Brief - A powerful and thought-provoking true-story, "Just Mercy" follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan might have had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson.) One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx,) who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds-and the system-stacked against them Release Date - 2019 Runtime - 137 Min country - USA 8,2 / 10 Stars writer - Bryan Stevenson, Destin Daniel Cretton.
Just mercy box office. Just mercy. You can tell that Jamie is so proud of what Michael has accomplished with this film. Just mercy study questions. Just mercy book. Just mercy ships. Just mercy movie based on true story. If I was to list this film's greatest strength, that would be its ability to pull you into the characters' situation and feel their sense of frustration at the injustice they face. The film opens with one man being aggressively arrested for a crime he didn't commit, then transitions to a young student visiting prison for the first time, where he meets a peer who turns out to be more relatable than expected. From there, the audience sees how these men are driven, what they're fighting for, and how it effects their lives as well as the community around them.
Michael B Jordan, as usual, was fantastic. He did a great job portraying this young idealist who, despite being Harvard educated and possessing solid evidence, finds himself unable to make the difference he originally thought he could. Jamie Foxx's performance was also great; he displayed genuine vulnerability and emotion as this embittered, beaten-down (but still somewhat hopeful) man in a cruel world. I had no issues with the technical aspects of this movie; they didn't do anything special nor did they do anything wrong. This being a legal drama, the script might feel a bit predictable to some, and some of the dialog/speeches seemed a bit too grandiose for real life. There are a few scenes, especially the two montages set to music, that felt a bit cliched, but this movie also has two particular sequences (which I won't spoil here) in the second half that are very effective and powerful. Overall, this is a well-made and well-acted movie adapted from a pretty important true story, so I would recommend it to anyone interested in criminal justice or simply anyone who enjoys cinema made with a purpose. *P.S, don't watch the full trailer; it showed way too much from the third act of the movie. I don't count that against the film itself, as the marketing team is separate from the cast and crew, but I just wanted to warn people.

"Just Mercy, " the new film about crusading?attorney Bryan Stevenson (played by Michael B. Jordan), focuses on?Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx), a wrongfully convicted death-row inmate from?Monroeville, Alabama ? the birthplace of Harper Lee, whose beloved novel "To Kill A Mockingbird" dealt with a lawyer fighting to free an innocent African-American defendant. The?location, and the?reaction of proud locals who?resisted Stevenson's efforts to free McMillian, were true. "It was ironic to have people in the community tell me, 'You¡Çre a lawyer, you should go to the "To Kill a Mockingbird"?Museum, '" Stevenson says.?"I had the same response every time:?'I'd love to, but I¡Çm really busy freeing an innocent black man who has been wrongly convicted of a crime and?facing execution. '?The?disconnect between romanticizing that story and indifference to injustice in?a real wrongful conviction, that very much parallels my story. " Jordan, who also executive produced "Just Mercy" (in theaters now in New York and LA, opens nationwide Friday),?based on Stevenson's 2014 memoir of the same name, thought it vital to lean into the truth. "After meeting the man and understanding his work, to tell an honest portrayal is the only morally correct thing to do, " Jordan says. Here's how that?goes down in "Just Mercy. " Our 'Just Mercy' review: Performances by Michael B. Jordan, Jamie?Foxx elevate?predictable?legal drama' Walter McMillian was nearly put to death for a crime he did not commit One of young lawyer Stevenson's first?and most incendiary?cases after founding the non-profit Equal Justice Initiative was McMillian, who had been sentenced to die in 1988?for the murder of an 18-year-old white woman on dubious?evidence. After a day-and-a-half trial, the jury ignored multiple black witnesses who testified that McMillan?was at a fish fry at the time of the crime. As shown in the film,?McMillan was ordered held on?death row even before his trial started. "It¡Çs the only case I have ever worked on?where my client spent months on death row, before ever having