Level 1 The trees spell out FEED! runs under bed level 2 I only saw that after I saw this comment lol I'm interested! level 1 This is from the director of Blackcoats Daughter. Could be very good level 2 I think this could be amazing. Get 2 kids in there and just keep the suspense building on if this old lady is going to eat them or not. Keep the audience second guessing themselves the entire movie. level 2 Comment deleted by user 5 months ago ( More than 1 child) level 1 Incoming synthwave soundtrack. level 1 Why the hell is it not "Hansel and Gretel" that's messing with my head? level 2 Gretel's agent paid more to get her name first level 2 It seems like it's on purpose, since hearing it the opposite order from the usual way is slightly jarring. level 2 This ain't your daddy's Hansel and Gretel level 2 Ask the dude who made Alita Battle Angel. level 2 Probably to differentiate from other "Hansel and Gretel" Movies. level 2 That's some out-of-the-box creativity right there. Why bother with a new title if you can for it... SWAP the character names. level 2 Part of it is probably better Google search results.

I thought it was a movie inspired from the poem the soldier. Level 1 I love Oz Perkins so damn much. His style is so great. level 1 "I've got a good idea boss, lets name it something unique, Hansel & Gretel is too generic. level 2 Yeah I was wondering about that. It both seems like it could be to avoid a copyright issue and also not enough to avoid copyright at the same time level 1 Wow i'm surprised to say this looks good. level 1 Looking forward to this! So excited for the movies this year! level 1 This feels like a spiritual successor to The VVitch level 2 That last line reminded me so much of 'wouldst thou like to live deliciously. level 1 I'm not sure if anyone will ever be a better witch than Joan Collins from the Faerie Tale Theatre episode, but this looks promising. level 1 I can forgive the missing Umlaut in Hänsel for english productions every time, but why would you mix up the names in the title? It sounds super off. level 2 They switched the characters around. Gretel is the older child in this version and is the main character this go round. Also if you watched the trailer they arent exactly following the normal tale. level 1 Hansel & Gretel, already screwing it up. level 1 Trailer didn't do much for me. level 1 Why do they keep trying to remake this? Talk about uninspired dialogue. level 2 This wasn't part of the deal level 2 I was hyped when the teaser came out months ago. The trailer? Not so much. level 2 "Careful over there dear, I'd hate for you to start something you can't stop. Yikes. level 2 Completely agree. Buuuuuuut, I don't care too much tbh because this story has been retold for generations so I think much of the plot, dialogue & exposition isn't really the vehicle driving this film. Just a personal opinion. The way this is shot is the only reason why I'm gonna catch this one. Oh my god I cannot wait to see these shots in a theater, this is gonna look exquisite. I very much feel a lighthouse vibe. level 2 "You're like a kite in the wind, Gretel. level 2 "There's a storm coming. Worked pretty good in the original Terminator. level 2 It's the trailer editor trying to warn us. level 2 The visuals look amazing though. Except that line it seems more than decent. level 2 What? They were just looking at the weather level 2 Is there someone we can talk to about retiring this line from screenplays forever? level 1 As a horror fan I hope this is good, but I'm getting the sense from this trailer that it's gonna be crap.
I don't watch a lot of movies, so maybe parts of this were over my head and that's why I didn't like it. It was really slow and the good parts were really rushed. A lot of things didn't make sense to me, and I couldn't make out some of the dialogue. There were a couple of intentionally comical bits of dialogue which I felt took away from the dark feel of the movie. Why would they walk into a house that was seemingly abandoned but there was a fire burning in the fireplace and decide it's a good idea to sleep there. There was also a wagon burning in the yard. What was the zombie thing? Why did the door of the witch's house have a star of David pattern? When Hansel went through the window into the witch's house, Gretel was looking through a hole to watch him. The camera cut to inside the house looking at Gretel's eye looking through a triangle which looks like the Illuminati symbol. I don't understand the significance of that. What was the Vaseline goop that the witch and Gretel used, and how/why was that the source of their power to move things? Why does the original evil entity witch thing say to Hansel "the question in your head is what's in the shed. And why is it supposed creepy/scary for there to be lots of sharp things, and he's sharpening a saw, when that never comes into play. If the original evil entity witch thing is part of this series of events, why doesn't Gretel have to face off with it too after she kills the witch, or at least mention that it's still a thing? After Gretel sends Hansel into the woods, and wakes up without him in the bed next to her, she goes into the house and looks out the window. There is something walking away from the house but I couldnt make out what it was or the significance of it. If the witch gets into the basement oven room by liquifying herself, how did Hansel get there if Gretel has to break the board away from the door to get there? And how does the food get up into the main part of the house? If she only has one barrel of kid parts, why is she wasting so much of it to make food for the kids? Seems like she uses a whole kid's worth of parts for one meal. Maybe the whole movie was a bad trip from the mushrooms they ate in the forest. Oh, also when they are the mushrooms - at one point they show Hansel walking towards the tree behind Gretel and then he's just not there anymore. I thought it was going to be a thing but it turned out to be nothing. Maybe I'm trying to make it make sense and it just isn't supposed to.
