忘却からの帰還〜Intelligent Design

2011年末のExperian-Simmonsによる消費者調査によれば、同様にテレビ番組の選好にも共和党支持者と民主党支持者の間に差異がある：

Republicans don’t watch MTV’s Jersey Shore. But they dig ABC’s Castle. Democrats don’t like Discovery’s Deadliest Catch. But they swoon for NBC’s Parks and Recreation.

Those are a few of the findings from an annual research survey by Experian-Simmons that measures the consumer preferences of various political ideologies. In a report prepared exclusively for EW, the company calculated some of the favorite − and least favorite − TV shows of political partisans. (Specifically: the report measures which shows among the survey group were watched by the highest concentration of self-identified “Liberal Democrats” and “Conservative Republicans.”)

In the findings, “sarcastic” media-savvy comedies and morally murky antiheroes tend to draw Dems. While serious work-centered shows (both reality shows and stylized scripted procedurals), along with reality competitions, tend to draw conservatives.

この結果は、ジョークやコメディについて、リベラルが選好、保守が非選好と言われてきて、それを確認する結果となっている。

実際、インテリジェントデザインの父たるPhillip Johnsonともなれば、Startrekも思想浸透の手段に見えている。

A recent study published by Heather L. LaMarre, Kristen D. Landreville and Michael A. Beam of Ohio State University in the International Journal of Press/Politics examined how audiences of different political persuasions react to jokes made by Stephen Colbert. The results are quite astounding. The authors used a respectable sample of 332 individuals, and found that personal political ideology is a good predictor of Colbert’s own political ideology. Here is the kicker: “conservatives were more likely to report that Colbert only pretends to be joking and genuinely meant what he said while liberals were more likely to report that Colbert used satire and was not serious when offering political statements. Conservatism also significantly predicted perceptions that Colbert disliked liberalism.” See? Conservative really do lack a sense of humor!

最近(2009)、International Journal of Press/Politicsに掲載された、Ohio State UniversityのHeather L. LaMarre, Kristen D. Landreville and Michael A. Moreover, the authors of the study in question also made sure to check whether the two groups thought Colbert is funny (i.e., regardless of how they interpret the comedian’s political leanings). There was no statistical difference in that case, implying that while liberals were laughing at the irony, conservatives were laughing at what they thought was a heartfelt description of the state of the world on Colbert’s part.

研究者たちはこの研究で、保守とリベラルがともにColbertを面白いと回答した（Colbertの政治傾向をどう解釈したかによらず）。統計的差異がなかったことは、リベラルは皮肉を笑っていて、保守は、Colbertの世界情勢についてに誠実な記述だと思ったものに対して笑っていたことを意味する。

また、The Hidden Brainの著者Shankar Vedantamによれば、保守は怒り、リベラルはうんざりするという：

Conservatives are angry. They are angry about President Obama, about taxes, and about government spending. If it were legal, Tea Party conservatives would like to vaporize much of Blue America.

Liberals are not angry−they are disgusted. They are disgusted by the endless questions about President Obama's birth, by the hysteria over "death panels," over Republican candidates demanding an end to masturbation. If it were legal, liberals would move all of red America behind a large screen where its antics would be less embarrassing.

Both anger and contempt have deep psychological roots. Anger usually stems from feelings of unfairness or betrayal. Contempt is anger mixed with disgust. Anger and contempt are not just emotions. They are scripts that determine our political conversation. If you are a conservative blogger, you will hunt out material that shows liberals to be unpatriotic and dangerous, because your audience wants affirmation of its underlying feelings. If you are liberal, you will play up material that shows conservatives to be stupid, because your audience wants affirmation of its sense of superiority.

保守は怒っている。彼らは税金について、政府の支出について、オバマ大統領に対して怒っている。もし合法的に実行できるなら、ティーパーティーの保守はBlue America(民主党支持地帯)を蒸発させているだろう。

怒りと軽蔑はともに深い心理学的な根源を持っている。怒りはおおよそ、不公平もしくは裏切りの感情から生み出される。軽蔑は怒りとうんざりの混合である。怒りと軽蔑はただの感情ではない。それは我々の政治的会話を定めるスクリプトである。もし保守ブロガーなら、読者が基礎としている感情の肯定を望んでいるので、リベラルが悲愛国的で危険であるというネタを集めるだろう。リベラルブロガーなら、読者が優越感の肯定を望んでいるので、保守がアフォであることを示すネタを集めるだろう。