been convicted, " says Stevenson. "The newspapers would refer to him as 'death row defendant Walter McMillan. '?All of that led to the conditions that would make the wrongful conviction almost inevitable. That¡Çs very accurate to what happened to Walter. " Bryan Stevenson was intimidated and threatened during the case Just as in the film, Stevenson received death threats for his?work. "You're trying to do the right thing,?trying to obtain justice and your life is being threatened, " Jordan says. Stevenson says a scene where prison guards subjected him to a strip search?took place. Likewise, he?was pulled over and held at gunpoint?without provocation by police. "I had police officers pull their weapons out, point the gun at my head, and say, 'Move and I¡Çll blow your brains out, ' " Stevenson says. "Sadly, it¡Çs a scene that¡Çs familiar to a lot of people in this country. " Eva Ansley (played by Brie Larson) plays a large role in the film's fledgling?Equal Justice Initiative, which provides legal representation to prisoners who may have been wrongly convicted of crimes. Now operations director of EJI, Ansley has been an integral part?since the organization's?beginnings. Some EJI actions depicted during?McMillian's long fight for freedom?involved other lawyers. But for the sake of storytelling, these deeds?were incorporated through Larson's Ansley. "When we had to figure out how to represent the other work, it was easy to decide that it should be represented through Eva¡Çs commitment and the work she has done, " Stevenson says. A pivotal '60 Minutes' expose really did turn?the tide for McMillian McMillian's case eventually drew?national attention and was the subject of a 1992 "60 Minutes" expose that showed how flimsy the case was against the convicted man awaiting death by electrocution. "Perception is everything.?To be able to put the facts out there for the world to see brought the pressure of society and helped wrongs get righted, " Jordan says. "That '60 Minutes' piece helped Walter McMillian?get off death row. " In 1993, Alabama's Court of Criminal Appeals heard his case again. After turning down four previous appeals,?the court ruled?that McMillian?had been wrongfully convicted. McMillian was freed after six years on death row and remained close with Stevenson until his death?in 2013. While the timeline of the case was condensed for story reasons,?Stevenson says he was relieved and impressed with the filmmakers'?efforts?for?accuracy. "It was remarkable, " says Stevenson, who can laugh about one aspect of Jordan's realistic portrayal. "I told Michael the one area where he?didn't?have to be authentic was my body. He didn't have to lose the "Black Panther"/"Creed" body. He could keep all of those abs to play me. I wanted him to go on a warrior diet. ".

Jordan, Jamie Foxx, Rob Morgan, Tim Blake Nelson, Rafe Spall, and Brie Larson. It tells the true story of Walter McMillian, who, with the help of young defense attorney Bryan Stevenson, appeals his murder conviction. The film is based on the memoir of the same name, written by Stevenson. [5] Just Mercy had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2019, and was theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 25, 2019. The film received positive reviews from critics, and Foxx received a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards. Plot [ edit] In 1989, idealistic young Harvard law graduate Bryan Stevenson travels to Alabama hoping to help fight for poor people who cannot afford proper legal representation. He meets with Eva Ansley and founds the Equal Justice Initiative, then travels to a prison to meet its death row inmates. He meets Walter "Johnny D. " McMillian, an African-American man who was convicted of the 1986 murder of Ronda Morrison, a white woman. Stevenson looks over the evidence in the case and discovers it hinges entirely on the testimony of convicted felon Ralph Myers, who provided highly self-contradictory testimony in exchange for a lighter sentence in his own pending trial. Stevenson's first move is to ask prosecutor Tommy Chapman for aid; Chapman dismisses him without even looking at Stevenson's notes. Stevenson then asks McMillian family friend Darnell Houston to testify that he was with a witness who corroborated Myers' testimony the day of the murder, which would cause the prosecution's case to fall apart. When Stevenson submits Houston's testimony, police arrest him for perjury. While Stevenson is able to get the perjury charges dismissed, Houston is intimidated into refusing to testify in court. Stevenson then approaches Myers himself, who eventually admits that his testimony was coerced after police