does forgive him, telling him that he did not know what he was doing, and the absolved Gypo dies content on the floor of the church after calling out to Frankie with joy.