Level 1 Sure, why wouldn't it start with a single piano note. level 2 It's just one "BWAAAHHHH" short of a perfect trailer level 2 Not only that, but also the "mini trailer" before the trailer also starts with a single piano note. We get TWO IN A ROW AND THEN SOME MORE! level 2 Thanks for pointing that out. Now I won't watch the trailer. level 2 A 500 piano or a 2. 5 million piano? level 2 Tenacious D were truly revolutionary with their One Note Song. level 1 Creepy witch lady in Carnival Row plays creepy witch lady in new witch movie. level 2 She also played the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact. level 2 Alice Krige, for those who don't feel like tracking her down level 2 Also played Charles Manson.

The film is directed by Oz Perkins, produced by Fred Berger, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Dan Kagan, and the screenplay is by Rob Hayes. Sophia Lillis and Sam Leakey portray the main characters, alongside Charles Babalola, Jessica De Gouw and Alice Krige. Gretel and Hansel enter a dark wood in order to find work and food to assist their poor parents, where they stumble upon the home of an evil witch. It was announced in October 2018 that Lillis would star in Gretel and Hansel, an adaptation of the German folklore Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm, with Perkins directing the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Hayes. Casting began from November 2018 to April 2019. Filming started in November 2018 in Dublin, Ireland. Gretel & Hansel was released in the United States on January 31, 2020, by Orion Pictures through United Artists Releasing. It received mixed reviews, with particular praise for its cinematography and atmosphere, as well as the performances and horror elements, but criticism of its screenplay and pacing. Premise [ edit] The story is described as being set a long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside and focuses on a young girl ( Sophia Lillis) who leads her little brother (Sam Leakey)?into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil. Cast [ edit] Sophia Lillis as Gretel, a 16-year old girl and Hansel's older sister. [8] Sam Leakey as Hansel, Gretel's 8-year old little brother. Leakey is making his acting debut. [9] Charles Babalola as The Hunter, a young man who helps Gretel and Hansel to go back home. [10] Alice Krige as Holda / The Witch, a terrifying and powerful evil witch who lives in the shadows of the dark wood and kidnaps Gretel and Hansel. [9] Jessica De Gouw as Young Holda / The Witch Production [ edit] In October 2018, the Hollywood Reporter announced that Orion Pictures had started developing a film adaptation based on the German folklore tale Hansel and Gretel, with Oz Perkins directing a screenplay he co-wrote with Rob Hayes and Sophia Lillis starring as the lead character. [11] Sinister producer Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and The Autopsy of Jane Doe producer Fred Berger, partners at Automatik Entertainment, were announced as producers, with Sandra Yee Ling and Macdara Kelleher as executive producers. [12] In November 2018, Charles Babalola was cast as The Hunter, a new character who helps Gretel and Hansel to go back home. [13] In April 2019, Alice Krige, Jessica De Gouw, and Sam Leakey joined the cast, with Leakey making his acting debut. [12] Perkins explained in an interview that the title was changed because this version focuses on Gretel: It's awfully faithful to the original story. It's got really only three principal characters: Hansel, Gretel, and the Witch. We tried to find a way to make it more of a coming of age story. I wanted Gretel to be somewhat older than Hansel, so it didn't feel like two twelve-year-olds ? rather a sixteen-year-old and an eight-year-old. There was more of a feeling like Gretel having to take Hansel around everywhere she goes, and how that can impede one's own evolution, how our attachments and the things that we love can sometimes get in the way of our growth. 14] Principal photography on the film began on November 9, 2018, in Dublin, Ireland, and wrapped in December 2018. [15] Additional filming and reshoots commenced in January 2019 in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. Release [ edit] The film was released on January 31, 2020, by United Artists. [9] Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] In the United States and Canada, the film was released alongside The Rhythm Section, and is projected to gross 4?7 million from 3, 000 theaters in its opening weekend. [16] 6] The film made 2. 3 million on its first day (including 475, 000 from Thursday night previews. 17] Critical response [ edit] On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 56% based on 50 reviews, with an average rating of 6. 22/10. The site's critical consensus reads. Gretel & Hansel ' s rich visuals satisfy, even if this adaptation of a classic fairytale gets a little lost in the woods on the storytelling front. 18] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 64 out of 100, based on 16 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews. 19] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C?" on an A+ to F scale. [17] Chandler Levack from The Globe and Mail wrote, Everything about Gretel & Hansel is weirder, smarter and way more cinematic than I'd expected, thanks to some fascinating movie choices made by director Oz Perkins. Kate Rife from The A. V. Club wrote: If one of the boundaries being tested in this film is viewers' patience, the reward for?to use a refrain repeated throughout the film?'trusting the darkness' is well worth the commitment. Frank Sheck of The Hollywood Reporter wrote. Gretel & Hansel may alienate some horror movie fans with its extremely leisurely pacing and emphasis on atmosphere and mood rather than visceral shocks. But while the film certainly demands patience, it provides ample rewards with its lush stylization. " Contrarily, Andrew Barker of Variety wrote that "The problem is that so many of its virtues feel compromised. Mark Kennedy of The Associated Press wrote. Gretel & Hansel is as visually arresting as it is tedious, a 90-minute movie that really should have been a 3-minute music video for Marilyn Manson or Ozzy Osbourne. It's in the horror genre only loosely. It's more eerie, if that's a genre. Actually, it's like dread for 90 minutes. It's dreadful. " References [ edit.