played to his fear of being burned and threatened to have him executed by electric chair. Stevenson appeals to the local court to grant McMillan a retrial. and successfully convinces Myers to recant his testimony on the stand, but the judge nevertheless refuses to grant a retrial. Distraught, Stevenson vents his frustrations about the case to Ansley. He appears on 60 Minutes to rally public support in favor of McMillan, then appeals to the Supreme Court of Alabama. The Supreme Court overturns the circuit court's decision, and grants McMillan his retrial. Stevenson then motions to have the charges dismissed entirely. He confronts Chapman at his home and tries to convince him to join him in his motion; Chapman angrily ejects him from his property. The day of the motion comes, and Stevenson appeals to the judge. Chapman agrees to join him in his motion, the case is dismissed, and McMillan is finally reunited with his family. An epilogue notes that Stevenson and Ansley continue to fight for justice to the present day. Until his death in 2013, McMillan remained friends with Stevenson. A follow-up investigation into Morrison's death confirmed McMillan's innocence and posited that a white man was likely responsible; the case has never been solved. There is never any real dramatic music or quicker paced scenes... everything is pretty monotone, with bland scenery and really boring wardrobe. Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2020 Format: Prime Video ¡ÈJust Mercy¡É Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, 136 Minutes, Rated PG-13, Released December 25, 2019: Based on an actual case and adapted from attorney Bryan Stevenson¡Çs memoir ¡ÈJust Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, ¡É the new motion picture ¡ÈJust Mercy¡É is the story of Walter McMillian, an independent tree cutter and pulpwood worker arrested and imprisoned in 1987 for a murder he did not commit. All evidence today points to the conclusion that McMillian was unjustly imprisoned mostly because of his race--he was a black man in a predominantly white community. In November 1986, eighteen-year-old Ronda Morrison, a Caucasian dry cleaning clerk in Monroeville, Alabama, was murdered at her place of employment, shot several times from behind. Walter McMillian, an African-American man with no prior felony convictions, was arrested for the crime in June 1987 despite a solid alibi and a dozen or so witnesses who placed him elsewhere at the time of the crime. Instead of being placed in a holding cell at the local jail, McMillian was sent immediately to Alabama¡Çs Death Row in Holman State remained there for fifteen months, awaiting trial. McMillian was eventually charged with Morrison's murder in a two-count indictment, and awaited trial still imprisoned on Death Row, as if conviction and a death sentence were a foregone conclusion. A motion for a change of venue was denied without reason, and after a trial which lasted only a day and and half, a jury of eleven whites and one African American convicted McMillian of murder and recommended life imprisonment. The judge, a man named Robert E. Lee Key, overruled the jury¡Çs recommendation, and sentenced McMillian to death. McMillian spent the next six years on Death Row, awaiting execution. In 1988, 28-year-old attorney and Harvard Law School graduate Bryan Stevenson formed the Alabama Capital Representation Resource Center in nearby Montgomery, and took up the task of appealing McMillian¡Çs case. Stevenson charged that the state suppressed evidence and denied McMillian due process of law, and demanded a new trial. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay adapted by Andrew Lanham and the director himself, ¡ÈJust Mercy¡É turns out to be an earnest and well-balanced courtroom drama, augmented by solid performances from a talented cast led by Jamie Foxx, Michael B. Jordan, and an almost unrecognizable Brie Larson. The drama seeks to avoid scenes which might be expected in the wake of pictures from ¡ÈTo Kill a Mockingbird¡É in 1962 through the somewhat similar fact-based ¡ÈBrian Banks¡É in 2019, and eventually builds to a richly satisfying conclusion, but ultimately lacks the narrative punch that might¡Çve turned the picture into a modern classic. Playing Stevenson, rising superstar Michael B. Jordan carries the picture¡Çs heart as the young attorney taught since childhood to ¡Èalways fight for the people who need the help most. ¡É Jordan¡Çs good in the role, but is never quite able to convey the sense of simmering moral indignation and righteousness conveyed in the Academy Award-winning performance of Gregory Peck in 1962¡Çs ¡ÈTo Kill a Mockingbird. ¡É