And Then We Danced is a story of forbidden love between two male dancers in Tbilisi, Georgia?but dont go calling it the dance worlds Call Me By Your Name. Directed by Levan Akin, the film, now in theaters nationwide, follows Merab (Levan Gelbakhiani) a traditional Georgian dancer in the National Georgian Ensemble, whose world is turned upside down with the arrival of a new dancer in his troupe, named Irakli (Bachi Valishvili. At first, Merab views Irakli as a potential threat; then, the two dancers relationship evolves into friendship, and eventually, the big L: lust. (Then, of course, it turns to love. Their secret draw to one another?they both have girlfriends?is a classic case of opposites attracting. Irakli is outspoken and spontaneous, his dancing more rigid and tough than Merabs, who is more quiet and elegant in movement?deemed “soft” by his instructor. What follows is a clever parallel of story lines: Merab must work to embody the style of traditional Georgian dance, the movements stiff and hypermasculine, while stifling the growing feelings that he is developing for Irakli. The stifling doesnt last long, and the more Merab acts on his desires, the more his dancing goes against the traditional aesthetic; his evolving dance style echoes his growing self-acceptance. A larger threat also hangs over their growing relationship. In Georgia, LGBTQ rights are constantly under attack. (Tbilisi itself has a strong pro-LGBTQ community, which Akin consulted with for the film. The director said he was inspired to make the film after a Pride parade in 2013 was besieged by protests. “Fifty people in Tbilisi tried to have a Pride parade, which would be Georgias first, and they were attacked by thousands of people in a counterdemonstration that was organized by the Orthodox Church and some far-right groups, ” Akin tells Vogue. “It struck a chord. ” The director, whose parents are from Georgia, but was himself raised in Sweden, decided he not only wanted to do a film about Georgias issues with homophobia?he also wanted to use the metaphor of traditional dance, and a character defying it, to make a statement about how culture and tradition needs to evolve. “The film isnt a love story for me, ” Akin says. “[Merab] does fall in love, but that sort of awakens his drive to be himself, and to break the norm that hes in. Its about self-acceptance, not just [his sexuality]?its about how he wants to choose to exhibit himself in his artistry. ” When And Then We Danced premiered in Georgia, it too was met with protests from far-right groups. While making the film, Akin and his cast had to keep the project under wraps, making use of guerrilla-style shooting. “We were trying to keep it clandestine and not tell everybody what we were doing, because of a lot of people are just homophobic by default in Georgia?not because theyre bad people, but because theyve never encountered LGBTQ people, ” Akin says. “We would tell them that we were shooting another type of film…a film about a French tourists who came to Georgia and fell in love with the culture. ” The films main choreographer, who created some of the films critical dance sequences, also chose to remain anonymous for the project. Photo: Courtesy of Music Box Films Starring in the film was a risk for leading men Gelbakhiani and Valishvili as well. And Then We Danced is Gelbakhianis first acting role. The 23-year-old studied classical ballet and modern dance, but, like many dancers based in the country, grew up exposed to traditional Georgian dance. He said he was drawn to the role after noticing parallels between his character and his own real-life experience. “Georgian dance is quite common in Georgia. Everyone used to do that when we were kids, ” he says. “It was really, really hard to adapt the Georgian dance and this shape of masculinity, because the way I dance is softer. ” Gelbakhiani understood the potential disapproval the film might court, but felt it could ultimately make a bigger impact. “In the beginning, I was a little hesitant because of the topic, and because of the fear from [our] society, ” says Gelbakhiani. “Then I realized, sometimes you dont have any tools to fight, and you dont have any tools to change some political issues. I had the chance to say something and to change something. ” Whether it will shift attitudes is yet to be seen, but the film has certainly picked up acclaim: And Then We Danced swept Swedens Guldbagge Awards last month, picking up trophies for best picture, best screenplay, best cinematography, and best actor (Gelbakhiani. “I wanted to make a film that has a lot of empathy and a lot of hope, even though it was a dark topic in many ways, ” says Akin. “Film is a good medium for that. ”.
