Edit Storyline Very much like the other two Bolshoi versions choreographed by Grigorovich. However, this is the only one of the three versions shot on widescreen and HD, so the colors are far more vivid and the picture practically jumps out at you, despite the fact that it's not in 3-D. The same sets (or exact duplicates of them) are used, but they don't look as shabby as in the earlier Bolshoi versions. The costumes are only very slightly different. Two minor changes have been made to the choreography. In the second act, the Nutcracker Prince and the Mouse King (who does not die onscreen in this production) do not descend through a trap door in the floor. Instead, the Nutcracker Prince chases the Mouse King offstage and returns a few minutes later triumphantly holding the King's crown. The end is also slightly different. As in the usual Bolshoi version, in the dream, Marie marries her Nutcracker Prince, but then abruptly wakes up. However, in this revised production, rather than waking up alone. This article is about the ballet and the music by Tchaikovsky. For other uses, see Nutcracker (disambiguation. Ballets by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Swan Lake (1876) Sleeping Beauty (1889) The Nutcracker (1892) List of all compositions v t e The Nutcracker ( Russian: [a] tr. Shchelkunchik listen ? ( help info) is an 1892 two-act ballet. fairy ballet. Russian: - , balet-feyeriya) originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Op. 71. The libretto is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann 's story " The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Although the original production was not a success, the 20-minute suite that Tchaikovsky extracted from the ballet was. However, the complete Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960s and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in North America. [1] Major American ballet companies generate around 40% of their annual ticket revenues from performances of The Nutcracker. [2] 3] The ballet's score has been used in several film adaptations of Hoffmann's story. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Among other things, the score is noted for its use of the celesta, an instrument that the composer had already employed in his much lesser known symphonic ballad The Voyevoda. Composition [ edit] After the success of The Sleeping Beauty in 1890, Ivan Vsevolozhsky, the director of the Imperial Theatres, commissioned Tchaikovsky to compose a double-bill program featuring both an opera and a ballet. The opera would be Iolanta. For the ballet, Tchaikovsky would again join forces with Marius Petipa, with whom he had collaborated on The Sleeping Beauty. The material Petipa chose was an adaptation of E. Hoffmann 's story " The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. by Alexandre Dumas called "The Story of a Nutcracker. 4] The plot of Hoffmann's story (and Dumas' adaptation) was greatly simplified for the two-act ballet. Hoffmann's tale contains a long flashback story within its main plot titled "The Tale of the Hard Nut" which explains how the Prince was turned into the Nutcracker. This had to be excised for the ballet. [5] Petipa gave Tchaikovsky extremely detailed instructions for the composition of each number, down to the tempo and number of bars. [4] The completion of the work was interrupted for a short time when Tchaikovsky visited the United States for twenty-five days to conduct concerts for the opening of Carnegie Hall. [6] Tchaikovsky composed parts of The Nutcracker in Rouen, France. [7] History [ edit] Saint Petersburg premiere [ edit] Left to right) Lydia Rubtsova as Marianna, Stanislava Belinskaya as Clara and Vassily Stukolkin as Fritz, in the original production of The Nutcracker (Imperial Mariinsky Theatre, Saint Petersburg, 1892) The original production of The Nutcracker, 1892 The first performance of the ballet was held as a double premiere together with Tchaikovsky's last opera, Iolanta, on 18 December?[ O. S. 6 December]?1892, at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Although the libretto was by Marius Petipa, who exactly choreographed the first production has been debated. Petipa began work on the choreography in August 1892; however, illness removed him from its completion and his assistant of seven years, Lev Ivanov, was brought in. Although Ivanov is often credited as the choreographer, some contemporary accounts credit Petipa. The performance was conducted by Italian composer Riccardo Drigo, with Antonietta Dell'Era as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Pavel Gerdt as Prince Coqueluche, Stanislava Belinskaya as Clara, Sergei Legat as the Nutcracker-Prince, and Timofey Stukolkin as Drosselmeyer. Unlike in many later productions, the children's roles were performed by real children ? students of the Imperial Ballet School in Saint Petersburg, with Belinskaya as Clara, and Vassily Stukolkin as Fritz ? rather than adults. The first performance of The Nutcracker was not deemed a success. [8] The reaction to the dancers themselves was ambivalent. While some critics praised Dell'Era on her pointework as the Sugar Plum Fairy (she allegedly received five curtain-calls) one critic called her "corpulent" and "podgy. 