タイトル:Can fungi become serious competitors in aquatic environments?

Christian Wurzbache
(University of Gothenburg Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences)

  要旨
Freshwater systems serves as important continental carbon sinks transforming over 1.5 Pt terrestrial carbon per year. These transformations are facilitated by microorganism and are well described for bacteria. In the recent years microeukaryotes, such as aquatic fungi, came into the focus of research, rediscovered by environmental seque ncing attempts. And also their role as parasites has been emphasized it is still unclear to what extent fungi contribute to the aquatic transformation processes.
As heteroorganotrophic microbes they exhibit a strong niche overlap with bacteria and other eukaryotes and the question arise under what conditions fungi may prevail or even dominate. Obvious factors are substrate and habitat, but also water chemistry and seasonal events seem to be of major importance. With habitat screenings and laboratory setups we tried to pinpoint the factors responsible for fungal success in aquatic ecosystems.