Instead, Jordan maintains a sense of detachment and distance, even as his own civil rights are being violated by the bigoted lawmen of 1980s Alabama. In a sort of extended cameo appearance disguised in a curly brown mop of hair as a legal assistant to Jordan and manager of his Alabama Capital Representation Resource Center, Brie Larson seemingly seeks to remind viewers that prior to her career as a Marvel Comics superstar Captain Marvel she was an Academy Award-winning actress in such hard-hitting dramatic fare as 2015¡Çs ¡ÈRoom¡É and the 2017 adaptation of Jeannette Walls¡Ç memoir ¡ÈThe Glass Castle. ¡É Like Jordan, Larson¡Çs performance is it¡Çs ultimately tough to get past the knowledge that it is a performance. The best performance in ¡ÈJust Mercy¡É is contributed by Jamie Foxx as the unjustly imprisoned Walter McMillian. Never relying on a sympathetic characterization or attempting to simulate pathos, Foxx plays McMillian as a man hardened by the legal system, physically beaten but not broken, no longer allowing himself the luxury of any dream other than to maintain his dignity and die with courage. Only after months of legal interactions with Jordan¡Çs idealistic Stevenson do Foxx¡Ç eyes betray an unfamiliar emotion: Hope. If Michael B. Jordan provides the heart of ¡ÈJust Mercy, ¡É the Academy Award-winning Jamie Foxx supplies its soul. ¡ÈJust Mercy¡É is receiving excellent reviews from the critics, including an approval rating of 82% from Rotten Tomatoes and 68% from Metacritic. Audiences polled by CinemaScore assign a rare grade of A-plus to the picture. Released on Christmas Day in a limited pattern to only four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, the picture was expanded on January 10 into 2375 theaters across the United States and earned some $2. 66 million at the box office, capturing fourth place in the Box Office Mojo Top Ten behind ¡È1917¡É in first, ¡ÈStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker¡É in second, and ¡ÈJumanji: The Next Level¡É in fourth. Monroeville, Alabama, where ¡ÈJust Mercy¡É is set--and where the actual events described in the picture took place--was the childhood home of authors Truman Capote and Harper Lee, and the inspiration for fictional Maycomb, Alabama in Lee¡Çs 1960 novel ¡ÈTo Kill a Mockingbird. ¡É The connection to Lee¡Çs novel and its film adaptation are referenced a number of times throughout ¡ÈJust Mercy, ¡É and provide a more heartbreaking coda to Lee¡Çs iconic American drama than her own ¡ÈGo Set a Watchman¡É did when published in 2015. ¡ÈJust Mercy¡É is rated PG-13 for thematic content and language, including some racial epithets. Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2020 Format: Prime Video Just Mercy is a very important film dealing with due process, equal justice, race and class. It is based upon a true story that makes the message more powerful. It teaches an important lesson. It will have you shed a tear. That being said it is not without flaws. First the good. Just Mercy focuses upon a young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) who is fresh out of Harvard Law School and decides to take up cases of people on death row who lack representation in Alabama. His main client becomes Walter McMillan aka Johnny D (Jamie Foxx) who was convicted of murder and given the death sentence based upon a flawed case. The movie deals with the institutional racism of the criminal justice system. As Stevenson investigates McMillan¡Çs case he comes up against police who considered him a criminal before they arrested him, public defenders who never argued his case, courts who already decided Johnny was guilty before the trial, and an appellate court that maintains this system of injustice. As Stevenson eloquently argues several times before a judge, America should be judge not by how it treats those at the top or the majority but those who are poor and minorities. That will be the true test of whether America has justice. This is an important message that needs to be emphasized again and again because most people take the system for granted and believe that it works when it rarely does for people like McMillan. Here¡Çs the problems with the film. First, maybe because it¡Çs just the nature of these types of procedural films where the lawyers have to investigate, go through court records, interview people, etc., but the pacing is very, VERY slow for the first half of the movie. Clocking in at just over two hours long that means a lot. The second issue is that the movie is very conventional meaning you know where everything is going beforehand. This is still a great movie and it really needs to be seen by a wide audience.