9] Olga Preobrajenskaya as the Columbine doll was panned by one critic as "completely insipid" and praised as "charming" by another. [9] Alexandre Benois described the choreography of the battle scene as confusing: One can not understand anything. Disorderly pushing about from corner to corner and running backwards and forwards ? quite amateurish. 9] The libretto was criticized as "lopsided" 10] and for not being faithful to the Hoffmann tale. Much of the criticism focused on the featuring of children so prominently in the ballet, 11] and many bemoaned the fact that the ballerina did not dance until the Grand Pas de Deux near the end of the second act (which did not occur until nearly midnight during the program. 10] Some found the transition between the mundane world of the first scene and the fantasy world of the second act too abrupt. [4] Reception was better for Tchaikovsky's score. Some critics called it "astonishingly rich in detailed inspiration" and "from beginning to end, beautiful, melodious, original, and characteristic. 12] But this also was not unanimous, as some critics found the party scene "ponderous" and the Grand Pas de Deux "insipid. 13] Subsequent productions [ edit] In 1919, choreographer Alexander Gorsky staged a production which eliminated the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier and gave their dances to Clara and the Nutcracker Prince, who were played by adults instead of children. This was the first production to do so. An abridged version of the ballet was first performed outside Russia in Budapest (Royal Opera House) in 1927, with choreography by Ede Brada. [14] In 1934, choreographer Vasili Vainonen staged a version of the work that addressed many of the criticisms of the original 1892 production by casting adult dancers in the roles of Clara and the Prince, as Gorsky had. The Vainonen version influenced several later productions. [4] The first complete performance outside Russia took place in England in 1934, 8] staged by Nicholas Sergeyev after Petipa's original choreography. Annual performances of the ballet have been staged there since 1952. [15] Another abridged version of the ballet, performed by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, was staged in New York City in 1940, 16] Alexandra Fedorova ? again, after Petipa's version. [8] The ballet's first complete United States performance was on 24 December 1944, by the San Francisco Ballet, staged by its artistic director, Willam Christensen, and starring Gisella Caccialanza as the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jocelyn Vollmar as the Snow Queen. [17] 8] After the enormous success of this production, San Francisco Ballet has presented Nutcracker every Christmas Eve and throughout the winter season, debuting new productions in 1944, 1954, 1967, and 2004. The original Christensen version continues in Salt Lake City, where Christensen relocated in 1948. It has been performed every year since 1963 by the Christensen-founded Ballet West. [18] The New York City Ballet gave its first annual performance of George Balanchine 's staging of The Nutcracker in 1954. [8] Beginning in the 1960s, the tradition of performing the complete ballet at Christmas eventually spread to the rest of the United States. Since Gorsky, Vainonen and Balanchine's productions, many other choreographers have made their own versions. Some institute the changes made by Gorsky and Vainonen while others, like Balanchine, utilize the original libretto. Some notable productions include Rudolf Nureyev 's 1963 production for the Royal Ballet, Yury Grigorovich for the Bolshoi Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov for the American Ballet Theatre, Kent Stowell for Pacific Northwest Ballet starting in 1983, and Peter Wright for the Royal Ballet and the Birmingham Royal Ballet. In recent years, revisionist productions, including those by Mark Morris, Matthew Bourne, and Mikhail Chemiakin have appeared; these depart radically from both the original 1892 libretto and Vainonen's revival, while Maurice Bejart 's version completely discards the original plot and characters. In addition to annual live stagings of the work, many productions have also been televised or released on home video. [1] Roles [ edit] The following extrapolation of the characters (in order of appearance) is drawn from an examination of the stage directions in the score. Founded in 1776, the Bolshoi is among the world's oldest ballet companies. It only achieved worldwide acclaim, however, in the early 20th century when Moscow became the capital of Soviet Russia. Along with the Mariinsky Ballet in Saint Petersburg, the Bolshoi is recognised as one of the foremost ballet companies in the world. History [ edit] The earliest origins of the Bolshoi Ballet can be found in the creation of a dance school for a Moscow orphanage in 1773. [1] In 1776, dancers from the school were employed by Prince Pyotr Vasilyevich Ouroussoff