She’d be the one giving Nancy Pelosi a run for her money, ” says Feather Schwartz Foster, author of The First Ladies: From Martha Washington to Mamie Eisenhower. Sadly, Nellie suffered a mild stroke just a few months into Taft’s presidency. Her speech never fully recovered, and she kept her public appearances limited for the remainder of her husband’s term. And that worked to mutual advantage on husband Jimmy’s campaign trail. “Her style showed they weren’t going to be swayed by Washington ways, ” says Catherine Allgor, professor of history at the University of California-Riverside. “They were going to be more down-home, good folks from Georgia. ” 3 of 16 Mamie Eisenhower (1953-1961) Unlike her younger counterparts, Mamie Eisenhower didn’t reach the White House until her mid-fifties, but she left an indelible impression with her bright pink outfits and her signature (and widely copied) “Mamie Bangs. ” “Before entering the White House, Mamie bought most of her clothes off the rack, ” says Foster, “but after the war she wore better clothes?even designers like Mollie Parnis. ” 4 of 16 Grace Coolidge (1923-1929) Unlike her bland hubby, Grace Coolidge crackled with personality?as if the class nerd miraculously wound up with the prom queen. Calvin knew she was an asset?he bought her glamorous, form-fitting “flapper” dresses designed with bold color schemes, and encouraged her thriving social life. And while she was never the trendsetter that Jackie was, her wardrobe faced the same level of scrutiny?blame the recession. “You can’t spend that kind of money on clothes, ” says Allgor, “and not expect people get antsy about it. ” 8 of 16 Laura Bush (2001-2009) “She looks sort of like what she is?an upper-middle-class wife of a powerful man, ” says Allgor. Twenty-four-year-old Julia Tyler had stepchildren older than her when she entered the White House after marrying 54-year-old President John Tyler. In her teens, she featured prominently in New York department store ads, earning her the nickname "the Rose of Long Island. ” She relished the high-profile role and the attention it brought?unlike most first ladies of her era?and even wore a tiara around the house. “She struck Washington society as a little overbearing because, being young, she warmed to the role of the First Lady, ” O’Brien says. 11 of 16 Frances Cleveland (1886-1889, 1893-1897) America’s youngest first lady married Grover Cleveland?the sitting bachelor president?when she was just 21. Cosmetics advertisers seized on the opportunity, claiming that Frances, with her natural peaches-and-cream complexion, used their skin products. While Frances and Grover’s age difference (27 years) would merely raise eyebrows today, their backstory would melt the servers at TMZ. The short version? Grover first met Frances as a newborn. When Frances’ father died, Cleveland became the administrator of his estate and wooed his daughter. “She was the first First Lady who entered the age of celebrity, ” says O’Brien. Good thing Internet gossip sites were still a century away. 12 of 16 Betty Ford (1974-1977) Betty Ford briefly studied dance in New York and even enjoyed a brief modeling career, and if her husband Gerald could have scored her approval ratings in the ’70s, he may have earned himself a second term. “She was someone whose athleticism underpinned a lot of the energy that she brought to her life, ” O’Brien says. And she didn’t just depend on her looks to connect with voters?she advocated for breast cancer following her mastectomy in 1974, and founded The Betty Ford Center after overcoming her battle with alcohol addiction. 13 of 16 Dolley Madison (1809-1817) Legend has it President Zachary Taylor coined the term “First Lady” at Dolley Madison’s funeral in 1849. Raven-haired, blue-eyed, with a penchant for low-cut dresses, Dolley’s legacy also included playing hostess under President James Madison and saving precious White House artifacts (like a portrait of George Washington) before the British torched Washington D. C. in the War of 1812. “She was the spunky, irreverant, attractive face of a young republic, ” says O’Brien. 14 of 16 Michelle Obama (2009-) Is there a role she isn’t trying to fill as First Lady? She’s a mother, a healthy lifestyle advocate, and a style icon with influence that approaches that of the most iconic First Ladies. “She dresses the way many women like to think they would in her position, ” Allgor says.
