It turns out that the combo element of that deck is the perfect accompaniment to Galakrond. The doubling up on charge minions from Mercenary is a perfect fit for Galakronds handbuffing, and a package designed to close out games explosively and efficiently turns out to be a perfect fit for the up-tempo nature of your 8 invokers. The best bit is that these packages secure a powerful win condition while leaving room for cards which increase consistency and shore up matchups versus the premier aggressive decks in the meta right now ? Face Hunter, Pirate Warrior, and Zoolock. As a result, this deck has few bad matchups which are also common. In my opinion, its also a very fun deck. The focus on Galakrond leads to a strong element of turn-planning, rewarding smart decisions about what your following turns will look like. The ability to pull out frankly fucking ludicrous amounts of damage from hand is pretty satisfying too. I was regularly able to smash my way to lethal against seemingly overwhelming boards, with my current record being a full 36 damage starting from an empty board. 2. Your focus is generally entirely on setting up your stage-3 Galakrond while either hitting your opponents face or keeping control of the board (or both. Once youve transformed, you immediately switch to either blowing your opponent out with pure stats, or more often, setting up a crazy lethal using your combo tools. The plan is quite different versus face decks though. Against these, you purely aim to outlast them. Once they run low on cards, youre able to stabilize, at which point you can usually flip the switch and start smashing them down. You play these games very differently. Your combo tools become removal or tempo tools, and in the vast majority of my games versus Face Hunter or Pirate Warrior I played my Galakrond at stage 1 or 2. You just need to survive and run them out of resources, and victory will shortly follow. Now for card choices. Lets break things down into the three major packages ? Galakrond, combo, and everything else. The Galakrond Package ? 12 cards This package needs little introduction ? its the point of the deck. But this is a good place to talk about our invoke. The Warrior invoke is very strong and can be directed either at board or face. Considering we need to use both these approaches at different times and in different matchups, this is very advantageous. Perhaps most importantly, its the only invoke thats as good at the end of the game as it is at the start. Most of the others fall steeply in value as the game progresses, but considering our face-centric plan, 3 extra damage is almost never bad. Early its very efficient for removal, and late it can give you the extra reach you need. 2x Ritual Chopper ? A powerful and versatile early weapon. This can be used to go face early or held as a 2-mana-deal-4 for crucial early targets like Phase Stalker, Mana Tide Totem, or Northshire Cleric. One cool element of the card is how the damage profile is mostly tied to the invoke, not the weapon itself, meaning you can do tricksy things like double Ritual Chopper, or Ritual Chopper into Galakrond on 9 without losing much of the effect of the card. Surprisingly powerful. 2x Awaken! ? Turns out that a 1-mana cheaper Swipe that uses your face is really good for a deck that usually isnt worried about health. You have a ton of ways to use whirlwind effects, and theres a lot of good targets for them in this meta. Underrate this card at your peril. 2x Scion of Ruin ? This is, straight up, the entire reason the deck is able to exist. Were doing a lot of other powerful stuff and Scion isnt actually directly relevant to any element of our plan, but this card is so god damned strong that it single handedly carries the deck to viability. Turns out that 9/6 worth of rush stats distributed across 3 bodies for only three mana is… good. Though rarely viable as a curve play, the power of this card lies in its swing potential due to it being so easy to play alongside other stuff later on in the game (such as your final invokes or lethal setups. We lack removal, which means that Scion is our answer to big taunts, Edwins, and Mountain Giants. Its a board-in-a-card, or an engine for armor gain or draw alongside our whirlwind effects, Battle Rage, and Armorsmith. All this is true while also being directly tutorable with Town Crier. And lest we forget, this card can be buffed by Galakrond to 7/6, making it a 21/18 in rush stats for 3 mana. I mean, sex is nice, but have you ever come back from guaranteed defeat by playing Galakrond on turn 10 followed by 21/18 in rush stats? 2x Devoted Maniac ? A steady workhorse of the deck. Due to our invoke this acts as a 2-for-1 on turn 4 a lot of the time, or else a way to deal 5 damage to a single minion in a pinch. This is also our only tutorable invoker. 