Lmao, I was researching on the Mughals a while ago out of curiosity and Panipat came coincidentially! amazing. Last sceen is too much. Love this movie?. People please watch the movie! It's truly for the first time I've seen a perfectly dramatised Bollywood movie that has remained historically accurate. Sab,Sè,mahoubat,Karo,hindo,Muslim,kar,kar,k,mat,maro. Ashutosh Gowarikers Panipat tries to show how the heroic efforts of Arjun Kapoors Sadashiv Rao Bhau fundamentally changed someone as heartless as Sanjay Dutts Ahmad Shah Abdali. However, that intention is squashed under the burden of tedious storytelling, boring performances, and bland direction. Growing up, I have watched Ashutosh Gowarikers movies multiple times. To be honest, they used to be the center of these weekend events where the entire family would gather around the television and watch something like Lagaan or Jodhaa Akbar or Swades. And there were a few reasons for that. One, they felt authentically Indian and instilled a sense of pride for being a citizen of this diverse country. Two, because they used to be long (but in a cozy way) especially with commercial breaks between them, so you could watch one movie for the whole day and pepper it with snack breaks and whatnot. However, for some reason, that Midas touch went away after Khelein Jee Jaan Sey and I am here to say that it hasnt returned with his latest offering, Panipat (or Panipat: The Great Betrayal. Panipat is directed and co-written by Ashutosh Gowariker. The other writers who are involved in the crafting of the script and the dialogue are Ashok Chakradhar, Chandrashekhar Dhavalikar, Ranjeet Bahadur, and Aditya Raval. The music is by Ajay-Atul, cinematography by C. K. Muraleedharan, editing by Steven H. Bernard, production design by Nitin Chandrakant Desai and costume design by Neeta Lulla. It stars Arjun Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Kriti Sanon, Mohnish Bahl, Padmini Kolhapure, Zeenat Aman, and Nawab Shah. It is based on the Third Battle of Panipat or the build up to it. The movie starts off with the Marathas emerging as the most powerful empire in India. But that is challenged by Afghan King Ahmad Shah Abdali. So, it is upto Sadashiv Rao Bhau to stop him. However, a disclaimer before the movie suggests that the events have been heavily fictionalised. Therefore, believe everything youre witnessing with a grain of salt. The screenplay and dialogue are written by Ranjeet Bahadur, Ashok Chakradhar, Chandrashekhar Dhavalikar, Ashutosh Gowariker, and Aditya Rawal, and thats probably where the problem lies. Okay, here me out. I am not saying that too many writers are a problem. Heck, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse had three directors and three writers, with one of them working as a director and a writer and that is my favourite animated movie of all time. What I am saying though is that too many bad writers is a major no-no. If you go through even 15 minutes of Panipat, uninterrupted, youll be able to imagine how unproductive and chaotic the whole writing process must have been. Theres little to no flow in the story. Theres a tiny, miniscule feeling of one act impacting another. But its told in such a way that youll not even notice it. Its almost the writers are saying ‘this happened and then this happened and that happened and then this happened and that happened. Thats practically it. The script has no sense of flow or narrative coherence. Its just a sequence of events that happen without any emotion and then (thankfully) it just ends. YouTube/Reliance Entertainment Panipat does make a bold attempt to tie everything together by showing how the heroic acts of Sadashiv changed the mindset of someone as vicious and dangerous as Abdali. And, honestly speaking, it would have worked if the writers would have fleshed out those characters by making them feel like actual people instead of making them sound like caricatures. Trust me, when you listen to them talk, you will notice that you can see them talk, you can hear them talk and you will even understand what they are talking about. But none of it will register. So, if I ask you what two characters were talking about a minute after their conversation has ended, I can guarantee that you wont be able to explain anything. Thats how mind-numbing the character interactions are. Additionally, its funny that every time a character needs to convince another character, they just increase their decibel level and the jobs done. Ashutosh Gowarikers direction has nothing to keep you engaged. Instead hell actually encourage you to doze off. Gowarikers direction in this movie is a big time oof! I might be having a reaction like this because I have seen something as simple as Knives Out be so effective with every tool it had in its possession. And then I am seeing Panipat, where Gowariker literally has everything at his disposal and yet he does so little with it. The production design and costume design are undoubtedly good, so the movie might be a little easy on the eyes. But as soon as you start noticing how little the camera moves through all that space in the set and how blandly some of the most intense conversation scenes are shot, your blood pressure will certainly start to go up. I suffer from low BP and yet I found myself thrashing in my seat, wanting something interesting to happen so that I could make an effort to invest in the story. However, I guess, Gowariker had no interest in keeping me interested. Period dramas usually have very grand scores. Gowariker himself has done it in Jodhaa Akbar. So, I dont know what the f*ck happened here. Its like he confused the composers to such an extent that their music felt like a puppy lost in the woods, trying to do something to justify its existence. The editing is considerably ‘blah as well because there are shots that go nowhere and yet they are there in the final cut. How? Theres a shot where Abdali is conversing with someone (I dont remember to be honest) on a balcony. The camera is behind them and it dollys towards them and goes past them to show the expanse of land they were looking at. The shot lingers, making you think that its going to reveal something, but theres nothing. There are many such examples scattered throughout the movie, but the worst offender is the third act of the movie. I kid you not, the CGI models created for the wide shots during the climactic battle are horrible. Movies in the 90s had better CGI models than there are in Panipat. Then theres CGI dust which is just put on like an Instagram filter and its so jarring. There are the invisible cuts that kill Sadashiv. And on top of all that, there are the background actors. A fight involving Sadashiv and one of Abdalis henchmen is framed in a wide shot. So, you can see people fighting behind them. But since the central fight isnt interesting, your eyes will wander towards whats happening around. Thats when youll witness dandiya with swords. I cant believe that Gowariker had the audacity to keep such weak stuff in the movie. I think his background actors have beaten the man with a broom sweeping nothing in Quantum of Solace. Although Arjun Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt have the meatiest roles, surprisingly enough, it is Kriti Sanon who shines. If you look at every single poster out there of Panipat, youll see Kapoor and Dutt featured prominently and Sanon relegated to a small portion of it. However, in my opinion, it shouldve been the exact opposite. Sanon displayed an immense range of emotions that I have never seen her portray ever since I first saw her in Heropanti (yes, my friends, I have seen Heropanti in the theatres. She feels like a real person and, if the writing wouldve been good, I am sure I would have empathised with Parvati Bai as well. But since it doesnt, all I can do is praise her acting. The only other person who comes close is Bahl. He brings out the commanding presence of his character effortlessly and acts the sh*t out of a concluding emotional scene. The rest of the cast is just atrocious. Wheres the Arjun Kapoor who impressed me in Ishaqzaade? Here he appears so lazy and mumbles through every single conversation scene of his. Even his action scenes feel half-baked. You can see the stunt people waiting for his strike to come, thereby decreasing the tension in every single fight sequence. Dutt is watchable in comparison. For some reason he felt a little lost. He owned the costumes he was given. But it felt like he didnt get enough time to get into his character. So, he had to try and make up for it by screaming his lines. Alas, it didnt work. Final verdict Dont watch it. Dont watch it if you love period films. Dont watch it if you love Ashutosh Gowarikers films. Just pick one of the three good movies he has made and just watch them. Let Panipat be. Trust me, just let it be.
