Theories of sympatric speciation by sexual selection

要旨
Early models of sympatric speciation by sexual selection showed that disruptive sexual selection can cause sympatric speciation. Later models suggested that sympatric speciation by sexual selection alone is unlikely because it requires rather strong sexual selection or stringent initial conditions. More recent models emphasize the role of natural selection to work together with sexual selection in causing sympatric speciation. In this talk, I review these early and recent models, and seek to clarify unanswered theoretical questions focusing on the relative roles of natural and sexual selection in causing sympatric speciation.

Sexual selection and experimental evolution: impacts on genetic architecture

Sexual selection acts upon traits that affect the reproductive success of both sexes, either through competition for access to mates (mainly in males) or through mate choice (mainly by females). This seems a reasonable assumption when females are sexually monogamous. However, not only it has been shown that females are far from monogamous, but also, that in many species they actively search for multiple mating partners. An important consequence of female promiscuity is post-copulatory sexual selection, which comprises both sperm competition and cryptic female choice. Studies of experimental sexual selection have tested the effect of variation in the intensity of sexual selection on male investment in reproduction, particularly sperm. However, in several species, including Drosophila pseudoobscura, no sperm response to experimental evolution has occurred. Here we take a quantitative genetics approach to examine whether genetic constraints explain the limited evolutionary resp
onse. We quantified direct and indirect genetic variation, and genetic correlations within and between the sexes, in experimental populations of D. pseudoobscura.