2x Shield of Galakrond ? Yall know the drill. Decent body and powerful invoke effect. Unspectacular but strong. Also worth nothing this is the only taunt minion we have. 1x Kronx Dragonhoof ? Galakrond is the entire focus of the deck, so a tutor for him is worth his weight in gold. His devastations are incredibly powerful too, offering either direct damage which bypasses taunts, stabilization versus aggressive decks, or a board clear. Incredibly strong card. 1x Galakrond, The Unbreakable ? The centerpiece of the deck. 16/16 in handbuff stats alongside draw is obscenely powerful and we take full advantage of it. Theres barely a single bad target for him in the deck. Cheap minions are fine as they can be played instantly (sometimes) and get the most value from the buff. Rushers can obviously do a lot with it, and hitting chargers usually means game over for the opponent. The draw-4-minions is also what enables us to have so many 1-ofs without really sacrificing consistency. If you dont already have one, you can usually rely on this to fetch the last pieces ? the charger you need, your Bloodsworn Mercenary, or Spellbreaker to get through taunts. The Combo Package ? 6 cards This, with or without Galakrond, is usually how we win. Most games ended with me plonking down Leeroy or Korkron, damaging them so I can plop down Mercenary, and then smashing the enemy for anything from 8 to 28 damage (not including weapon dmg) depending on whether the charger is buffed and how its activated. 2x Inner Rage ? This is our central combo activator. For 0 mana, you both allow a minion to be targeted by Mercenary and buff its attack, which will be doubled up when copied. However, the card is surprisingly versatile otherwise. It can be used as removal versus face decks or a buff to help trade. It can be used to draw with Acolyte/Battle Rage or to gain armor with Eternium Rover/Armorsmith. This versatility is hugely important to our success against aggro decks, and the presence of other Mercenary-activators in the deck means this isnt too often a dead card, as you can use it in sticky situations without destroying your own win condition. 2x Bloodsworn Mercenary ? The fundamental piece of the combo package and this version of the deck. Galakrond gives a lot of stats and this card lets us double dip on that. Similarly to Inner Rage, the key to this cards excellence is how effective it is even when youre not interested in comboing. In different situations this can copy an Acolyte, or an Armorsmith/Rover (usually the best usage for it in aggro matchups. This is also quite a skill-testing card, as being creative with it and using it effectively at the right time will often save a game that might otherwise have run away from you. Never rarely sometimes always trailer legendado. Never rarely sometimes always trailer 2020. You're supposed to buy BP with gold. That's what Kingdom Management is balanced around and if you do you actually won't hurt for it very much. You can also avoid unrest spirals if you don't let your BP run negative and deal with the main quest promptly. I actually did all of that - it still felt massively punitive and unrewarding, leaving me constantly too poor to do anything else with my cash besides put out fires and make an occasional building. I didn't get as close to game over as some, but even with all that foreknowledge it was a consistently unfun stressor. This is you training your advisers to be more effective at their jobs and aiding them at whatever endeavor they sought your advice in, truncated because it's boring, essentially. Like when you claim a territory, you need to be present because there's logistics involved that your adviser can't just handle 100% on their own. The answer to both this and the previous one is "just because there's an ingame explanation of 'why' doesn't make it a good mechanic. You can come up with a lore explanation for all sorts of punitive measures - it doesn't make them newb-friendly or an enjoyable part of the game. What are you talking about? Normal is incredibly easy - you can do basically any build and still complete the game without significant issue. Simply not true, especially with Pathfinder's ruleset combined with Owlcat's lopsided implementation, where some abilities simply don't work the way they should and you can make an underpar PC fairly easily. I've played nearly every semi-well-known CRPG under the sun, usually on Veteran/Hard/whatever they call it. This game's "Normal" is very much in that league, and you can't go lower. that's an intentional tradeoff that's present in the PnP. You either make a Mobility check and move at half speed and don't take AoOs, or you move at full speed and eat AoOs. Did your DM just let you ignore AoOs or something? No, they didn't. But in a computer game it's smart to make use of that system's advantages to simplify things for the player. For example - If you've got the Mobility toggle active, only make them move at half speed and calculate Mobility checks when next