and the English theatrical entrepreneur Michael Maddox, to form part of their new theatre company. [2] Originally performing in privately owned venues, they later acquired the Petrovsky Theatre, which, as a result of fires and erratic redevelopment, would later be rebuilt as today's Bolshoi Theatre. While some guest dancers come and go from other very prestigious ballet companies?like the Mariinsky and American Ballet Theatre?many company dancers are graduates of the academy. In 1989, Michael Shannon was the first American ballet dancer to graduate from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy and join the Bolshoi Ballet company. [3] Despite staging many famous ballets, it struggled to compete with the reputation of the Imperial Russian Ballet, today's Mariinsky Ballet of St. Petersburg. It was not until the appointment of Alexander Gorsky as Ballet Master in 1900 that the company began to develop its own unique identity, with acclaimed productions of new or restaged ballets including, Don Quixote (1900) Coppélia (1901) Swan Lake (1901) La fille mal gardée (1903) Giselle (1911) Le Corsaire (1912) and La Bayadère (1917. 4] The Soviet leadership's preference for uncomplicated moral themes in the arts was demonstrated in Yuri Grigorovich 's appointment as director in 1964. Grigorovich held his position until 1995, at which point a series of directors, including Boris Akimov, Alexei Ratmansky, Yuri Burlaka and Sergei Filin, brought more modern dance performance ideas to the company. She said: “It mainly happened with the corps du [sic] ballet but also with the soloists. I repeatedly received such propositions to share the beds of oligarchs. 6] American dancer Joy Womack echoed this concern when she left the company after being told that, to secure solo roles she must either pay 10, 000 or "start a relationship with a sponsor. 7] The January 2013 a sulfuric acid attack on art director Sergei Filin once again steeped the company in scandal. Bolshoi dancer Pavel Dmitrichenko, was convicted of organizing the attack and sentenced to six years in prison. Reasons for the attack include corruption within the company. [8] In July 2017, the Bolshoi Theatre cancelled the premiere of a ballet about openly gay Soviet dancer Rudolf Nureyev. The Director General claimed it was due to the bad quality of the dancing; however, principal dancer Maria Alexandrova claimed it was the first sign of a 'new era' of censorship. [9] It was the first time a show has been pulled in such a way since the collapse of the Soviet Union, sparking rumours about the motivation behind it. [10] Notable people [ edit] Former dancers [ edit] Conductors [ edit] Arrival of soloists of the Bolshoi Ballet at the Schiphol airport, 9 June 1960 Andrei Anikhanov Yuri Fayer Algis Shuraitis Company structure [ edit] Today the Bolshoi Ballet remains one of the world's foremost ballet companies, in addition to being one of the largest, with approximately 220 dancers. The word "bolshoi" means "big" or "grand" in Russian. The company operates on a hierarchical system, similar to those used by other leading European ballet companies, with senior dancers ranked as principals, and descending in order of importance through lead soloist, first soloist, soloist and finally, corps de ballet. Due to its size, the company operates two troupes of corps de ballet. In 2000, the Bolshoi Ballet opened its first Ballet Academy outside Russia, in Joinville, Brazil. [11] 12] 13] 14] Performance style [ edit] The performance style of the Bolshoi Ballet is typically identified as being colourful and bold, combining technique and athleticism with expressiveness and dramatic intensity. This style is commonly attributed to Alexander Gorsky. Historically there has been a fierce rivalry with the St. Petersburg Heritage Ballet Company, the Mariinsky. Both have developed very different performing styles: the Bolshoi has a more colourful and bold approach, whereas the Mariinsky is associated with more pure and refined classicism. Free Download Bolshoi Ballet: The nutcracker. "Good performance, with bonus of archive film of Plisetskaya" by MHR (South-east England) This is a live recording, made in 1978, of a performance by the Bolshoi Ballet. The production was made by Yevgeny Macheret who used various earlier choreography including Petipa's and Gorsky's original. It looks like the immediate predecessor to the Bolshoi's current version by Alexei Fadeyechev. Nadezhda Pavlova as Kitri/Dulcinea is a very good and charming dancer. She has a good rapport with Gordeev (her husband in real life) who dances the role of Basilio. The soloists and supporting cast are also very good indeed. They all bring out the atmosphere of southern Spain that Petipa would have experienced as a young dancer. It is not surprising that the audience is often enthusiastic. Due to the age of the recording, however, picture and sound quality is below average by today's standard. Also, the stage is sometimes lit too dimly, obscuring the dancer's (particularly Basilio's) movements. Finally, there is an excellent bonus in the. full review.