Don't believe the bad rates, only mindless homophobes write such things. It's one of the best movies I've ever seen. ? ? Pre-trip considerations This trip report is quite long. Feel free to use paragraphs as I don't expect you to read this all. I tripped on 250ug 1plsd two days ago. When I was coming down I thought "I should write something now. Now that the wounds are still opened. But in the end I spent the following day doing absolutely nothing, numb, empty. Those days felt like being dragged again into depression. In certain moments I rather felt like being stuffed with xanax. Calm. Empty. That day passed, today came like I was not expecting it, but it really came and the new me showed up again and took control. I had to elaborate what it happened. Therefore, once awake, I forced myself to take a run. It was probably the most difficult run in 2 months, I suffered but eventually managed to finish my programm. As I was running I couldn't help but thinking about Psychedsubstance last video which I have been seeing on the comedown of the trip two days prior. The clip is a sort of critique to western society but that is not what interested me the most about it. In the video he states something that truly linked to the experience I had; that is that psychedelics make you feel, like actually feeling. They put you in a condition through which you are obliged to see what you actually are, and it may happen in several ways. In my case I ended up losing most of my cultural bias. I felt naked, insignificant in front of this mistery of being alive, of being me in the world. But let's develop the rest in a chronological manner. Trip Report Male, 22 years old, 175 cm/ 72 kg. Location: historic carnival parade, very colorful, very crowded. Location I choose this kind of location purposefully. I had two objectives for this trip: investigating the causes of my social anxiety and setting a macro goal to reach at the end of my twenties. At the end I just found other questions. 4PM: 250ug 1plsd ingested. I was still at home, in the kitchen, waiting for my girl to get ready. After about 15-20 minutes I experienced the quickiest come up I ever went through. My body was shaken by countless forms of electricity. I perceived little shakes all around my body, just like it happens the instancts after something very frightining, but extended. Some minutes later people started playing music in the streets, sounds felt like coming from the water pipes inside the walls, the voice of my girl seemed like going around my head. At that point I was really excited about the strenght and rapidity of it all. I couldn't wait any longer, I truly wanted to go out and explore. 4:40PM We're in the street. The city is completely different, not only because of the lsd. This parade literally blocks every kind of activity and for one entire day everybody don't give a fuck about anything and just enjoy the flow. At least it used to be this way, those were the precondition of carnival festivities when it was born centuries ago. Walking around I began to notice how some people seem to go around just to show off, to make others see that they have a beautiful life, a beautiful partner, beautiful children. Those thoghts were just unstoppably disguting. In that moment I realized it was going to be an hard trip, misanthropic me was enlarging. Everything was becoming really bizarre, the chaos I would have experimented later was becoming to establish itself in my head. Until 6pm to enter the parade you have to pay so we decided to go to the beach and wait there. 5PM While going there my FPS got problematically messed up, I was like lagging and after few moments it went faster than normal. After 5-10 minutes it stabilized. We walked on the rocks while heading to the shore. The visuals were getting more evident and it is interesting to note that apart from the beach time I didn't have many strong allucinations; as it usually happens my reaction to psychedelics tends to be way more cognitive and auditory than physical. The wind made several little clouds flow towards the horizon. The scenery was breathing with me as we all were following the clouds until the sun completely shut down. It was the last time I felt connected to nature and -by extension- to the world. 5:50PM At this point we were walking back to the centre chatting randomly about a lot of weird stuff. Until I made one big mistake. I now really know how powerful it could be to talk about the wrong things. We let The Truman Show come into the conversation; it was the point of no return. I started questioning everything, I got confused. It felt like I was an alien kidnapped from a reality I didn't remember. Every face, every sign, every object felt unknown. Luckily my girlfriend is a very skilled tripsitter and never went close to lose my trust in her. Knowing to be with her is what convinced me to put myself in such a difficult situation at the beginning of it all. 6:30 Confusion intensified. I went through 2 moments of actual personality regression that lasted not so much but showed this much. I