to an enemy threatening them, instead of making them constantly move at half speed until you turn it off. Or just don't bother with the speed reduction and have it automatically make those checks for the PC whenever they try to move adjacent to enemies - seems like a fair trade for the game not having 5-foot steps. Either way, I gave up trying to manage the Mobility toggle before long, and the couple of friends I knew who played it said the same. Toss 3 ranks in on your tank for the Fighting Defensively bonus, and forget about it. A non-Chaotic character would never even consider vassalizing the Kobolds. A non-evil character would never even consider taking Vordakai as an advisor. A non-Lawful Baron won't make the correct arguments to convince Kesten to return to the capital in a crisis. Those are the kinds of choices that are blocked off by alignment. While a DM wouldn't say "you're not Lawful enough. a DM might say "Kesten disregards your orders and goes to the Womb of Lamashtu anyway. Letting the PC do those sorts of things without being of that alignment reeks of metagaming. And yet, that's not how the game portrays it. You don't even get to tell Kesten to go to the city if you're not Lawful - you literally don't consider it, which is retarded. You know what coming up with the right argument to convince him is? A Persuasion check, not an alignment barrier. When you fail the check, that's when the DM says "Kesten goes anyway. And a Lawful Evil character would absolutely consider vassalizing the kobolds - if they could use them as cannon fodder later. This is why alignment-locked options are dumb. Decisions that slightly shift your alignment are fine (though there are many questionable ones in Owlcat's interpretation of each) and there's always Atonement. But gating extremely common-sense, basic decisions behind specific alignments is never going to sit right - it inevitably causes arguments over what is reasonable like this one, and won't sit right for half the player base. Alignment should be descriptive, not proscriptive - a reflection of what you did, not manacles defining what you can do. The only time alignment should be prescriptive is when it's magically enforced, like a Helm of Opposite Alignment. (But if you don't feel the same, we can agree to disagree on that point. They really don't. Ekun is a god, Valerie is good if you give her some levels in Kinetic Knight and a one level dip in Thug, Tristian is a powerful caster, Harrim is strong as a gish and supporting caster, Octavia does insane damage - literally the only companion that I don't like using is Regongar and that's because his racial as a half-orc (Diehard) causes him to die too much for my taste. All of the NPC companions have reasons tied into their storylines for being the classes that they are. To clarify, I have no issue with them having the classes they are (for the most part. Ekun and Octavia are great, no complaints there (besides Octavia's abysmal Con. But they are incredibly poorly-made mechanically compared to any merc or your main character (unless you are totally new to Pathfinder and PF:K - in which case, see my other issue above about the difficulty and how the companions really don't help with it. Their "point buy" totals vary immensely, and half of them have stats in weird places. Val with 14 Str, 13 Dex, and Charisma as a Fighter? Wut? Tristian is worse in almost every way than a standard Cleric. He's a good healer, that's it, full stop. His defense is pathetic because of his subclass. Valerie is terrible without grabbing some Thug as you said and somehow finding a way to use her curiously wasteful Charisma (like Dazzling Display. She's categorically worse than a merc Fighter. Harrim's healing is anemic and he can barely pull his weight as a "gish" cleric - like Tristan his only claim to fame is having the cleric spell list which has so many of the spells you need to survive. Also like Tristan, a standard merc Cleric wastes less potential. He has a 10 Charisma! As a Cleric! He can't even pick up Selective Channeling! And his domains are terrible! He's actually a better druid! I'd say Nok-Nok and Jubilost are very solid. Jaethal sort of is too, in the sense that her immunities can trivialize some fights, though healing her is a big PITA. A lot of the companions though have to either be built perfectly and in a very specific way to compete with a standard merc you'd make, and not always even an intuitive way. Can you make them work? Sure, I did! Because I wanted to play through all their stories and quests. But combining tough fights with intentionally-gimped (sometimes severely so) companions is not a good way to make people want to use them. Their alignments also proved an issue surprisingly often with magic items I found - my jaw dropped when I found Blessed Path, then I realized literally no one among your companions can use it.
