Microevolution (for example, the development of insecticide resistance) merely selects preexisting variation. It does not demonstrate that mutations create new variation.

細菌の実験では、有益な変異を含む変異が、一個体から成長した集団内に出現している[Lederberg and Lederberg 1952]。集団は単一の染色体から始まっているので、原集団には変異はない。すべての変異は突然変異によるものである。 さらに、病原体や害虫は抗生物質や農薬など様々なものに対する抵抗力を発達させた。それらの多くが人工的に作られ、自然にあるものとは異なっている。これらの構成物質や農薬への抵抗性をあらかじめ持っていたとは考えにくい。