literally saw some scenes of my past, they were so clear in my mind. We walked close to some luna park attractions and I switched into the 10-11 years old me; walking with my girlfirend felt like walking at the luna park with some school friend. I felt all the insecurities that kid dragged with him. I wanted to share what I was feeling but thoughts were so accelerated that I wasn't able to find the words. Why the fuck can't I speak. I asked annoyed. Just after that the second personality regression occured. I was 6-7 years old, maybe older, I don't really know. My father kept on interrupting me every time I tried to speak. An other scene: my mother telling me that something I don't recall was not good and then that an other thing was good. I think I was seeing the process of modelling of my superego. In my mind I was seeing me receiving the superego eredity of my parents superego and it disgusted me because it does not rappresent the model I would like to follow in my life. At the same time I feel trapped because it is part of me and I probably can't do much about it. I did understand that everything I didn't like about me, about my insecurity attitudes came from them. It happens very often that I blame my parents during my trips and I still don't know what to think about it, even now that I'm writing it. 6:50 Pure existensial crisis. We saw all the carnival wagons parading through the streets. People everywhere but I felt extremely lonely and alienated. Luckily I stopped feeling like the special one, trapped by everybody like Truman Burbank. Instead, I was stuck in finding an answer. Why are we here? I wrote some confused lines on my notes, while standing squeezed between thousand of people. They reflect the hardness I was finding in communicating: I bite. Uncontrollable blood. Arteries. Anchor. I am not sure it is fair to stay here looking at those colours, lights and the other glittering things you all seem so willing to look at. They all seem so busy. Looking at them recording with their cameras is absurd. I'm losing the meaning. Nothing has a meaning. I'm experiencing the dark side of being. I don't find words. I don't find meaning. What the fuck did I want to understand? Nothing has a meaning. I'll be with the flow then It is so strange being alive. Nerve impulses. Inside me it makes sense but then it dissolves and I am left with nothing 7:15PM We are home. Here started the fun part of the trip. We danced, painted, had sex (so weird) she had dinner, I ate like 2 and a half bananas. 10PM Everything I did came with this sensation of alienation, but I was still enjoying myself. 12PM Visuals cameback unexpectedely. I read Freud, I was so blown away by the structural model of the psyche and made this. 1-3AM I was astonished by the fact I was still tripping. I listened to some music and managed to fall asleept around 3 am.

Your dance is excellent your Lasha is outstanding. GOD bless Georgia. Oh my God there outfits are so hip I can still wear that today. Stupid movie, unnatural and inappropriate story. This movie is trial to deface culture of real Georgian dance and songs. Georgian dance have always been for real males, not for gays. It's elements are from real martial arts and history, and will always be.

Hes got a very interesting and great face no sarcasm. And when I say dance movies I mean like Susperia, Black Swan, Shall we Dance (Japanese original and American remake) Billy Elliot, that type of shit, not “Step Up 7, Step Step Steppin it Up to Heaven”.
You should not waste time watching this bad movie. She writes her own lines, you know. No end to her talent. Maybe SHE should host the Golden Globes etc. 3rd Day of the 1st Moon. Stonedance. "We outnumber them two to one, Follard. Remember that, and have the men remember that, cause if they don't, I'm not sure if there'll be a whole lot they can remember after this. Massey said to the accompanying bodyguard. He had seen looks laden with awe and shock after his arrival to the battlefield, for none had expected the Lord of the Shadows to join them and fight alongside them. When the spymaster danced the pirouette of death and slaughter, all doubts and fears were allayed, for there could be no place for it in the defence of one's castle. The garrison had initially driven the bulk of the mercenaries back against the walls, although the main asset of the Crimson Reavers was nowhere to be seen - Ser Crabb, a monster among men, could have drastically changed the tide. but where was he? Despite their initial victory, the traitors found within themselves enough strength to throw them back and break through their ranks and lines. And so Merrel did the most foolish thing he could have ever - or had ever - done, in his entire life covered by risks and danger. The Lord of Stonedance, blade in his hands, charged after Simon Bar Emmon. but the latter had eluded him, and Willem found no success in locating him, either. Yet Morton had been a different thing. A warrior through and through, he beat into Merrel's guards easy enough, and clove into his shoulder hard. His