Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2020 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase This is what's referred to these days as autofiction--a blend of autobiography and fictional narrative. It's about a film director who's creatively dried up and has turned to drugs to get through the pain of his personal losses and many physical ailments. As in many of Almodovar's movies, there are frequent flashbacks, revealing how difficult if not impossible it is for his characters to escape the past. Unfortunately, the premise wasn't developed into a story with any traction. Conflicts and problems (such as his drug addiction) are easily resolved, as if they weren't major issues after all; characters of seeming importance suddenly disappear from the script, never to return; and there's a certain reliance on timely coincidences to move the plot forward at key points. And so, though it's clearly about the director's inner crisis, the story as such doesn't have any shape, there's no tension at all. By the end, you can see that this is mostly about Almodovar's relationship with his mother, and his falling in love with a young man when Almodovar was just a kid. But there is so much other stuff swirling around that it's all out of focus. So I have mixed reactions. There's a definite atmosphere to the movie, and of course you can feast your eyes on the art direction. But I think this is mostly for hard-core aficionados. Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2020 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase An endearing look at a legend’s life. Pedro Almodóvar directs his own life story as a melodrama with changed names in his life affirming autobiographical drama Pain and Glory (2019). Almodóvar crafts a mesmerizing dreamscape of his life in retrospective in all his most anguished moments, while humbly glanced back at his past successes. His direction is peerless and unbelievably creative. Teresa Font’s nonlinear editing works wonders here as you always know where there is a cut to a certain time period. The long take of Pedro’s actor friend’s monologue one man show is absolutely phenomenal directing. I felt like I was watching the opera illusion sequence from David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive. I think Pain and Glory has given Volver a run for its money as Almodóvar’s greatest film. From eager youth to lonely man, Pain and Glory covers it all. Pedro’s writing is heartfelt for all his dramatic moments, while hilarious in his dark humor here. I had no idea that Pedro Almodóvar was gay, let alone a heroin addict at one point. His life was tragic, but ends in happiness, so Pain and Glory does feel like Pedro Almodóvar is making peace with his past and finding solace for the future. He finds the most riveting way to connect emotions and scenes to colors like vivid reds and radiant greens. I love the way Pedro approaches directing as a way of life with fluid sequences and captivating emotions that stir your soul. Alberto Iglesias’ score adds another layer of moving warmth to Pain and Glory. Paola Torres’ perfectly costumes the cast with outfits that look exactly like Pedro Almodóvar’s iconic red suits and orange jackets. Alongside the make-up department, she transforms Antonio Banderas into the famous Spanish director in all his glory. José Luis Alcaine’s cinematography frames each shot beautifully and thoughtfully to reflect Pedro’s past as well as his present misery throughout the course of the film. The isolating shots are as striking as the comforting moments of companionship. Antonio Banderas gives the most nuanced performance of his legendary career playing Pedro Almodóvar himself! Banderas brings a warmth and charisma to Pedro’s cinematic character representation. He finds Pedro’s heart and holds it out for the audience to gaze upon all his hopes and fears, loves and losses, addictions and conditions, or pain and glory. Banderas delivers plenty of dark humor flawlessly with a smooth playfulness only he could pull off. His dramatic moments where he is trying not to cry in front of his ex-lover are astoundingly real. Penélope Cruz is captivating as Pedro’s mother Jacinta. She respectfully depicts her as a hard working, brutally honest, and overwhelmed mother who had to deal with poverty and raising her son the best she could. Meanwhile, Julietta Serrano kills it as a feisty and blunt old Jacinta. Asier Etxeandia gives both a very funny sidekick role to Banderas as an actor called Alberto Crespo as well as a riveting monologue that captures all of Pedro’s frustrations and pains in one heavenly scene. Leonardo Sbaraglia is just a touching trying not to cry during this speech as Federico Delgado embodying a stand in for Pedro’s past lover. Nora Navas is also compelling as Pedro’s assistant and manager Mercedes. Asier Flores delivers a fantastic performance as young Pedro too! César Vicente is great as the illiterate painter student of young Pedro’s named Eduardo. Lastly, Pedro got Rosalía for a cameo in the beginning as a laundress named Rosita for the keen eyed viewers. Simply put, Pain and Glory is one of 2019’s finest films with groundbreaking direction and effortless charm. The good humor and gentle retrospective on Pedro’s life, love, and career makes for a delightful watch. I could have watched another 2 hours from the mighty Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar. Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2020 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase This has to be one of my favorite Almodóvar films, and I have seen most of them so far. Banderas is FABULOUS (I had been somewhat disappointed by his performance in THE SKIN I LIVE IN), and so is Penélope Cruz. Yes, the film leaves a few unanswered questions, but that is the richness of the script: the spectator will have to think this through, if interested enough, to find that, in fact, the plot provides everything needed to understand it. The denouement is especially surprising (and answered questions I was asking myself earlier about the mother of Salvador (Banderas's role). Some may question why a few of the plot's lose ends are not tied at the end. I would say that this IS Almodóvar, after all, PLUS it is not your typical American film: definitely much more intriguing, at least for this film buff. Enthusiastically recommend! Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2020 Format: DVD Verified Purchase Pedro Almodóvar delivers the finest film of his prodigious career in this autobiographical film, Dolor y Gloria, a cinematic treasure relating the life and gifts of a genius. Though all of his films are treasures, this production’s writing, directing, acting, cinematography, musical scoring, settings, and message are the work of a master, and his confreres. Briefly, the span of this two-hour film is as follows: ‘The protagonist Salvador Molla is at the decline of his career. The man involuntarily looks back into the past, and a stream of vivid memories falls upon him. He recalls such moments from his youth as tender feelings for his mother, love and separation, the search for happiness and success. All this leads the master of cinema to important thoughts about life and art, because this is the most important thing for him. ’ Antonio Banderas is brilliant as Salvador Molla, and the roles of his mother Jacinta - both young (Penélope Cruz) and old (Julieta Serrano), his coincidental inspiration in art as a child ? Eduardo (César Vicente), his closest friend Mercedes (Nora Navas), his actor friend Alberto (Asier Etxeandia), his ex-lover Federico (Leonardo Sbaraglia) ? all offer performances of both credibility and distinction. Almodóvar’s wondrous sense of color and nuance is well captured by cinematographer José Luis Alcaine and the musical score by Alberto Iglesias. In all, this film is simply a wonder ? a magnificent achievement by one of the most important cinematic artists of our time. In Spanish with English subtitles. Very Highly Recommended on every level. Grady Harp, January 20 Top international reviews 4. 0 out of 5 stars A very introspective film Reviewed in Canada on February 6, 2020 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase With this film, one (I? ) feels that Almodovar's life force is waning. A very meditative film about pasts. Some will miss his exuberance... I did!