Acronyms: IG- Innocent Guest; VDO- Violent Dog Owner; FD- Front Desk; CD- Complaint Department I work for the CD for a certain hotel chain. We get all sorts of calls from people who have issues at their hotel; need their receipt sent to them; or on the rare occasion, want to compliment someone at the hotel. Sometimes the complaints are about serious issues that need addressing; sometimes they just want to bitch for the sake of getting something for free; and sometimes they are real issues, but not as big as people make them out to be. The latter usually starts the call out yelling louder than anyone else, making us not want to help them at all. Karen started out as the former, but eventually delved into the latter. Me: CD, may I have your first and last name please? Karen: Karen (last name) Me: Hi Karen, have you spoken to CD before? I proceeded to get all the information I needed to pinpoint her reservation, which allows me to see the hotel she's at, contact information, ect. After that, I proceed to ask her about why she's calling. Karen: There is someone staying here with very violent dogs. They run around off leash, and are always barking at people. I even saw them lunge at the lady at FD. I nearly got attacked in the lobby by this guy's dogs! I had to leave the hotel because I was too scared to go back to my room! Me: Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry to hear that. I would be just as upset in your situation, with there being violent animals on the property. I get a little more information from Karen about the situation, but it's mostly summarized above. One other thing I did get out of her was that there was another guest who also had violent dogs. Me: If you don't mind, I'd like to reach out to FD about this. Mind if I put you on hold? Karen: Go ahead, but make sure they know they need to kick those people out! Me: I'll see what I can do mam'm. I can't promise they're going to be kicked out since I don't have the authority to do so. All I have power to do is document your case and speak to the hotel on your behalf. Besides, if what she told me was true, then they were probably already half way out the door. Our hotel is very strict when it comes to keeping your animals calm and on leash for this exact reason. Safety is something any company should take seriously. FD: Oh yes, we already know about him. He's already been told that he needs to either get rid of the dogs, or leave. Me: Okay, I had a feeling that would be the case. Karen mentioned there was another guest too? FD: Oh no, it's just him. There's only one other person with a dog here, and he was very sweet. I even got to pet him. Me: Oh, alright then, I'll be sure to let Karen know. By the way, she said she was too scared to make it back to her room. Would you be able to escort her back so she can make it safely? And, it sounds like they already have everything under control too. I figure Karen must have confused IG's dog as being one of VDO's. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt unless they give me reason to think otherwise. Then. the entitlement hit. Me: Than you for waiting Mam'm. I spoke to FD, and they said they've already spoke to the owner of the violent dogs, and they have already been warned that they need to either remove the animals, or leave. Karen: Oh good, so they're both gone? Me: Only VDO is getting evicted. IG's dog hasn't shown any signs of aggression, so we can't do anything about them. Karen: But it's a Pit Bull! Me: Excuse me? Karen: I said it's a Pit Bull! Don't you know how violent those things are! Me: Oh, I think I know where the confusion is coming from. While it is true that Pit Bulls are usually bread as fight dogs, they're only violent if their raised to be that way. Karen: I am a dog lover, so I know about Pit Bulls, and they are violent by nature! Clearly, you are not as big of a dog lover as you think you are. Any educated animal lover knows just how poorly Pit Bulls are treated, and that their behavior is a direct reflection of how they are raised. The same can be said about any domestic animal. If you love them, they will return that love unconditionally. If you are violent with them, their natural instinct to protect themselves will kick in, and they will reflect that attitude right back at you. Me: I can assure you, that is not the case. I myself have met some very sweet Pit Bulls. My sister even has one, and he is the biggest cuddle bug. It just depends on how they're raised. Now, if you're still scared, the FD has agreed to walk you back to your room so you can get there safely. Karen: No! I refuse to stay someplace that allows violent animals in! That's unsafe, and they will attack people! Me: Mam'm has that other dog ever attacked you? Karen: No, but- Me: Then I'm afraid I can't do anything. We are not going to evict a guest if they haven't done anything wrong. Karen: This is ridiculous! I am leaving, and I am never staying at this hotel again!