cloth and flesh torn apart, the nobleman withdrew, cat like eyes swinging all over the site to find something. some advantage. A way to survive? Ser. he said loud enough for his opponent to hear, in a cool tone. "Catch. Merrel chuckled, and his boot kicked up the dagger of a deceased soldier beneath him. The knife landed right into Morton's cheek, having him howl from the pain. It wasn't too deeply wedged, but he had hurt him well. The enraged combatant rushed after him, and his wide slash, although lacking fine proficiency, cut across Merrel's chest, ripping his tunic further. Fatigue seized him, and pain, but never fear. The blood and death had somehow mollified his heart, calmed it. He relished in it. Perhaps if he had been a better study at Driftmark when squiring, he'd even come to enjoy this on a masterful level. Only if the Velaryons had been better teachers. Bloody Velaryons. Such clowns. "Ser, another. He asked, pushing through the exhaustion and gritting his teeth. Massey spun out of the next blow's reach, and one of his hands loosened from the hilt of his sword, instead flinging forward to smash against Morton's face - precisely where the dagger had been thrust in. More blood oozed and his rival spat out blood, but the duel did not continue for much longer. The trickster Massey's tricks had run out, it seemed, and he was slowly realizing that - even if his heart denied it to the fullest. Death? Now? Inconceivable. He had so many things to do, so many plots to orchestrate, to sow fear. to control, and manipulate. What would happen to his network in his absence? What of his schemes? Would they disappear, like dust in the wind? And what of the very order he had sent a day prior to the attack. would it succeed? Another slash, and Merrel came down on his knee, the blade sliding out of his hands. He wouldn't be there to see it if it worked. Who'd continue his legacy? His idiotic brother, who wasn't even in Stonedance? It was impossible, he couldn't be. The hoarse, choked out cry of Lord Massey was the last thing that sounded in the chaos of the battle before the final whistling strike occured. "No. He had shouted through blood and pain, not because he feared death, nor because he wanted mercy. Merrel Massey's mastermind of a mind simply could not grasp the concept that he could be killed. And the last of his thoughts clung onto the impossibility of his death, intent on refusing the notion, until the very end. And then Merrel Massey's corpse fell, as hollow as its soul had been.
Is he fall in the end. I absolutely LOVED this movie. It conveys such an important message. You can clearly see how taboo the topic of LGBTQ+ is in Georgia, but it doesn't show how humiliating it can be at times. That's how Levan Akin kept a perfect balance, not overdoing it and symbolizing it. I like the fact that it breaks those stereotypes. YOu can feel each and every characters' emotions. You can feel the tension, love and sadness. The ending was kind of sad but also very realistic, as it's very common for closeted people. At the very end, Merab did amazing and I really liked it. Hope we can all unite one day, I want Georgia to become less homophobic, generous and more open-minded. It's a win for the gays hehe.
This movie deserves an Oscar. PERIODT. And those trolls who gave it 1/10 stars deserve no favorite movie of 2019. 10/10 would recommend. Didn't get a chance to buy the cinema tickets bc it sold out so fast! And the protests tho. Pathetic. Anygays good luck! Hope ATWD wins many, many awards.
YouTube. ?? ??????? ?????? master ?? ?????? ????. master ?????. I got free tickets for this and was not expecting much. I was astonished. The performances were breathtaking, especially the protagonist's. The film featured great locations and showcased Georgia's culture with raw honesty. It was a touching journey through loss and self-discovery.
Being Georgian and seeing all the small little details of our everyday life, types of characters we all know and have come across with. it's just surprising. Some moments were like stolen from each of our own. It's so personal and felt like being at home.
I don't see it as a gay drama, it's much more than that. it's so rich with its ideas and its message, be it forced marriages to safe girls honor, fighting for honor, drinking for honor, dancing for honor. about forced masculinity, of being strong image of our history. Relationships with our parents, grandparents, all living in the same small home. Amount of work needed to achieve something, and to be begging for 1 lari on the streets, just to fill our phone bill. it's very personal, it's very thought provoking. Those places, be it the gay bar, or now very well-known club, bassiani, how teenagers mostly spend their time, drinking, socializing and so on, what conflicts come from it. Especially in this case, from hiding, from fitting societies needs. to love someone, to explore yourself just to be left feeling used. It's so powerful. and I'm so proud that they managed to represent our culture so well, the good parts and especially the bad.
